What do you guys think, can Big Tone AND Jaaron get on First Team? I feel like Tone will get Player of the Year with Jaaron going Second Team. It's just a gut feeling although Jaaron most certainly deserves it. Akron will need a First Teamer. Fowler will get on. Wilder from Western may get on. The Eastern kid averaged a triple double. Hall has been solid for Kent. I hope the voters do right and put him on but we weren't world beaters.

For Coach of the Year I have to think Saul will be in contention but I think Whitmore will get it, even though he won a loaded West schedule.

And finally, Jordy gets All-Freshman which is awesome.

Sixth man? Gavin should get consideration. What he has done off the bench (and in two starts) has been nothing short of un-freshman like.

If there was a "most improved" I would think Treg would easily qualify for it.

What I'm getting at is this team was just loaded with guys with upside, with talent and with heart and I hope it shows in postseason honors! GO CATS!

As much as I would like to think Ohio should get two on the first team, I would be silly to not remember this is the MAC media we are dealing with. I wouldn't be surprised if neither Jaaron or Tony made first team. Who knows when dealing with this stuff.

I agree on Treg though. An MIP award is definitely deserved.

You mean double double for JT IV, nobody is averaging a triple double. That would rock the college basketball world.

I agree with your thoughts on awards but, sadly, don't think the MAC media is going to see it that way. I bet Tony gets first team and JS gets second team. I would love to see Treg get MIP but I don't know if he's on the conference radar in the same way he's on OUr radar. Same with Block and Dartis. There's just too much history of not getting the love down here. Awards aside, I just want these guys to continue to perform like they deserve these accolades and that will get us to Saturday I think, when we will have to step it up another notch I think to Dance. Absolutely Doable.

They have to give POY to Tony Campbell. Normally I would worry about them doing what they've done so many times before, giving it to the best player on the best team...but any Akron player would be a big stretch statistically. Isiaih Johnson would be the closest, and he averages 13 & 7. I don't see how they could give it to him when the #2 seed has a guy that averaged 18 & 10.

The 2 biggest challenges in my eyes are from weaker teams, Nathan Boothe of Toledo and James Thompson from EMU. Thompson will be frosh of the year and although dominant, I don't think dominant enough to get the rare freshman POY. He averages 15 per game, but does it on much less shooting at the conference leader in FG % and the only player to outrebound TC at 10.5. I wouldn't be overly disgusted if they did give it to Thompson. Boothe scores more than anyone at 19.4, but he has taken 120 more shots than Campbell.

Simmons should be on first team due to his assist dominance allowing, averaging 7.7 almost 2 full assists more than anyone else in the conference. Add to that a top 10 scorer and FG % and I don't see how you can keep him off. If not, he'll be on 2nd team for sure.

Dartis is an obvious all frosh selection.

Block may get some consideration as 6th man but I doubt he gets it, but I don't have a great sense of who is considered the 6th man around the league. I think it is kind of weird that this is an award.

Phillips has a great shot at Coach of the year but I think James Whitford is probably more likely given Ball State was 2-16 last year. I'd be fine with either, and Dambrot wouldn't upset me much either...too often this award ignore the solid and steady coach.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure we don't have any candidates for the defensive team this season.

I think the only viable candidate other than Tony is Boothe. Thompson statistically was very good but he faded down the stretch. Campbell outscored him and outrebounded him in conference games. Over his last 6 games Thompson averaged 10.8 pts and 6.5 rebounds. Campbell,on the other hand, was a beast over the last month of the season when we needed him most. Since the 2-4 start Campbell has averaged 20.3 pts and 11.0 reb. History says that Cambpell should win it because the MAC tends to give the player on the better team the nod if it's close. Of course, they also like to give it to Seniors.

Below is a statistical comparison of the two in Conference games.

Boothe
20.3 ppg (2nd)
9.0 rpg (4th)
.469 fg% (14th)
2.6 apg
.830 ft% (4th)
.367 3pt%
1.0 bpg (9th)
1.7 ORpg (15th)
7.3 DRpg (2nd)

Campbell
19.1 ppg (3rd)
10.4 rpg (1st)
.574 fg% (3rd)
0.7 apg
.764 ft% (15th)
.446 3pt% (6th)
1.4 bpg (3rd)
2.1 ORpg (8th)
8.3 DRpg (1st)

Would love to see Tony get it but won't have a problem if it goes to Boothe. I will have a problem if it goes to anyone else.

Yes I meant double-double for Thompson. There is no way that Boothe or Thompson gets Player of the Year over Big Tone. I just can't see it. Boothe was good but didn't lead his team to more than a .500 MAC record. I don't know if there's an MIP award or sixth man. Jorday is almost certain All-Rookie. And I agree that even better than awards is advancing. I would love to get to the finals and anything more would be icing.

One more name I'd add to the COY list is Nate Oats. He took over a rough situation after Hurley left, took Evans with him, and kicked Moss off the team. He got Massinburg late and turned in a 3rd place finish. I was impressed.

I'd be OK with any of those 4 winning.

EDIT: I posted this in another thread, but the schedule of award announcements from a cleveland.com article are below.

Monday: All-MAC, All Freshman, and All-Defensive teams
Tuesday: Freshman of the year, Defensive Player of the year, 6th man of the year
Wednesday: Player of the year, Coach of the year.

Isaiah Johnson and Raven Lee both only started a handful of games in conference games. If eligible obviously Johnson would win it IMO.

I'll live with Fowler over Simmons for 1st team, but no way would I take him on my team over Simmons. I thought missing the first 7 games of the season would hurt him, but I suppose they rate conference play much higher overall. He was the runner-up to Simmons in assists and scored more per game (thanks to hoisting many more shots).

Congrats to Tony/Jaaron & Jordy!

I'm okay with almost everything on the results except for Johnson being 1st team. He played 20 mins per game and didn't start.

Yea it played out pretty much as I figured, especially for OUr guys, but I agree I didn't think IJ was a first teamer. I predict this is the only year Jaaron will be left off the first team.

Gawd, let's hope that's not the case. As effective as he can be, he shouldn't even be first team all MAC.

Other than Johnson the biggest gripe I see is Lamonte Bearden making 3rd team over Eric Washington. Bearden only played in about half the conference games and Washington owned him in their only meeting. Bearden got that off of last year.

It's not a bad list. I agree there are a few quibbles, but nothing egregious. For POY oddsmakers out there, EA seems to tip his vote toward Boothe in his little slideshow:

fully agree that Johnson does not deserve 1st team over Simmons. This is a case of the voters feeling obligated to put one player from the top team on the 1st team.

It's pretty hard to pick. I bet a lot of guys got first-team votes. You could make a case for pretty much any of the second-team guys and yet I don't know who I'd leave out. Statistically, Johnson would be the guy to leave out, but part of his lack of numbers is simply the balance and depth Akron has. I'd say there probably even were votes of Player of the Year for guys who ended up on the second team.

Here's my problem with 1st, 2nd, 3rd teams etc:

They aren't what is in reality an actual team. This year's MAC first team probably couldn't beat the second team because they're all basically 4's and 5's besides Fowler. Each team ought to reasonably include at least two bigs and two guards, i.e. positions a normal team might put on the floor. This isn't the POY voting for best player, even if the best players this year might be dominated by bigs.

It happens every year, it's not that big of a deal, but it still bugs me.

So are special awards for men.

http://mac-sports.com/news/2016/3/8/MBB_0308162522.aspx

OK, so here's the problem. How in the world does Johnson get 6th man of the year and make first team All-MAC? That shouldn't be a thing.

And apparently Jordy wasn't even in the running for Freshman of the Year.
