keith is still coaching akron because his teams haven't had much success winning outside of the mac. if akron wins a game or two some big school might consider offering him a job. I,m pretty sure akron will get hammered by whoever they play in the ncaa tourney

And I'm sure if I'm an Akron fan (which I'm not) I'd say, "tis better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved before." They're in the hunt every year and we're taking a 5 year vacation from having another crack.

You're wrong. Akron has done pretty well outside the MAC in regular season games. Plus he could have had the Duquesne job if he had wanted it, and may have been contacted by others as well.

Maybe the guy is just happy in his own skin at Akron. In today's world where the trend that bigger is better, maybe he's completely satisfied staying in the MAC with Akron. Nothing wrong with that.

I had several folks in the coaching community bring up a comment he made at Central that seems to continue to hang over his head.

From the outside he seems to be happy and satisfied with being there. Always seems to be able to attract athletes and carry a plethora of walk ons. It is interesting to sit back and watch his success. Enthralling study for sure.

Don't think the LeBron connection hurts him at all with impressionable young ballers.

No doubt that team participating in the King James AAU events in Akron is a BIGGGG plus. Can't buy that exposure. When Akron comes calling and kids have already been on campus....that is invaluable to branding

A former college baseball player has:

- A job paying him quite a bit of money with relatively little pressure (in the grand scheme of things).
- A connection to one of the greatest basketball players ever.
- A chance to go to the tournament every single year.
- A chance to live very, very comfortably in his hometown.
- Loyalty to a program who gave him a second chance.

I mean...yeah.

The comment he made was very bad, but I'm surprised they STILL hold it against him 25 years later. He's never said anything remotely close to it since, or anything to make you think he regularly would say stuff like that, so it was clearly a one-off.

And on the flip side, he's very lucky to have the career that he had after making the comment. Imagine if Social Media was around back then when he made the comment? He'd still be coaching HS basketball and not D-1 hoops.

Very true. Most people have no idea he ever said it because it was the early 90's. Would never happen today.

I have said it was fascinating watching him. He has always been good to me and seems very nice off the court. I think if you look at his record with blacks you could not imagine him having said that in the first place. Only reporting what I continue to hear from coaching circles. And he is fortunate that Social Media was not present then. You do not need to go far to find folks who would bring it up 25 years later. Just comb our threads and you'll find folks bringing up incedents years ago that won't die or asking you to use better examples...

Yes, I'd like to know too. Sounds like it was some kind of racial slur.

Dambrot is a coach without any moral virtues. If he cannot be a man to show respect to the winning team I cannot call him a COACH. He has no class, very selfish and not a leader. If I was an athlete I would have to look long and hard to play for a man like Dambrot.

In my opinion I would fire him immediately. He showed no respect to the conference, to Kent State, to his university and certainly setting a poor example of leadership on behalf of his athletes.

I get what you are saying totally....but you have met enough athletes to know that there are many out there who do not give a flying F about that....they just want to win. Stolen computers, phone cards, drugs in the mail, beaten GFs....if those athletes do those things....do you really think they are looking for the virtue and turpitude in the coach they are playing for? The guys we call friends and hold in a place of honor are far different than those.

Is this serious or a joke? Dambrot has consistently touted Kent State and Senderoff, and did so post-game. I think they actually like each other. Fire the conference's coach of the year for a perceived post-game slight? I don't think you have a future as an AD.

I think some people on this board wants him fired because he pretty consistently beaten our team (he's 18-11 against Ohio at Akron by my count). Saying he sucks as a coach because he's lost a lot of championship games is like saying LeBron is a terrible player because he has a losing record in the NBA Finals.

The fact that he hasn't won a tournament game is hardly unusual. We had our two runs, but 2012 is already five years ago. The last MAC team not named Ohio that won an NCAA Tournament game was Chris Kaman's 2003 Central Michigan squad. Measuring a MAC coach on post-season wins is pretty foolish. By any other measure, Dambrot is an unqualified success. Winning nearly 70% of your games is hard to do.

Remember watching Colin Cowherd last year doing an analysis of how the top coaches in each respective league were wired. Don't remember exact details, but his point was that the top guys aren't necessarily "player coaches," "media friendly," and "raw-raw fun guys." I remember him singling out Saban, Harbaugh and Belichick. Top guys are tough, jerks, difficult, hard drivers, etc... Nice guys in his analysis are winning the press conferences, but aren't the guys doing the big time winning.

I don't know Dambrot, but he comes across as the Bad Boy of the MAC and while there's some shortcomings on his resume, Akron is the bully on the block. OHIO's spending half the season trying to calculate how not to be on their side of the bracket in Cleveland. I don't like Akron or Dambrot, but I respect their results on the court year-in-year-out. I'll let the fun comedy guys lead something else in my life other than my basketball team.

He's proven to be edgy and he has recruited some that wouldn't come off as choir boys. He's managed to manage it all over the years and love or hate him and the Akron program there's little doubt a MAC championship runs thru Akron over the last decade.

Akron has won the regular season the past two years by three games and has no NCAA tourney to bids to show for it. The regular season champ gets a slap on the back and basically nothing else as a reward for winning the 18 game regular season schedule. The Zips have been the top team in the conference since Dambrot arrived. However a lower seeded team like Ohio a few years ago or Kent this March can win a few games in the tourney and get to the big dance. I may be in the minority, but I think the MAC should reward the regular season champ. I wasn't a fan of the regular season champ getting an auto bid to the semi finals of the MAC tourney, but as it is now, the regular season doesn't amount to much for most one bid mid major programs. And the MAC is a one bid league. Consistency over 18 games should be rewarded. It will never happen, but moving at least the semis and finals of the league tourney to the campus of the regular season winner would at least make the winner feel that the regular season grind was worth it. If the regular season champ lost in the quarterfinals then the two seed would host.

I think it was a lapse in judgment, nothing more. He took a chance on something that he thought would help him connect with his players and it backfired. As I understand, he even asked permission before using it. He got no flack from his team, but apparently there was one person in the locker room who took issue, and the rest is history. I don't know if it was a GA, manager or the janitor.
