Ohio is soliciting for architectural/engineering services:

"Scope
The Convocation Center is the primary indoor athletic and convocation facility on the Ohio University Campus. Constructed in 1968, it is a circular structure with a building footprint of about 85,500 GSF. The University is planning an upgrade to the existing Audio/Visual system to include a new scoreboard/video board unit to be suspended from the existing roof structure. This project and the consultant services, will be carried out in two phases, the Planning Phase and the Implementation Phase. The Planning Phase of this project will require a complete structural evaluation of the roof system, and will provide recommendations for required structural upgrades to accommodate a range of scoreboard/video board types. An upcoming roofing upgrade project, as well as the potential for future solar panel installation on the roof must be considered in the study. In addition to examination of existing building documents, the evaluation process personnel are expected to access the structure by way of the existing catwalks to verify existing building component and loading conditions."

In my opinion it looks like we are still 2-3 years out on getting the new scoreboard that we all dream about. I thought the current tree of speakers suspended from the ceiling were recently upgraded.

I'm still the oddball that hopes the study concludes the roof can't support it and they're forced to go with 2 big screens on the ends instead (taking out the steep part of 2 sections on each end). I don't want to see the openness of the Convo suffer.

I'm indifferent, but I've thought for years that this was the more sensible approach anyway.

Just took a game in at Xavier/Cintas Center a week or so ago. The place is a beauty. Real nice hanging scoreboard. PROBABLY the way Ohio should go. Their concourses with ample refreshments and the store for gear were also cool.

I have to ask...don't most if not all basketball arenas have the hanging scoreboard? They make it easy to see and keep your attention. Don't know that I have seen many, if any, that have video boards on the ends? Just curious...any examples?

The Robins Center for Richmond a couple of years ago had them high up on the corners and they looked great. I think they used to have a big one that hung from the ceilings but they redid the arena a year or two before we played there.

An arena of a similar size to the Convo that uses corner scoreboards is the Wolstein Center. They are really far from the action and very much inferior to a hanging board. http://www.csuohio.edu/class/com/clevelandstater/Archives...

This debate comes up a couple times a year and no one on either side ever changes their minds. I do think we all agree that almost anything will be an improvement over the current scoreboard.

+1 for an accurate summary of the situation. Good journalism! I can see that you are still on the wagon. ;-)

Let me take this a different direction from the normal discussion on this topic.

If we do get the hanging scoreboard, what happens with the space the current scoreboards occupy? I've always thought it'd be very cool if you could add bleachers along both baselines that were more "permanent" than the temporary two-row risers they have thrown up as additional student seating for big games. The Convo doesn't need more seating... BUT the Convo's atmosphere COULD be enhanced with more LOWER BOWL seating. I'd prefer it be an enhanced student section, and I am sure others will argue for more paid lower bowl seats. Better yet, how about you put the 110 on the baseline next to the visitor bench? During timeouts, we BLAST trumpets into their timeout. Then the O Zone is restored along the sideline. YES PLEASE.

If that isn't the solution, what happens with that space? Do we a put in a different scoreboard? That baseline area is too valuable to leave it completely blank. Even if you put in a scoreboard up high, that area could still have a nice scoreboard featured.

I'd say put ribbon boards in the open ends of the lower bowl. With periodic scores, time to cheer indicators and advertising opportunities.

Put in a hanging scoreboard and there will be plenty of seats in the lower bowl. You'll probably have to sit higher to see it! Or have a broken neck trying to see it!

Maybe we could do something similar to what has been done at Ball State. They seem to have addressed the issue of those sitting on the lower/floor area as well as other areas around the arena.

I just want to know what we're all going to do when we capture our white whale?

Also, the movie of this saga will be epic.

I like this line of thinking, and more or less agree with everything you said. At one time, I thought having a "club area" in the section nearest the home bench would be interesting.

I still have never bought the argument that scoreboards on the back walls would be any better. Most of the examples I have seen people post are from arenas that are square or rectangle. The Convo, as hopefully everyone is aware, is round.

Now, if we got some kind of curved scorboard/videoboard to fit on the round curved wall? That would the most badass thing in the history of badassery.

I realize there are ways of getting a scoreboard on a round wall, I just think the hanging scoreboard makes the most sense. One thing to worry about there is depending on how low it hangs, if you're all the way at the top would it get in the way of seeing the floor?

Saw that when I went to a game earlier this year. Pretty smart. Those are huge and make the old scoreboard seem absolutely archaic the way they are using them. I wondered how much lighter those are than previous incarnations. The install is pretty clean. I don't think it would take away from the Roundness or interrupt the sight lines of the Convo roof. (I tried to imagine what the circle of flags would look like to cover the supporting structures)

A curved scoreboard stretching the full 360° around the top of the Convo. Kinda like those ribbons, except BIGGER.

That would one up Jerry Jones.

I heard that the building's electric connection to the grid can't accomodate the wattage of ribbon boards.

Looks like they added cameras up top. At first I thought it was to record overhead footage of the game, but looks more like security cameras. Maybe more of the enhanced game day security?

The Ohio University campus will soon be like downtown London. My wife and I were there on 7/7 (when the bombs went off in the tube), and the London police chief proudly said, after they caught the perps within a day or so, that you can't be anywhere in downtown London and not be on at least three security cameras at all times. The papers the next morning had very good security camera shots of the perps entering and/or exiting the tube (subway) stations.

That's the way of the world now in many cities. It certainly makes movies like Enemy of the State much more realistic now.
