At one point, Simmons and Dartis were out and Gollon handled the ball. I could even see Setty bringing it up if need be in a crisis. If there's ever a point where Simmons and Dartis are both resting, the goal simply has to be break pressure and get the ball into the offense. No need to try and beat a guy off the dribble 90 feet from the hoop. Gollon, Setty and I believe Laster broke a press last night just by passing it. Gotta love that. We currently have 11 players who are seeing the court as Saul tries to see what he has. This will likely get pared down to 8 or 9. Really tough call on who isn't going to see the court much. He's getting the token start right now, but despite showing improvement I think he loses the limited minutes he's getting as season progresses. I have no problem if by 11 man rotation you're including 2-3 guys who just get in for one 2-3 minute series...But if we're talking 11 players all playing over 10 minutes or so, I don't like it. I think it is fine to lean more to that side early on but eventually we'll need to settle on a core group. It already appears Dozier & Gollon won't be in the regular rotation this season. Taylor will see minutes if for no other reason than the hacking tendencies of Treg & Tony. Probably unfair but think I agree with Harley's minutes going down...I don't dislike him and could be very wrong. My way-too-early-could-certainly-change preference would be an 8 man core: Top (play as much as possible) - Simmons, Kaminski, Campbell Middle (mix and match usually play 20+) - Laster, Setty, Mompremier, Dartis, Block Bottom (foul trouble, injuries, small spurts) - Harley, Taylor Deep Bench - Dozier, Gollon ps - I'm not sure why I ended up discussing this on a Point Guard thread. Or how about Akron last year before Robotham got hurt. It's not like all 11 have to play the same amount. I think most people expect Simmons, Kaminski, and Campbell to play as much as possible. Dartis might emerge as well, but the order of the next 7 guys could change on any given night. It's one thing to claim you're going to watch his minutes, but when the other team puts up a big run and is pressing the heck out of us, do we have the discipline to keep him in that seat? You could see that conundrum playing out in David Blatt's head every playoff game last spring with LeBron James. Not comparing Simmons to LeBron James. There's just no reasonable facsimile to Simmons on this roster, it seems like. That means I'll be interested to see if we get him enough rest.
