I read columns by various folks on college hoops, including Seth Davis. I don't always like him, but I like his article here, and agree with his opinion on the debate of moving to four quarters. I don't see the value in making the change to quarters, despite the fact that high schools and the NBA both play four quarters. With the talk about Bracketology coming, the NIT will be experimenting with quarters. What do fellow BA'ers think?

Don't really see the point.

It seems the main issue driving this is the parade to the free throw line at the end of each half slowing down the game. Instead of mucking up the game by going to quarters (which works against the flow), raise the number of fouls before a team gets the bonus. Make it something like 8 or 9 for the bonus and 12 for the double bonus.

How frequent is this "parade to the free throw line" though? I've watching plenty of games where a team doesn't get to the bonus until the last 3-4 minutes, much less the double bonus. I wish I could find some stats on that.

I like the four quarters setup with the women's game, but I do agree with the fouls mark. Sometimes it does seem like a foul shot parade (especially since MAC refs call everything). I miss the 1-and-1 situations instead of the current five team fouls and you shoot two free throws. I'd be interested to see how the men's game would be with the women's format.

If the number of fouls to get to the bonus is increased, I'm concerned that it will make the game more physical.

I don't see the benefits of moving to four quarters.

I agree. I really don't get this enchantment that some seen to have with making this change. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm in agreement here - it ain't broke. Also, worthy of consideration is this idea: Two halves make the college game unique from the NBA. Some of us, myself included, like the fact that the college game is noticeably different from the NBA in some ways.

Agreed. Remember the years the Big East went to 6 fouls? It became way too physical. It also made it difficult on the league in the tournament because it was hard to adjust back to 5 fouls. I don't think they had final four team in any of the three years (I think it was three years) they used it.

Everyone else now plays quarters - men and women pros, international, college women, high school. Why is that? Not sure where I stand on this.

Go completely rogue and move to three 13:33 periods. Advantage? Twice the Viking Magic halftime shows.
