My wife is from St Louis and we have a bitter disagreement about the Ohio/Miami rivalry.

Her sister graduated from Fiami in the early 90s and, quite literally, has no memory of any athletic rivalry between the two schools. Granted, she doesn't recall attending any athletic events. I let her know that's a small sample size and perhaps a few non sports fans are oblivious to the big picture.

She then drops statement that she has two twenty somethings in her region that echo a similar sentiment, and they're both huuuuge sports fans.

She's seen the OZone, and Peden and ncaa obc events before NCAA sweet sixteen game. She thinks ive fabricated a rivalry. Ha!

I know a few Miami grads here in New York, and generally they're far too narcissistic to have considered the possibility of Miami even having rivals, let alone put thought into who said rival would be.

There is no rivalry.

There is only domination by O H I O.

On a side note, it's sad how many kids go to redhawk and can't remember anything about their six years there.

I would almost guess that a majority of current Fiami students aren't even aware of the rivalry.

Even if you're not a big sports fan, I found that most Ohio students knew that Miami was our rival.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

It's worth debating whether or not it IS much of a rivalry anymore. What game do you first circle on your calendar when basketball schedules are released? For me, it has been Akron for at least five years.

Miami fan support is really really bad. We rag on EMU but I think Miami is getting really close to that level and I don't see it getting better.

To have a rivalry you have to care. They just don't care. Look at their attendance numbers.

Always Miami first and then Akron. Akron has been the more important game for a few years but I still want to beat Miami more. If Akron goes through a down period like Miami has recently it wouldn't even be worth asking.

Miami students are too cool for school.

I care more about Marshall and Akron.

Look at their performance for the past five years:

Men's b-ball
2015-16: 13-20 (6-12)
2014-15: 13-19 (8-10)
2013-14: 13-18 (8-10)
2012-13: 9-22 (3-13)
2011-12: 9-21 (5-11)
Total: 57-100 (30-56)

Football:
2015: 3-9 (2-6)
2014: 2-10 (2-6)
2013: 0-12 (0-8)
2012: 4-8 (3-5)
2011: 4-8 (3-5)
Total: 13-47 (10-30)

Not much there for anybody to get excited about.

They think UC, or Dayton, or maybe X is their rival - but none of those schools think the same. Hockey School? Maybe.....

I just love to hate on 'em - for their conceited mindset above all else.

No matter how long this thread goes, it never really began; see 'So Say Us All.'

I'm curious why? I used to have the same opinion, but it's really changed. They're bad, they haven't demonstrated they care about their teams or the "rivalry" in nearly a decade, and there are other teams who have truly moved up the list, at least in hoops: Akron, UB.

Too bad the original of this isn't there for viewing.

For me it's ALWAYS FIAMI. They recruited me for baseball. My parents wanted me to go visit. I vowed not to step foot on that campus unless it was to kick their butt - dead serious.

Sure recently Kent, Akron and UB probably mean more to the standings - and bring their own amount of disdain, but it can't rival Fiami.

May the Maker strike me dead, but wait until they've won a few games with old Ohio and see if there's a rivalry. It's got to hard to imagine anyone as your rival when you absolutely (say it with me) SUCK.

My wife and both sisters went to Miami and while you would never mistake any of them for die hard sports fans, they too were at best indifferent or aloof to the rivalry. My wife usually says "I want OU to win so you won't be grumpy if they lose (she is spot on there!)."

One of their off campus bookstores, Dubois, must still recognize it as a rivalry because I have seen this shirt sold in their store:

http://www.duboisbookstore.com/miami/MerchDetail.aspx?Mer...

I think more than anything there is a rampant apathy towards athletics sans maybe hockey in Oxford. Our students could certainly improve but there is a significant difference in spirit in Ohio students.

There are two kinds of rivals, Traditional Rival and Competitive Rival. Competitive rivals come and go but Traditional rivals don't. We get up more for Akron right now because the games are more important. If Miami becomes good again the games will get more important and interest would surpass that of the Akron games currently. Consequently, a bad run of a few years by Akron and we aren't circling that game. And we aren't going to be playing Akron on the last game of the season anytime soon.

Agree with most of what's been said here. Even when I lived in Oxford in the late 90s (Wallyball in hoops and a very good football era), many of the Fiami students didn't view Ohio as a rival. Most of them believe the "Public Ivy" propaganda so fully that they consider actual Ivies their academic rivals. Rivalries demand respect on some level, and I think we afford them a lot more attention and respect than they ever will in the other direction.

This is a key part of this discussion regardless of who you call our biggest rival - competitive, or traditional.

That shirt is so classically Miami. Compare it to the block lettered MUCK FIAMI shirts.

Does it matter that we aren't Akron's main rival?

Not at all. I was just agreeing with that point of view. I know, and you know, who Akron's main rival is.

Charlie's passing also has diminished the rivalry. Note the noticeable increase in fan noise in the Convo when the Charlie says "that Ozone be jumpin." Rivalries benefit from characters and Charlie was a character.

And if you have the patience to get past the storyteller, this is a great Charlie story too:

I absolutely loved Charlie Coles. Even when we lost to them I was happy for him. What a great man.
