On last night's ESPN basketball broadcast  the pregame talk from the Michigan locker room was shown. As each coach spoke they were deliberate in referring  to OSU as "Ohio", even former Ohio assistant  coach Bacari Alexander. Silly boys, "Ohio" beat you in the NCAA tourney in Nashville, you are playing Ohio State in Columbus.

Saw the same thing. The more I thought about it, the more it seemed deliberate--like they were intentionally emphasizing "Ohio." It was mentioned at least three times in the short broadcast. It was written once or twice on the white board in the background. Even the Ohio State team doesn't refer to itself as "Ohio." Does Michigan think they are sticking it to the Buckeyes by calling them "Ohio"? Seems odd, since the Buckeyes would prefer to be called "Ohio." Why would Michigan be willing to do anything that would "help" the Buckeyes?

On another note, I'm really beginning to enjoy listening to Dakich call college games. One of a very few sports announcers I actually enjoy listening to, be it radio or tv, baseball, basketball or football, college or pro. Great insight.

I was glad to hear him make a point about what I've been noticing since Ohio played o$u back in November. And that is Craft, while handling the ball, initiates contact with the defender and many times gets the foul called on the defender. A big reason why he shot 20 foul shots against Ohio. I think refs are slowly beginning see it differently, including once last night when Dakich went against his announcing partner and several thousand in attendance and agreed with the call.

I thought it was great when he got out on the floor during a timeout and demonstrated the point he was about to make on a video clip about how they were defending a Mich player.

Maybe they call O$U "Ohio" because they don't want to recognize the existence of "Harvard on the Hocking".  Found this about the history of the U of Mich on Wikipedia:

The university became a favored choice for bright Jewish students from New York in the 1920s and 1930s when the Ivy League schools had quotas restricting the number of Jews to be admitted. As a result, U-M gained the nickname "Harvard of the West,"....

Michigan has been doing that "Ohio" thing to A&M for awhile now just to get their goat, I'm sure the coaches knew exactly what they were doing with it last night.  And do you think the athletes want to be known as "Ohio"?  Not a chance, they are "Ohio State" and don't want to be confused with us.

They may not like it but there fans sure don't mind.  I had a few on my facebook last night going "come on OH-IO, don't lose to Michigan" and the like.  That's what pisses me off about it.  Yes the players don't like it but it reaffirms what the fans believe, which is that they are "OHIO."

The opposing team sucks!

The answer is simple.  They say "Ohio" because they don't care about Ohio State in basketball, but are itching for a rematch with us.

I'd love a rematch in the tourney this year. It would be nice to make Levert regret flipping his commitment

I ranted about this after OUr game vs tO$U - at the time saying that Craft was expertly using the new rules interpretations to his advantage. He likely will need to adjust as the season has progressed and the refs have evolved in their calling of the "contact" as foul or not

If OUr institution would push more on O$U to force them to not be able to use "Ohio" at all, that would help.

I was really impressed by Michigan state the last few times I have seen them on TV.  Much the same way we have a side to side chant they have the  "GO:" with the rejoinder  "STATE" as the answering side.

One could only wish to point to them and NC or Miss STATE as examples. A&M could be the biggest , baddest most publicised "STATE" in the union.

Thanks to Mi STATE for embracing their statedness.

I think the Michigan think with OHIO has nothing to do with us.  They simply want to get people to think State is basically just a MAC level program.  Too bad they can't show it on the field or court.

They need to grow up 'cause they know the difference and they have the same thing in their state.  Still, it's why I always liked Ohio U! with an exclamation mark or something like that after the OHIO.  That does and always would differentiate us from OSU or OHIO or whatever they want to be.  I know, most of you don't agree and are over this (just like I am, really).

Go (the real) OHIO!

Just a current outsider given his take as it seems if I obtain my MBA from Ohio U, I will keep reading the same discussions that I read on the FIU board about the University of Miami.

My take is that Ohio State nor Michigan really gives much thought of Ohio University. They are in the big leagues while Ohio University is in the minor leagues. I still do not know how Ohio University, which has been around forever has not grown higher in academic ratings nor moved higher than the MAC in athletics.

