Since the turn of the calendar, and even moreso when Tony went down, I don't think it can be understated the importance of Mike Laster stepping up his game. Here are some stats since 2017 started:

49-79 FGs (62%)
12-25 3pts (48%)
7.68 ppg
2.31 rpg

His consistency and efficiency has been a huge asset for this team down the stretch. I hope he is able to keep it up and carry it into his senior year. He has earned the playing time.

62% FGs? For a guard?!

As much as I hated seeing Tony go down, the past 12 games have been a blessing for next year's team. Laster, Carter, Taylor and Culver have gotten valuable PT and are really a year ahead in their development. This should make them ready to go from the start next year.

I don't think it's a matter of him stepping up his game but more of a matter of getting to play. He's always had the skills (yes, he has developed them over time) but it's very hard to play effectively when you know a mistake or two will land you back on the bench for who knows how long. That said watching him play is a real joy.

Coach Phillips says it's because he put in the time to improve last summer. I think he has improved.

I don't think you improve your shooting the way he has simply from getting more playing time. His shot was broke when he first got to Athens. Looks much cleaner now.

+1

The year's not over, but next year is starting to look more and more interesting.

IMHO, having Tommy Freeman on staff to help with shooting mechanics has to be credited.

Interesting. Makes sense. Wonder to what extent Saul relies on him to work with players on mechanics.

I hope they can fix Rodney Culver's shot this summer, it would get him more minutes on the court.

We also need a bigger guy like Carter or someone coming in who can consistently hit a 12 foot jumper. Makes me appreciate the progress KVK made through the years in perfecting that shot.

Vander Plas and Gaeri both are good with the jump shot. Carter will be too, he just has to perfect it.

I hope this as well. He's got all the atleticism, and just needs that shot to be a little better. He's got to be a bigger part of things next year if Ohio is going to go to the next level - winning the conference. We need guys who can matchup athletically, and he has that ability in the same way Laster does.
