St. Bonaventure made a go-ahead three with 0.4 seconds left vs VCU and fans stormed the court. The refs called a delay of game technical on the Bonnies, VCU made a FT to tie it and won in OT. http://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/02/college-basketball-st-bon...

Sorry, that's a chicken poop call in my book. I don't care if it's correct. The buzzer sounded. The only way I think it should stand is if the students refused to leave the court.

A-10 issued and updated statement yesterday saying it wasn't the fans that caused the technical, but still upheld calling it...

The only thing worse at the end of a game would be calling a delay of game in football, when a field goal attempt is kicked after a timeout had been called.

+100

Never seen it before, and never seen it since.

Both Kill and Solich said they'd never seen it in their entire football careers prior to that game.

F**k this. Did anyone actually read this. What a chicken s**t response from the A-10. Unbelievable. If I was St. Bonnie, I'd be irate. This potentially cost them a shot at the league title...they would be 7-3 in A-10 and right in the thick of it up top...instead they fall to 6-4 and have to play serious catch-up.

The garbage about picking up the ball when they thought the clock had expired is absurd! How is that any different from a fan storming the court when they thought time had expired? Both were mistakes. If you said the fans weren't out of line, how can a security guard who picked up the basketball?!?!? If you're able to clear the floor for a FT, you sure as hell can clear it to run an inbound play with :00.4 left. No way a technical should've been called. Clear the floor and allow an inbounds play.

The league just sounded like they didn't want to admit a mistake and came up with a total bulls**t excuse to protect their referees.

Unreal.

"'The administrative technical foul was assessed for multiple reasons,'the conference said 'The most significant was an individual taking the game ball from the inbounding baseline [assuming time had expired] and walking down the sideline, causing the VCU player to look for the ball, and chase the individual to secure the ball for inbound. Simultaneously, one of the game officials collided with a fan on the court, prior to the inbound toss. It was after these violations that the clock expired, and the students and fans stormed the court with :00 on the clock.'"

I really can't disagree with this decision. It's a long standing rule in most sports that the home team is responsible actions of the fans at the game. The official colliding with the fan, IMHO, is enough to warrant the T. It's called "fan interference." I've seen outs awarded in baseball for fan interference. If I was a Bonnie fan I'd be irate, but not at the officials, but at the actions of that fan and the guy who grabbed the ball prematurely.

My problem with it, is they issue a statement saying it wasn't the fans, but it was a fan colliding with a ref. That's rather contradictory...

I've also read a few accounts of people (some by other journalists) at the game that don't 100% match up with that explanation. It sounded like it was a security guard who picked the ball up so it didn't roll into the stands, tried to hand the ball to the player but the player wasn't looking, and when the clock hit 0 and the fans started rushing the court so he went to stop them. It sets an interesting precedent for anyone grabbing a ball rolling into the stands.

It all sounds to me like the situation was handled poorly all the way around, and the league is saying whatever it needs to for everyone to just move on.
