Former Ohio assistant from 2008-10, then Gardner Webb HC from 2010-13 (took G-W to '13 CIT).

Joined Butler as AC in 2013 under Brandon Miller, who went on leave of absence (medical reasons) in October. Holtmann had been serving as interim HC, but school just announced Miller won't return, so Holtmann is the new regular head coach.

Two things:

1. I hope Brandon Miller makes a full recovery.
2. I am beyond thrilled for Chris. He deserves this and is going to succeed.

good thoughts.

Although there are still a cadre of Butler fans that think the GW coach is not quite what they need ....despite the results thus far....... I think they are in a great place and Collier hit a home run backing Miller up with Chris.

Been following Brandon and fam since pops was an asst coach at NC way before BM was out of grade school. Sorry to see him get out of the game for a second time. Things will run their course and he has a strong family support system.

Chris is a meticulous planner and an indefatigable recruiter that has historically been very at home in Indiana. I hope he gets some Big East bodies in there as this is not the Horizon anymore. I think he is the best choice even if they were to run a national search and come up with 10 names he would still be tops. Odd fanbase though. They now think they have joined the elite although they carry an inferiority complex when it comes to IU, PU, ND instate and the surrounding BIG teams. Still trying to find themselves and acclimate to the new conference with dissenting opines regarding their direction.

I hear your point on the caliber of competition relative to years past. It is still the Big East in terms of the need for big bodies to compete with big guys teams like St. Johns, Georgetown, Marquette typically have on their teams.

Scary flight for Holtmann and the Bulldogs on their way back home from LaGuardia.

Awesome for him. It's interesting to me to read the talk about him leaving for someplace bigger. I hope he doesn't, and can't see it because there aren't too many better places to be in his profession, in my opinion.

Butler has built itself into a destination job.

OUVan, I agree with you. To that point, I think in terms of jobs, college coaching has changed a ton. There are a lot more really good jobs, I think, than there were just a decade ago. We were discussing the status of Thad Matta earlier, his future status, and who might take the job if it opened up. A point I made was that jobs like Butler, Dayton, Wichita State have become very good, very well paying jobs. I can't see a guy like Archie or Greg Marshall leaving for OSU because it's no longer about the money, and their programs are currently better than OSU. Sure, the ceiling at OSU might be higher long term, but it's not like it was with Groce when he moved to the Illini where he went from $350k to 1.4 million or something. It's not a change of job for life changing money to go from Wichita State to OSU anymore. For that reason, I can't see these guys moving unless the pay scale gets bumped a lot higher. Why leave Butler, Dayton, or Wichita when you're already making mega bucks and you're in the tournament almost every year, AND you're not in the shadow of a football program?

That is funny considering th e conversation regarding Matta leaving that happened a while back. The person holding tO$U out as a higher profile, much better job still makes me chuckle. He fell flat on his face this year but folks don't care enough about hoops to even make his seat a little bit warm. At Butler hoops is king and everywhere Chris goes in Indy he is more recognized than the Mayor. First time ever I can remember IU, ND and even with a great team this year, Purdue, taking back seat to that little school up Meridian Street.

Butler moving into the BE and playing well center stage has shifted the focus....and with no Football to compete against all their funding goes into one basket. Coach is in a great spot.

Besides the move to the BE, they've done great work at Butler on facilities and recruiting. Another key, as you state borna, is the lack of football as a money drain and fan draw to compete with.
