If I was cynical I'd figure that the refs had money on the Cardinals, a tight flight schedule or a serious dinner date to make.

Seems like this sort of thing happens disproportionately in the MAC... And maybe it's just me thinking that way. That's nearing the level (but not quite) of a safety called from the 4 yard line.

I would say 'MAC refs', but a lot of these guys are B10 refs also. The guys that did MSU/UMD game last night were in the Convo not too long ago. I just don't get it. The amount of suckage by those refs at the end of that game made me think they'd also make good weathermen. Thankfully that didn't happen in a full Convo.

The conference has suspended 2 of the 3 officials for 2 games, and blackballed them from the MAC tourney

Ball State's new sponsor should be Timex watches, 'cause they give a licking and keep on ticking! ;-) Hey, isn't the arm part of the basketball?

And look for Murphy to take a hit in the wallet and to sit a few games for his post-game comments: http://www.hustlebelt.com/mac-basketball/2016/1/24/108230...

I thought I saw one of them call a safety.

I'm glad he said exactly what he did. He shouldn't get fined for pointing out how obviously bad that was.

If the MAC suspended the officials, I highly doubt he gets fined. Especially when nationally this is getting a ton of pub on how bad refs were. Murphy should get a couple of technical FTs for his team the next time they play Balls.

Between this ridiculous affair and the techs handed out in the BG-Ohio game, I have no faith in watching what I'm seeing any time a MAC game is being played. There's just no consistency across the board with officiating.

I wonder to what extent other MAC refs will take to heart the suspensions.

I think swallowing the whistle is my biggest pet peeve in every sport. I've heard refs say they don't want to decide the game and that is just an idiotic statement. By changing the way you call the game you are deciding the game just not the way it should be. Murphy is going to get fined and possibly suspended but I wonder if the refs would have received any punishment if he hadn't sounded off.

Agreed. Can't tell you how many times I have seen a kid that makes a living getting into the D and getting a foul doing the sam e thing in the last minute that he got a call 4 or 5 times earlier in the contest and the ref swallows the whistle. Because it was in the last minute they changed how they call the play. Inconsistent and wrong. From the first tip to the final buzzer...it should all be the same.

This is actually one of my pet peeves. And, I practically throw my shoe at the TV screen when I hear an announcer praise this behavior with words like, "Officials aren't going to call that at the end of the game, got let 'em play." What a stupid statement and attitude. IMHO, this kind of thinking really threatens the integrity of the game. What's a foul in the first minute should be a foul in the second minute, or you're making a mockery of the whole concept of unbiased officiating. Sorry for the soapbox, but this type of thinking set me off.

So this reminds me of actually when Tommy took multiple charges during the course of a game, I think against BSU (possibly NIU). Can't remember if it was home or away. Anyway, he was getting crushed by these guys, and continued taking the charges.. Then the ref called block (easy as pie charge call), and out loud said he's not calling any more charges for the rest of the game. And it's a ref we have in the Convo frequently, and a couple times this year (TVS).

Another interesting comment I heard was from a MAC ref that also is a NFL head referee. I cannot remember who we were playing last year, but we were down quite a bit, drawing all sorts of fouls, missing the FTs, and never evening the score. The ref, who usually stations himself by our seats, said to us "I'm going to have to quit calling them if they can't make any". I think that was more in a joking manner and not really serious, but it at least crossed his mind.

That was our road trip to APSU... and your favorite cheer "lets go Peay"

Tod Von Sossan was the ref. After the 4th charge he said he would never call one for him again. ANd he never did over the next 3 years.

My fave was in 08 when he took 5 at NIU and they asked Patton about his thoughts...he said "I think we are going to work very hard on pull up jumpers the next few days"

On the subject of Balls http://www.thestarpress.com/story/news/local/2016/01/25/b... /

You are talking about Gene Steatore (sp).....and watching the tO$U game I thought of you as I see your buddy Bo Boroski is working again after his mandatory hiatus

About 25 years ago, when the women played before the men, I was down in the tunnel behind a guy watching the women play. He kept on muttering to himself about the missed calls and the general ineptness of the referees for the women's game. After a particularly biting remark about how bad the referees were, I got his attention and asked him why he felt he knew so much about how bad the referees were. He laughed and told me, 'I am one of the men's games referees tonight." He went on to point out some of the things he saw the referees on the floor were missing or miscalling. Quite an education for about 5 minutes on refereeing from a referee. In his mind, the women's game referees were rank amateurs compared to his level.
