Awesome atmosphere today. Great crowd, great halftime show, great game (minus that little 2nd half stretch).

If we are going to keep producing these hype videos (which I love) we HAVE to have something better to display them on. These current screens are awful. I know it's been talked about, but it needs to get done.

They cost $$$$. Let's just hope the scoreboard issue for arena and stadium is a part of campus pouring rights deal.

I agree that with the current video boards, we shouldn't bother showing videos. It's just silly.

I am trusting the folks in the department are working on it but it's just not that easy. Your talking about millions of dollars to put in a center hung video board plus a new video board at the football stadium. It will get done.

Balls did the entire sound system, vid boards and arena scoreboard along with floor paint and refinish amongst other changes in Worthen for 1.2 M http://www.ballstatedaily.com/article/2015/08/worthen-are...

I agree Galia, I'm just saying in the meantime don't bother. It's like a guy with a 27" box TV hosting a huge super bowl party. It's just embarrassing.

I will agree will you. I think it's been discussed on the board that the university's campus pouring rights are coming up and the scoreboards at the athletics venues are likely going to be tied to that deal. I am assuming it will be Pepsi that steps forward and at least help fund a large portion of the installation.

In one of those article I saw the financing breakdown on the boards. Interesting discussion of motivation for getting them

:\"Ball State will finance the boards through a mix of sponsorship and advertising revenue, a $1 ticket increase, and revenue distributed by the Mid-American Conference to the university as a member school, Howard says. No state money will be used in the project."

Not sure a center hung video board would work in the convo. As it is a "round house" the angle of rise of the seating is steeper than many other venues. In order not to block the view of some of the upper deck seats it would need to be hung higher than most you see (assuming we get a board as large as other arenas). With the seating angle rise, height and size it would mean many of us would be looking up at the board and also those really bright LED lights. And of course the cost and weight of a 4 sided video board are issues.
I would like to see score and video boards on the floor replaced/upgraded. Then take 100 or so seats out, high up against the wall behind each goal. Put in two very large video boards. Cost would be less 2 vs 4 boards on the center hung. And weight no issue as it would set on the "floor" where the seats were removed.
Also, please, replace the 'works most of the time' shot clocks.
One last thought. How many of us remember when the Convo opened? There were fluorescent lights all the way around the convo in the bottom of the ventilation ducts in the top of the convo. Not sure how much structure is in the ducts but there is electric up there - can you say "ribbon boards".

and yet the same design by the same company executed at Purdue and Notre Dame with the same roof and the same angles ....does support a board....

I am not sure why, after all the discussion and photos, this is still a mystery. The rest of the text is another good option but the myth of engineering being superior at the 2 other similar arenas is not valid IMHO

That's already announced. Probably will be done at the same time Ohio completes its MAC mandated camera system upgrade with new boards changing all the angles.

Just out of curiosity, why do some BA'ers believe a new video board is important?

If you're concluding that I don't, you're right. Oh, I think a video board is nice but not important to my thoroughly enjoying a game.

Your thinking?

I do not believe he is speaking to the roof's ability to hold a scoreboard, but rather the height of the roof relative to the slope of the seating. The Covo's roof is higher floor to roof than the other arenas mentioned. And the convo is larger in arena area, but the fact the convocation center has actual chairs for seating is the difference in seating capacity. Purdue also has a raised floor which aide in the site lines.

Mike J--I agree. The game's the thing, though replay is informative at times. It's a different generation now--video games, constant attention from helicopter parents, what can you do for me. Hopefully, they'll stay off of our lawn.

I did not get that in his assertion. Maybe he can clarify. Balls had a situation with theirs and hanging it because of the floor to roof distance being so high. By my untrained eye that distance is higher http://www.sportg.com/assets/photo-22.jpg Is your interpretation speaking to the visibility of the boards vs the slope of the seating, the height of the ceiling or something about how rapidly the seats rise to meet the roof? http://www.sportg.com/signage-in-worthen-arena-at-ball-st... / Tryin to sort your post and get the point of roof height, sight lines and arena area. Throwing out seating capacity and a slightly raised floot as I don't see the relevance pertaining to his post.

I took his post, to refer to the slope of the seats to the high roof, the Convo is higher to the apex of the roof to floor than the others, yet has a smaller diameter than Mackey, giving it a steeper rise as the seating goes. The Convo actually has 3 levels on incline as you ascend the 2nd level. Mackey does not.

As to the ability of what the roof can support and the placement of what types of boards, I personally have no opinion. When I attend games, I personally prefer watching live over checking tv screens. But that's just me.

Correct. My points are the rise of the seating and height. The weight issue was just a side thought. Next time your in the convo look at the speakers. I suspect a board could not be much lower or it would obstruct the floor view of some of the very upper seats. Go half or 2/3 the way up the steps of the upper level, imagine a video board twice the size of the ones we have now, and you will see my point. If hung that high those in the lower bowl (big $$$ seats) are going to be looking up at it and right into those very bright LED lights.
Bottom line. If we get the update funded in the future I hope they put sheets the size and height off the floor up of where it will be located. Or do a CAD animation so we can see what it will look like before it goes in.

So in a sense, Ohio University's run to the Sweet 16 is helping fund Ball State's video board... LOL

1. So you can see the damn thing.......
2. And see things like - pregame videos, pump up the crowd videos, highlight replay videos, kiss cam, dance cam, stand up & cheer cam, etc. - Stuff that tends to create excitement - create a lively atmosphere - and make MORE want to come to MORE games.
3. So you can see live game stats - Roster - or at least players on the floor as most do - Player points, fouls, etc.
4. Video and signage ads - They pay for stuff ya know.......
5. Recruits - Yes - They like to see themselves........

This is my one and only request of the athletic department. I'd certainly like to see a new, larger, HD video board at Peden too, but an upgrade in the Convo is a MUST.

I've asked Schaus about this in person before, and he said it would take $1 million to get a hanging video board in the Convo. He has said it was high on the priority list.

And I think the No. 1 reason we need it is recruiting. No, a video board doesn't make you "big time," but when you lack one, you look small time. We all aspire to be the premier basketball program in the conference, and if a recruit walks in and doesn't see a video board, he won't think it's a big-time arena.

Has anyone ever taken into account how much better the Convo would look if it had one? Right now, as much as I love the Convo, it feels cavernous with nothing in the middle. Put something in the middle and in my opinion it makes the place feel less empty.
