Kaminski Eligibility?

The last I heard on Saturday OHIO has received no word -- one way or the other -- on its appeal of K's eligibility. Is it possible that the NCAA may actually wait until the season starts to hand down a verdict? This is almost unconscionable. But, it's the kind of behavior one comes to expect from the NCAA. It seems to me sometimes the NCAA is a disaster waiting for a place to happen.

Frankly, more troubling to me at this point is the fact that Chandler Thomas' transfer isn't 100% done.

Taking basketball out of the equation, how can any student start graduate school without documentation that they completed their undergraduate degree? Is this a case of special treatment for an athlete?

Or a case of red tape or someone not getting their job done. Just another way to look at it.

I can't speak of the transition from undergrad to grad school, but in the transition from high school to undergrad....

Students are accepted on the basis of assumption that they will graduate from high school. If a student has good grades and test scores, is not on a downward trend, and their past and their past and future coursework will fulfill school or state graduation requirements, he/she is accepted. Any wrinkle or cause for concern would prompt a school to request additional credentials or deny the student outright. A student can begin his/her freshman year based on that assumption, but they are instructed by admissions and academic advisors to request that the high school's guidance office send the university the final transcript when it is available (usually about a month after graduation). Guidance offices know the drill. A student can take the first semester of classes but will be blocked from registering for second semester until the final transcript is received.

This kind of thing happens all the time. You are usually accepted for grad school during your senior year based on your grades to that point and other factors that the school deems relevant. In my case when I applied for grad school for my master's degree at the Evil Empire, they were impressed with the fact that my post-Navy GPA was a quantum jump from my pre-Navy GPA. I didn't start in school until the fall, so I had the whole summer to get my final transcript to them. If I had started in the summer quarter, I would have been in graduate school before all of my credentials arrived. This would not have been a problem; however, I was not an athlete and didn't have to complete NCAA paperwork. I don't see the problem here as anything more than Grambling being slow with sending out a transcript.
