I was having lunch last week with a guy that played at UD in the early 70's. He was saying the best player he played against was Austin Carr. He talked about his 61 against Ohio and said that Larry Hunter was "guarding" him. I found the video (below) with all of his points. According to the media guide, Larry wore #20 and I don't see (although the video is not great) a #20 around Carr. Granted, Carr was "leaking out" quite a bit. But it seems as though #14 (Ken Kowall) might be assigned to Carr. Anyway, I've never seen this video before so I thought I'd share.

While in my 30s I played in a softball league with Mr. Carr. My goodness, he was strong. He consistently pounded the ball into the far netherlands.

AC (Carr, not our own Antonio Campbell) and AD, two of my favorite basketball players all time.

As far as color commentators go, however, I can't rate AC very high.

Hey Ted, thanks for ruining my day...

I was there and have NEVER been so disappointed in my life. AC was good and definitely went off on us! Can't remember why were we in white?

+1

One of my worst sports memories also. I was not there, but watched it on our black and white TV at the Mill Street Apartments (D-12) with Alan Goldsberry and his wife.

I think Ted should put himself on a one month probation for posting this ugliness during tournament season.

As I was a student at this time I clearly remember this game and how disappointed I was that we were noncompetitive.

I also graduated in 71 and was at the game. It must have been during spring break since I lived outside of Dayton and only would have been home for that reason. That was the best performance I have ever seen in person. Just think if they would have had the 3 pointer then.

Well if Austin Carr's opinion of the 3 point line is anything close to Oscar Robertson's he wouldn't have even shot a 3 pointer. DISGRACE TO THE GAME. OLD MAN BUTT HURT.

I was at that game also. What a disappointment. We had such a great team that season, but that day was simply not our day. That is still my favorite OU team of all time (with all due respect to Gary Trent, but I was in school with those guys). Craig Love, Greg McDivitt, Doug Parker, John Canine, Kenny Kowall, Tom Corde, Dave Groff, and the semi bench-warmer Larry Hunter. Beat Northwestern, Purdue (with Rick Mount), Ohio State (with Dave Sorenson and Jim Cleamons), and Indiana (with Joby Wright) to open the season. After a couple more wins they were ranked FIFTH in the country, and finished the regular season ranked 17th. Great memories! (Except for Austin Carr.)

That looks like a tartan floor at UD Fieldhouse. Kenny is a good friend of mine and I always bust his chops about that game. We were close for a bit. The game did not look that physical overall. A nice snapshot in time.

You are bringing back lots of memories. Since I was in engineering, Craig Love was in one of my classes. I still remember the team playing at Western Michigan one night and the next morning, there was Craig in my 8 am class. I wonder how many basketball players would do that today. I believe he went on to work for Chrysler and helped develop the Viper. That was some team, not great stars, but just a bunch of guys who played together and got it done except for the Notre Dame game.

That was a tartan floor. We had one in Tipp City as well. Learned early not to dive on balls on that stuff. Great contribution Ted. Carr was a great player at a time when some really great players were coming through

I too attended this game and that team is also my favorite group of Bobcat basketballers. Reading this thread brought back memories that I hadn't thought about for years. As a freshman, I was setter for an intramural volleyball team (Irvine Hall) that featured both Greg McDivitt and Doug Parker. Also recalled that I knew Craig Love as a partner in a couple of chemistry labs.

Mostly forgotten fact (hardly asterisk worthy): Austin Carr set two tournament records during that game - most points in a single tournament game (61), and he, along with John Canine (24 points) set the record for "Most points by two opposing players" in a single tournament game (85 points). John and Austin held this record for all of 5 days when Mr. Carr went off for 52 points against Kentucky while Dan Issel managed just 44!

Added info from Notre Dame basketball webpage

http://www.und.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030705aaa.html

Austin Carr's recollection of this game:

"....I had a very rewarding career at Notre Dame. I played 74 games for the varsity team (freshmen weren't eligible in 1967-68), but two stand out.

My junior year we were playing Ohio University in the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. We had lost in the first round the year before to Miami (Ohio), a game in which I suffered a broken foot and played just a few minutes. So when we faced Ohio University, I wanted to make amends for our frustrating loss the previous year.

We didn't get off to a great start as a team, and I didn't individually from a defensive standpoint. Ohio had a player named John Canine who made his first six shots against me. Coach Dee called a timeout and asked me if I was ever going to stop him.

When Coach Dee called me out in front of the team, that got my attention. I turned it up on defense and then started hitting shots from everywhere. I was in The Zone, before anyone used that expression.

I didn't know it at the time, but Roger Valdiserri, our sports information director (and a great friend to this day), went to Johnny Dee in the closing minutes when I had 55 points to tell him I was close to Bill Bradley's NCAA Tournament record of 58 points. We were up by 30, but Coach Dee let me stay in the game to get the record.

The way teams play today, that record might stand for a while. It is a record I am proud of because it comes up every year during March Madness. But I have my coaches and teammates to thank for that record, especially Jackie Meehan, who had 17 assists in that game--and most of those passes were to me.

The other game in my career that stands out is the win over UCLA on Jan. 23, 1971, the front-end loss of UCLA's 88-game winning streak. Of course, three years later Digger Phelps had the victory at the other end of the streak...."

The tartan floor is still down there. I talked to the Arena Manager a couple of years ago and said there would be major environmental issues if they pulled that up.

I remember the Tartan floor but I don't remember it being Carolina Blue for a team with a traditional red - white color palette. Am I missing something here? Ted, you're our Dayton expert, aren't you?

Borna, I used to play weekly pickup on one of those floors, too. Helped if you didn't clean your shoes quite as well beforehand, didn't it? Otherwise, might break an ankle.

It's actually Columbia Blue. The school colors are Red and Columbia Blue. I got my MBA from there and those are the colors of the sash you wear for graduation.

They have several different uniform combos right now but one uses Columbia blue lettering on white uniforms.

My apologies to Columbia. I have several friends who matriculated there but that never occurred to me.
