Wow..just..wow. Weathers with 22 first place votes and Jason just 11. So being the best freshman on an awful team is more important than replacing the MAC Player of the Year and averaging 14 points and 8 rebounds per game in a league LOADED with very good big guys. Jason went up against Taylor, Maric, Big Dog, Hall...list goes on...and battled.

You make good arguments and I don't disagree with you and said similar things yesterday. Still it's hard to vote against Weathers' production.

Additionally, Weathers is pretty much the best overall player on a bad team. It makes him stand out.

I'll take Carter every day and twice on Saturday. He'll be a great player for Ohio. This award, or the lack of it for him, can only serve as motivation. I'd guess he's not even put much thought into it. He just impresses me as that kind of person.

I know. The kid is more big picture than award driven. If Tone doesn't go down he doesn't even get this chance to shine like this anyways so we need to appreciate that he hopefully will continue to do damage over the next SEVERAL games.

Both are good players but it's tough to argue with this performance:

Weathers was a consistent performer all season for Miami. He averaged 16.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.9 steals per contest in 32 games this season. He led the RedHawks in each of those categories except rebounds, where he was third. He had nine 20+ points games this year with a high of 31 points against NKU (Nov. 20). His ability to drive to the basket resulted in a massive amount of free throw attempts. Weathers finished 160-for-206 from the charity stripe. His total free throw made ranks 32nd and his total attempts rank 33rd in the nation. Weathers also ranks 49th in the country with 60 total steals.

That's all good and you can't take these stats out of the voters minds, but aren't they supposed to be voting based on conference performance only?

The league has quite a few good guards as well. And as tough as Jason's task was I think being asked to run the point as a freshman for an inexperienced team is tougher. I wouldn't have argued if Jason had received the award but I fully understand why Weathers did.

No, I don't think that is the case. I think it's up to all voters to decide what they think is important. Some may throw out the non-conference performances altogether, and most I'm sure weight league performance much heavier in their minds, but I'd guess most people look at the whole season in some way.

Even if you do look at just MAC games, Carter averaged 12.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, shot 51.8 percent. Weathers averaged 14.9 points, 4.6 assists, 1.8 steals, 1.2 blocks, 3.6 rebounds. Weathers wasn't just Miami's best player, he was just about their best everything: scorer, passer, defender, shot blocker.

If Carter would have had his opportunity sooner, he might have pulled it out, and I certainly can see him being the better player in the long run, but I understand why Weathers won this award.

Like Andrew said to me yesterday, you're using logic and reasoning. Something they don't do.

Weathers also was #3 in the country in turnovers at 4.56 per game.

Keene was 4th at 4.53

Jaaron was 11th at 3.93.

All high usage players.

Isaiah Johnson and Keith Dambrot take home the POTY and COTY awards respectively.

Frankly, I think it's criminal that Jumbo Dog is POTY. Blake Hamilton is far and away a better player than him, and it's not even close. The MAC voters should be embarrassed.

Hamilton wasn't even included in the voting.

When I look at Players of the Year certain criteria have to be met. 1. Are they the best player on their own team? 2. What did they do against top competition? 3. What is their skillset? Stats? 4. If I was starting a team, would they be in my top 2 picks?

1. I think Cheatham is the best player on Kron.
2. Not sure on this one..just know that he did well against us but wasn't otherworldly.
3. Back people down. Solid post passer out of double teams. That's it.
4. Starting a team from MAC players: 1. Blake Hamilton. 2. Jaaron Simmons. 3. Jimmy Hall. 4. Marcus Keene. 5. Thomas Wilder. 6. James Thompson. 7. Tayler Pearsons. 8. Isaiah Johnson. (and I'm not so sure I wouldn't go with Maric, Cheatham or even Rayson before him).
