Winter basketball travel

CMU is always a fun trip. Have had a reschedule and delayed planes at OHIO but it reminds us how precarious getting to and fro is for this winter sport. Rhodes and Co had their own saga that made the USA Today

DC area a complete washout this weekend. Praying we don't lose power or cable. Snow plows are stuck on the beltway here. Started yesterday around 1:30pm and we had 20 inches on my deck this morning when I woke and they were still calling for an additional 16-20. They made the call early enough for teams around here to get out of town before it hit. Maryland up in East Lansing tonight although they may not be able to come home for a while. Going to wreak havoc on sports teams in this area all season. I'm sure my boys will be off school all next week. If that's the case high schools are going to miss 3 games. Going to be tough to make all of them up.

Glad you're safe and warm for now Van. I always worry about SOuth bEND in the winter as they are in the middle of the lake effect snow.

THere is gonna be some rescheduling problems in those areas hit. The MAC seems a lot nicer with it's footprint than some of those mega conferences that are plane only leagues.

Definitely makes a parent nervous with kids on busses and planes those 4 years of eligibility. ND swimmers found that out the hard way a couple years back.

We typically get the same weather that Athens gets just under a day later but this storm came up from the South. Weathermen nailed it though and gave us plenty of warning.

Remember the blizzard of 1978 when the Ohio basketball team was stranded on Rt 23 following a game at CMU. They were on a stranded bus for approx. 18 hours and another 4 days in Upper Sandusky,

Broken door on bus caused by opening the door to help other drivers, where teammates had to hold the door closed for the next 8 hours with a trade every ten minutes by those on the bus. Equipment bags on bus were swept out of bus created by some type of vacuum, but those bags did lead to their recovery on highway.

I agree - there was plenty of warning, which is why I wondered how the Dukes bus, and others like that, could end up in that situation?

I think they made the mistake that a lot of people make. Assume that if the vehicle you are traveling in can handle the conditions that you'll be fine. The problem is the 5% of people that can't handle the conditions can completely shut down a road. We had 1" of snow on the Wednesday before this big one and it created a complete cluster@#&* because a handful of cars couldn't move. It took someone in my office 9 hours to get home. George Mason moved the game up for them but it clearly wasn't enough. They are lucky they didn't get stuck down here. We got 32" and snow plows were getting stuck. A snow plow tried to plow our street last night and made it about 5 feet and then punted. They might still be down here if they hadn't gotten as far north as they did.

I don't think it was a case of the bus not handling the weather....they were stuck on the hi way in a huge line of traffic that was stopped. Nothing moving was the case more than the driving conditions....if you ain't moving you're dyin....

I remember driving home from kent state years ago, larry hunter era and dealing with some bad weather ..

Panda, I seem to recall that 1978 road trip! We should meet at the K of C hall sometime for a reunion. I think today, 1/16, is the 38th anniversary. I wonder if our head athletic trainer, what's his name, is still around?

Glad the weather people nailed it in the D.C. area.

That wasn't the case in Northern New Jersey.

Friday night they were predicting 6"-10" of snow.

When I got up around 5:30 on Saturday morning they were at 8"-12".

The snow accumulation predictions kept going up all day.

By the time the storm was over we had 27" on the ground,plus drifts.

After the storm the weather people were all trying to explain why they were so far off.

One weather service said the odds of the storm intensifying like it did were the same as walking across a room with a piece of thread and threading a needle on the first try.

At least we were able to handle the storm,not like DC.
