I love to just watch him instead of the ball at times. - He comes off his man then back on in such a crafty way. - He can do so much with a half second on defense to alter all kinds of opponents and plays that are technically not his assignment. - The amount of work he does to position while the ball is in the air doesn't even seem possible. - He must've gotten straight A's in Geometry because he judges the bounces and ricochets as good as you can expect. - He follows his shots not just to do it but does it so well, because...you guessed it, positioning. - He moves to open space to create an open look for himself. - He moves to open space to create an open drive for his teammates. - He executes screens so frequently and sneakily. - How can someone not particularly fast be like Speedy Gonzalez with his positioning? You swear you just saw him set a pick at the top of the key, you blink, and then he is under the hoop scoring. - Despite all this tremendous positioning and aggressive level of movement, he rarely gets called for blocks or other dumb fouls. His fouls are more productive and of the attempted shot block variety. Not only will Jason Carter be a joy of a player for us, but I hope he will also model a style of play that will be passed on and spread throughout the future of our program for years. Back in my coaching days, I can remember hearing that certain big time schools would rarely if ever recruit outside a major urban center. Those that did would tell us that they were grateful for the oversight of the others. I keep thinking that's probably the main reason we have Jason and he's not in the Big Ten etc. Just imagining his potential must give Coach Phillips a happy feeling on a down and out day! Looked to me like a man standing next to a boy still in high school. But Carter more than held his own against the more experienced Taylor, taking advantage of his quickness, soft hands and excellent foot work. And while the man played his final MAC game tonight, Ohio fans get three more years after this season from Carter. Shooter pulled up for jumper YET Carter still got back down low and boxed out Taylor for the rebound. Great combination of hustle, basketball IQ and physical talent. Saul needs to put together footage of what both he and Gavin Block do away from the ball and show it to the rest of the team and run it over and over and over. I was just happy they didn't call it a block. Love the view of that play that Ted posted from behind the basket. Kenny's shot goes in and nobody celebrates. They all busted their tails to get back on defense. Your observations are clearly correct here. This is one thing that drives me crazy about college basketball officiating. The tendency to call things differently in the final minutes of a game. If it's a charge in the first minute of play it's a charge in the last 10 seconds of play. If it's foul in the first minute, it's a foul in the last 30 seconds, etc. Be consistent. Improved jump shots + a little weight room work are all that could be between Carter & Culver, and big strides in their respective games. The coaches did a nice job finding Carter. It's fun to have the fun back in watching this program!
