Just a reminder that Ohio with the similar size enrollment and similar facilities can be next. However... and this is a big however... look at the athletes on the MTSU roster.

Everybody likes a funny story about lava cakes but it takes stud athletes to do what MTSU is doing. Think about it.

And when your guys get in foul trouble play some zone defense. Saul.

And save a timeout for the very very end. Saul.

Have you ever considered if the two schools have similar admissions standards for athletes?

Yeah it only took the coach 10+ years to get there. But Saul only gets a 4 or 5 Year rope? Got it.

He mistakenly thought having average to decent players would get it done. Until it became obvious that was not correct. So he changed who would get offered. And instead of re-inventing the wheel, others could learn from his earlier mediocre results and not have it take eight or ten years to get there.

A coach can learn from what works elsewhere... as well as what did not.

Really? More consecutive trips right now to the NBA playoffs than all but the Spurs and the Hawks. More than the Cavs, Golden State, Miami, Chicago...

Is that really funny? And what does it have to do with college ball?

Really, another post about athletes? Are we talking about our track and field team or our basketball team?

It's great that MTSU can win with athletic players, but we can win our way. Saul has won that way at NDSU and Wisconsin has won this way for years. Just give me good basketball players and I'm happy.

I'm not in the MTSU admissions office. I think I went one time to drop off a FASFA or some sort of paperwork and the air conditioning was on the fritz. That was all I remember about it.

The question about admission standards for basketball players would be better addressed to Kermit Davis. Try him at @MT_MBB

It's funny that while you're complaining about him not saving a TO for the end, others are complaining about him not using one during runs in the middle of a game. Apparently we have several really smart college basketball coaches on here.

I'm not going to contact MTSU about my question. MTSU is a good school and serves it's region well, they have a good athletic program, and I really like watching their basketball team. They're excellent.

But it's possible they might be more open to working with borderline academic cases than Ohio is. Heck, there are programs in the MAC that have less stringent admissions standards than Ohio.

Pretty sure the guys from Indiana that played at MTSU would not qualify at Ohio.

Pretty interesting looking at KenPom. MTSU has put together a good team this year and has really benefitted from the CUSA move and opponents.I had no idea the CUSA had fallen so far looking at the Kenpom rankings. MAC looks pretty good comparitively. His overall record is fairly consistent with this year being the anomaly but 3 of the last 5 lookin better than the previous 8 . Given the P5 dominance of at large spots they almost have to be the "darling". I am not sure how happy this fanbase would be with those results. 3 NCAA berths (not births) and early outs in conf tourney most years.

They have a nice team and the win vs Mi St last year lives in memories like our GTown and Michigone wins.

Offense Defense

2017 48 Middle Tennessee 12 CUSA 30-4 17-1

2016 119 Middle Tennessee 15 CUSA 25-10 13-5

2015 157 Middle Tennessee CUSA 19-17 9-9

2014 89 Middle Tennessee CUSA 24-9 13-3

2013 44 Middle Tennessee 11 SB 28-6 19-1

2012 49 Middle Tennessee SB 27-7 14-2

2011 190 Middle Tennessee SB 16-16 10-6

2008 165 Middle Tennessee SB 17-15 11-7

2007 202 Middle Tennessee SB 15-17 8-10

The Memphis Grizzlies need to pay attention to what the Golden Stare Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are doing.

I'm not sure how much different the current CUSA is than what the Sun Belt was in 2012 and 2013 as evidenced by the 14-2 and 19-1 mitsu finished with those years. Marshall's 19 threes (?) the other day vs a pretty good LaTech team was pretty impressive.

They really do, as their rookie coach has hit a wall and is starting to suck with all his experimental lineup shuffling. They can't buy much more time with old ancient players like Vince Carter and Tony Allen. Gasol and Conley won't be in their prime much longer either... they do need to have a new plan soon. "Grit and Grind" worked for seven years. It's just about run it's course.

And now they are stuck with the bloated contract of "damaged goods" Chandler Parsons. That's sort of a bummer.

I'm not sure why people were trying to diss their academics. Maybe the football program doesn't live up to what the basketball team does, but that is not to be held against the basketball program.

They had a pretty good day on the hardwood as well vs Pitino Jr.

Good job on graduating students. No question about that.

My question was on admissions standards and whether Ohio would be able to recruit the same players. You were saying we need to be recruiting the same type of athletes.

Might be? I read your post as that they don't have the same standards and do any of us know what OU's are?

I know there are quite a few athletes I have asked about over the years that were met with the comment...."maybe if we were Akron or BG"...with the implication that we could not get them in... Not sure if that is still true or if we have lowered requirements.

On that subject it is enlightening to see Northwestern and ND advance this year.

Without wading in to the academic debate or taking anything from MTSU, I'll hold off on being blown away until they can sustain high-level success year after year. As the fans of this board know too well, life as a mid-major means being a victim of your own success.

Forces conspired to knock us back to reality after the Sweet 16 run, and I suspect they'll do the same to MTSU. Great coach? Enjoy watching him hired away. Great potential next year? Good luck getting a game scheduled with a high major. Great team full of program-defining seniors? There are no McDonald's All-Americans waiting in the wings.

I love watching "little" schools succeed in the postseason (Kent State will be called little tonight with its total enrollment of over 40,000), but how many have sustained that postseason success while in a one-bid league? Basically none.

MTSU is more like the flavor of the month.
