With a 12pt lead with 44 secs left No. Iowa turned the ball over 5 times allowing Texas A&M to tie it in regulation and win it in OT. Never saw anything like it!! Stunning

Wild game and so many late game mistakes. I'm kinda sad that no real Cinderella teams made it to the sweet 16.

My freshman team won a game where we were down 12 with 20 seconds left...pre 3 pt line.

Of course this involved multiple technicals from our opponent, a meltdown that started with a hanging on the rim call.

Tonight was worse. Uni only got the ball past the free throw line once in that stretch. It was van de velde esque.

Granted I did not see this live and I was only watching the highlights, but did UNI even have to go to the free throw line in that final 44 seconds? How you could have a comeback that big that late with no clanked freebies makes it all the more shocking.

UNI would have done a lot better just to put everybody on the other side of half court and just throw the ball up for grabs. Get the ball away from your basket.

This finish will live in infamy.

It was painful to watch.

The highs and lows tend to even out in the end I guess as UNI's last 2 victories, the MVC Championship and their victory over Texas in the Round of 64 were buzzer-beaters.

I'm putting this one all on the coaches. Their regular inbounder Bohanon went down with a knee injury earlier in the game and they were totally unprepared. Beating a trap is pretty simple: keep it out of the corners and never, ever, ever, ever, ever pass it back toward the basket underneath. They did neither of these things. They just looked like they were running the same inbounds play over and over again.

The night before during one of the other upsets I heard a quote from the underdog coach to the effect that "we never lose, we just run out of time". In UNI's case, it worked the other way apparently because I was certain enough of their win when they went up 12 to switch channels....{SIGH}

I think it was A&M cut it to ten I thought to myself......."Wow what if they pull off a crazy run like Duke did against Maryland in 2001?!" Sure enough, just when you thought you have seen it all another Miracle Minute takes place.

Even if TAM goes on to lose to Oklahoma, that game will be played on highlight reels for years to come.

Always remember what Coach Orion taught us in D3:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I967z9SJ1K0

I too am kind of bummed that there are no Cinderella teams in the Sweet 16. With all of the parity this year I thought at least one team would come out of nowhere to make a name for themselves in the Sweet 16. While there are two double digit seeds, Syracuse and Gonzaga are definitely blue blood programs. When the brackets came out I definitely did not see one of those two teams making it to the Elite 8.

This actually reminded me more for when Adam Morrison and Gonzaga completed melted away in their loss to UCLA in the tournament. The Morrison cried those sweet, sweet tears.

My Princeton knowledge base begins around 2000 with then future UK Wildcat Erik Daniels.

This made me laugh. Considering what is going on in several fanbase boards I am reading that is the standard mantra. Cal didn't win another NCAA, Holtmann lost earlier than they wanted... I understand totally this response and the logic ....it is just funny to see.

I agree about the coaching culpability. They also did not use their timeouts wisely, and had none in that last minute. A TO when that guy was pinned against the sidelines with about ten seconds on the clock could have saved their butts.

It was 1984 and we all sported Converse while we listened to our Walkmen. Not sure who it was, as it was the only year we played them. Princeton was a fb powerhouse back in the day.

Seriously these kids have been told since they were in third grade that's how to not break a press. They just melted, they will face their adversity and become better for it.

That said, Northern Iowa is now a verb. As in, "Can you believe they Northern Iowaed that game?"

Sure they've been taught that, but the coach could have done something to get their mindset right. They thought they had the game won. Run a different press breaker, remind them they have a TO to use, remind them NOT to throw it back under the basket, etc. Who knows where the kids' thoughts were at the time. It was a complete meltdown by both players and coaches, but to me it just looked like they had no direction at all.

Panic reigned - more viciously than I can ever recall seeing.

Agree that it was painful to watch the implosion.

Till their dying days, Northern Iowa players will remember acutely this loss.

Problem is that they didn't have a TO to use. Calling one would have been a technical. In retrospect a technical might have been better than what happened.

Sidebar:

I still love the NCAA tournament, but ever since 2012 it's been a somewhat painful experience to watch. Ohio got a taste of truly being on the biggest stage with those 2010 and 2012 runs. We now know what we're missing every time we don't get back.

Advancing in the NCAA tournament is kinda like a drug in that sense.

I just rewatched the sequence. They had one TO and used it when they were up 10. In retrospect, that was horrible timing. Could have saved that for when s**t really hit the fan...and boy did it. They never could have known that would happen though.
