I saw that on SportsCenter this morning, which was cool. It also had highlights of Northern Ilinois' women's 2OT win against Milwaukee in which Ally Lehman had 48 points and 21 rebounds. I was pleasantly surprised to see a pair of MAC teams on there.

That is a great idea. I wonder why the national anthem has been so politicized over the years. When you go to a concert, the movies, the theater or the symphony they don't play the national anthem. Do they play it to start a golf tournament? A track and field event?

They used to play the anthem at the movies??? o.O (seriously, I'm 29 and I do not recall a single instance of them doing this, or concerts for that matter)

The opposing team sucks!

Crazy, I said they don't play the anthem at those things. Only at baseball, football, basketball and hockey. I wonder why the show of patriotism only at those events? I'm not for it either way, just wondering how it got started.

Agreed...also like what the Cavaliers did last season during their playoff run, they eschewed the typical "national recording artist" and had the crowd sing the anthem.

Your reference of Track and Field reminded me of this great Olympic moment.

+1

I wonder what the reaction to this would be at OHIO.

Yep I ran track and officiated as a TAC official for years. Relays, big meets at both the collegiate and HS levels did the National Anthem from the 70s to the turn of the century when I stopped officiating. I remember being out at turn 4 of the Indiana State Cross Country Meet in the late 90s when all the team on the course warming up and the spectators stopped as they heard the National Anthem being played in the distance . Can't speak for Golf

I can't say why it became politicized but this conversation took place on our local Hickory Husker and John Harrell HS basketball boards when it was noticed that many local coaches took their teams in the locker room to go over the talking points of the gmae rather than stay for the anthem. This was somewhere between 2003-5.
