The sad part is I'm afraid that half of the side that you see on TV will be empty. Much depends on tonight - a win and we may have a good crowd another blowout and not so much.

I'm a season ticket holder and haven't missed a home game in years. I believe part of the attendance problem this year, however, is the fact that many of our home games this year have been/will be on Tuesday nights, coinciding with high school boys' games in the area. I can't help but think that has a huge impact on the attendance of the alumni and other community folks.
Now we have a Friday night "ESPN game" which again coincides with high school basketball games and doesn't start until 9:00 pm. Not only are we missing out on some local OU alumni attending the game but those high school students who would come to the Convo to see the game as well. They can't be two places at once and I don't think we can blame them for opting to support their local high school.
I guess that is why it is even more important that the Ozone show up in full force for the remaining home games. The Ozone has shown us in the past what an impactful force they can be. Let's see that again!

Winning a road game leading to a home game might help. Lets face it... our fans don't create excitement. The team has to do it first.

I didn't realize Tuesday's are also HS Basketball nights. How many Tuesday games are we talking about?

I actually think we have a decent amount of students at the games. They just lack passion and intensity. The community turnout could be better, but the students make the difference in the game. I've been so disappointed in the OZONE the last few years.

There are a total of 6 home games on the schedule this year that have been/will be played on Tuesday night.

Tuesdays and Fridays every week in Ohio. With snowstorms and holiday tournaments you can see some Saturdays and Sundays too, but these are the general days.

I'm talking about local high school games that have or will be scheduled at the same time as an Ohio game.

As a side note, I find it interesting that the MAC has gone to Tuesdays when we used to essentially always be Wednesday/Saturday unless dictated by TV. Is this a TWC Sports/ESPN3 driven thing?

The TVC which is the local league (Athens, Alexander, Federal Hocking, Trimble, and Nelsonville-York - all schools in the county), play every Tuesday night. When you have a county of 66,000 people, this is a contributing factor to our poor attendance (butts in the seats) this year.

Thanks Alan. I'm curious if OUr folks in The Convo even know this, and if they have any influence, or if this is simply a MAC change to Tuesdays?

I hate to say it but my experience is that most D 1 colleges could care less. Sad but unfortunately true because "money" talks in this day and age.

The general scheduling convention for the OHSAA is boys on Tuesday/Friday and girls on Wednesday/Saturday (with some exceptions and off nights, of course), but as Alan mentioned, you'll have the vast majority of your TVC schools playing both of those nights, and in most cases all of them will be playing.

My understanding is that the MAC moved weeknight games from Wed to Tues because of the new ESPN deal that moves 1 Saturday game to a Friday for TV each week.

We could do what the Ivy League does and play games Friday AND Saturday. Steal your whole weekend.

Most girls games are Mondays and Thursdays..Boys are Tuesdays and Fridays..Both can play on Saturdays. Girls usually play earlier games on Saturdays with boys usually playing later in the evening.

I wonder if Friday at 9 p.m. will help or hurt student attendance. Is it early enough that there will be plenty of time for drinking or is it right in the "pregaming" area for a long night out?

Excuses for low attendance at Ohio games:

(add to this as needed)

-Too early on a Saturday
-Too late on a Friday
-The Ohio State game is on
-Competes with HS basketball
-Weather
-It's on a weeknight
-Student apathy
-Low-energy/average team
-Stale pretzels

The list applies to football and basketball games. An equal opportunity list of excuses...er reasons.

I would love to go to the game on Friday but I will be at McAfee Gymnasium watching the Athens Bulldogs. I can list about 20 people off the top of my head that will be doing the same instead of going to the OU game.
