Why and how, you ask? I don't know the how of it. As for the why, if you do the math, we expect to have Doug Taylor returning at the 5 position, Jason Carter returning at the 4 and 5 positions, and A.J. Gareri coming in at the 4. Those three we reasonably can be sure about. But you really need 5 bigs to man those two positions. So if Ellis Dozier and Wadley Mompremier stick around, that's five, at least in number. But if either one or both of them transfer, well, you get the idea... More agile bigs to clean up around the basket seem the strategy. Its a big departure from the Hunter years where it was feed the big manz inside. I'm just declaring they have to be legitimate bigs, whether they play inside or stretch the floor. The issue isn't on offense, but on defense. Someone has to guard the post and if that person can't do it singularly, then you'll have to consistently give him help and that opens up good-look treys and slashes to the basket. It also leads to foul trouble as we're seeing now. Right now we have 15 fouls to give legitimately at the 4 and 5 positions. That's why you need five guys at those spots, particularly if you're trying to keep a rising star on the court, which is what I believe Jason Carter is. While I'm a fan of Saul's approach that everyone needs to be able to shoot, handle, pass, and score, on defense they need another big body that can be effective. That guy might be on the way, or already here, but the need on the defensive end is evident. Either that, or the approach on defense needs to evolve to fit the personnel. I'm not qualified to say how that is best done with this group. But, it sure seems to me that having the ability to offer a different look to shuffle things up, be it a zone of some sort, or some kind of trapping defense wouldn't hurt. Maybe come out of a media TO in a zone for the first few possessions? Nothing I've said has ever been malicious or hurtful. Heck, have you heard Saul on his post-game shows this year? Akron's Demetrius Treadwell was one of the few guys I've seen recently who was an impactful player as a big forward at 6-7. Too bad we can't get Gary Trent back, eh? If coach Phillips' ultimate goal is to take this program to a higher level (above MAC standards), which I believe it is, the team needs to get longer, not smaller. Yes, other than Friday night, I have listened to most post game shows. I haven't heard a lot of criticism from him other than once that I recall. Has there been more? The key to this ultimately is success. If Saul can put together a deep tournament run (in any tournament), higher caliber recruits will come. If Saul stays after such a run (like he says he will), we will actually keep those recruits. KVK was not given a choice. Get on the train or get left. He did well but it was a heroic effort. Looking for a good off season for a few guys. never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....