This is my take, as I give the same opinion on the FIU boards when the fans of my university thinks that the University of Miami deliberately confuses FIU and FAU, or the University of Miami is scared to play us or the media is out to get FIU.
I am straight forward that I love FIU but University of Miami does not give us a second thought as we are in the minor leagues while the university of Miami (even though they have been down for a decade) are in the big leagues when it comes to academics and athletics.

Also, FIU beat Michigan in basketball a little while ago and it is still brought up on the forum. Pretty sad, it is like the Miami Dolphin fans (which I am one) brings up the 1972 undefeated Dolphins

I know you most likely will not like my opinion and I do not want any enemies so soon lol, but it is my opinion.

Did anyone hear about how at the OSU game the pregame video showed a bunch of clips of high profile failures by Michigan, including OUr win over them in the 2012 tournament? Beilein was all butthurt about it, but they brought it on themselves with this whole bush league "Ohio" nonsense.

Schaus needs to call the Michigan AD and say "Look the Michigan Basketball team is obviously unhappy about their loss to Ohio, and they want a rematch. We're willing to agree to one, if the terms are acceptable".

Good for OSU . . . however, it's kind of an ironic turn of events when the Big Farm is using clips from the Real OHIO's whipping of Michigan to make Michigan embarrassed about calling them "Ohio" when all their fans do that all of the time, and they encourage it.  I think after years of calling themselves "Ohio" (remember Jesse Owens) now after the settlement they figure that they should be called "Ohio State" but that when their fans cheer "Ohio" they are cheering for the state, which they still think they are sole legitimate representative of.  It's a strange mentality that's hard to get ones head around, but it's something like that.

You are not making enemies, but it is clear you need to study your State of Ohio history just a little before commenting on this topic.  Did you know that Ohio State sued Ohio over the "AttackCat Logo." that incorporated the word "Ohio" in it in 2000?  Did you know that once it became clear that OSU was going to lose in court that the presidents of the two universities reached an out-of-court settlement?  Did you know that that settlement included a recognition by OSU that the school is Athens is "Ohio" and that every game between the two schools since in every sport in Columbus OSU has put "Ohio" on the scoreboard for our side and "Ohio State" for their side.  No more "Ohio U."  Did you know that if the case had gone to court we could have in all likelihood prevented OSU from ever again doing "Script Ohio" and they might have had to change the name of their stadium?  Some of us think the out-of-court settlement was a sellout.   There's a lot of water under the damn in this thing.  The only close parallel that I can think of is that both North Carolina and South Carolina like to call themselves "Carolina," but UNC seems to think they have exclusive rights to it.  But that's not really that close.  No other school in any other state with "State" in its name tries to go by the state name alone.  As you did acknowledge we are the older school and we are all about reclaiming our namesake.  The current athletic banners that say "Ohio -- My State, My Team" capture the essence of the feelings of many of us on this matter.

Go OHIO -- the real one!

Sorry but I missed where the University of Miami steals FIU's name ever.  There is no school, zero, zilch, nada, ever in the entire country (and probably world)...that literally takes the name of one school and uses it as their own in so many different ways.  There is no comp here.

And it doesn't matter if they are doing it out of ignorance and they are not giving us a second thought (I agree), or if they are doing it deliberately to get under our skin (less likely).  It doesn't change the fact that we should not be OK with and fight against anyone using our name as their own.

I agree. There is two ways to make people know the difference between Ohio and Ohio State. That is to be known as a better academic institution in regard to rankings or win. FIU and University of Miami are 8 miles away from each other and NO ONE gives a thought about FIU, most of the student population at FIU is UM fans.

There was this one year, however, that year was 2010. FIUs first bowl game/bowl win (please keep in mind in 2010 FIU was only playing football for its 8th year). That year even the media was giving FIU some love. Winning does that.

WIN and move up to another conference=recognition
Increase your rankings in regard to academics=recognition

I believe Ohio can get it done. It just needs to get done.

Connect the dots:  Donor hole...failure of football to win MAC title, recent blowouts...too many fans okay with the status quo..lack of OHIO distinction as ours alone.

At the risk of bringing on Armageddon II . . .  I would like to point out that this is an excellent point and speaks volumes about the lack of intelligence in the Athletic Department at UMich.
