One of my friends is a junkie. Goal to visit all the gyms in Indiana, including many that are defunct. His photostream covers a lot of ground from actions shots to centercircles, mascot pics and a myriad of downtowns, courthouses, Wal Marts (he's a manager at the distribution center)and for some reason, girl's hoops

Worth a look for us hoops junkies that enjoy pics and have time to cruise around his site

I can't get over how many "gyms" in Indiana are so big, that wrap all the way around the floor. I think the biggest HS gym I was ever in back in my time in HS was in Napoleon, or maybe Lima Senior. My high school's gym held about 2500 up to the rafters.

There are a lot of new schools being built in this area and most of the gyms seem to have a much smaller seating capacity than the ones they are replacing.

UpSan glad you took a look. One of the guys I thought would appreciate greg's photos.

The newer gyms in Indy are smaller as well. A reflection of how watered down with the rivalries and changing priorities since the advent of Class basketball. My friend Donnie wrote a book called "Hoosier Temples" http://www.abebooks.com/book-search/isbn/0943963370 / that chronicled the gyms in Indiana and why the arms race...whomever had the biggest gym got to host the sectional....New Castle wanted both the sectional and the regional so in 1957 they raised a million bucks to build the largest gym amongst their local rivals ...turned out to be the largest HS gym in America (still). I have seen 7-9K in there on a regular basis including the Muncie Central game Tommy's sr season when the previous year defending 3a state champ hosted the previous 4a runnner up. Both were ranked first in their class at the time. We laugh when we talk about his first game in the Convo vs NM State and the reporter asked him how it was to play in front of a larger college crowd of 4700

Took the high road with the answer http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/110907a...

Love those small school gyms. Can't beat wooden backboards running the sidelines and bleachers on one side. Reminds me of home.

Interesting list here. It shows 12/15 top capacity gyms are in Indiana.

Pretty good find. Kyle has hung around the AAu scene and has become the de facto recruiting guru for the Indy Star. Chris May is a close friend of mine that runs the Hall of Fame and is a student of the game. I want to find that gym on the state line. Nice find. I'm going to find out if Kyle has run across a pic of the gym on the stage in Portland IN. My p's would not let us sit down front when we were kids for fear of athletes running off the stage and landing on us.

I swear, Napoleon had the springiest court I've ever walked on. It felt like a moonbounce.

One of my friends started coaching down in Indy and has taken his team to Top 5 in the rankings. Never really thought about the job he is doing till I saw a post from one of my other friends who was in the gym. Coaching in the shadow of greatness...pretty easy to stay grounded and try and live up to the legacy

Better link to the site borna referenced with high school gym photos. His link has a "mailto:" prefix and brings up your email program rather than your browser. This one should bring up your browser:

Great site, thanks for posting, Borna!
