Free throw distraction

Interesting and funny article in the NYTimes today about fans' ability to distract opposing teams at the free throw line. Surprisingly, the newspaper's analysis of MAC fans found that the greatest positive home team differential is at, ahem, Eastern Michigan. Perhaps the lack of sound is most distracting of all?

Not that I would advocate moving them back to where they were, but I wonder if we were a bigger distraction when the band was behind the basket rather than their current location at side court.

The difficulty they present during times out to be heard probably compensates for the free throws.

It wouldn't surprise me if it made no difference at all.

I'd be interested to hear from retired players as to how it affected them through the years. I agree it probably doesn't much by the time a player gets to be an upperclassman, but maybe it does for first year players?
