Let me preface this by saying that for the most part, I have always respected the job Keith Dambrot did at Akron. He was a "love to hate" type of guy who you hated mostly because he was successful. But...

1. Would Duquesne have even finished in the middle of the pack in the MAC East?
2. If he's taking a bunch of Akron guys and recruits with him..what does that say for Duquesne that if they are at a higher level than the MAC he's bringing in MAC players?
3. Dunn-Martin can go to Duquesne. Dude was solid but in the A-10 he will get run.
4. Really Duquesne...Witness brand? Using a Cleveland brand in Pittsburgh is going to go really well.
5. Speaking of Bron..will he now leave Akron ball in the past and start wearing "Dukes" stuff or will he just distance himself from Dambrot? I need a LeBron comment on this move!
6. Antino Jackson is mad. He's got two years left. I think he dated Monique Jenkins. Let's get him to OU!
7. As good as his regular season records were, the fact remains, only 3 NCAA appearances and embarrassing losses in all.
8. He was cranky the last few years. Not gracious in defeat...picking fights with reporters like Arkley...blaming refs...not respecting his opponents...time for a change.
9. If Boals doesn't get this job something is wrong in Akron.

Discuss amongst yourselves! :)

I agree, Duquesne gave him a 400k raise to finish out his career. The A-10 is a very tough conference and using Akron recruits & transfers won't cut it. They also have a rivalry with Pitt & Robert Morris in the city which hasn't gone well in the recent past. yeah the Dukes beat Pitt this year but did little else. IF he can bring back the players that want to leave Duquesne he may have a chance. I know that Duquesne didn't offer any of the candidates that turned down the job a million a year and it was a last gasp effort to save face by offering it to Dambrot.

1. Does it matter? They hired Dambrot to get better in the future.
2. Hurley took the cream with him from Buffalo too. It's not uncommon and we should all know by now that players commit to coaches and not programs.
5. LeBron is deeply committed to UA academically through his foundation. No reason to expect that to change. I think the hoops connection was overblown anyway.
6. I'd love to get some of the better Zips too.
7. Very true, but it did not keep him from a payday. We play in a league that has notched FOUR NCAA wins in the last 15 years and three were on improbable runs by this program. Him losing in the tournament was pretty normal for the MAC, sadly.
8. Disagree with all of that.
9. Stony Brook is a better job than Akron right now, and he just got there.

Very good counterpoints. And Hurley only took Evans. Tavian DM is no Evans. And he has gotten crankier

Agree with RecovJourno here: No way in the world, unless Akron breaks the bank, that Boals leaves Stony Brook after a year. To that end, no way a guy like Groce goes there either based on the dollars previously paid. One thing we haven't talked about that would alter this is the buyout number KD may, or may not have had.

EDIT: I read this afternoon the buyout may have only been $100,000. Ouch.

In honor of 100% Cat, I changed my subject line. Well played man!

Like with Josh Williams, I think he'd be worth checking into if he's available.

What I'll always remember about Keith Dambrot is 0 NCAA Tourney wins in 13 seasons at Akron. I believe OHIO has 3 NCAA Tourney wins during this stretch.

Fact is...LeBron James saved his career. If social media were around when he made his racist comments at CMU, he never would have coached again at the collegiate level.

The MAC sadly and unfairly being a one-team entry to the Big Dance is a hard pill to swallow year and year after year after year, PARTICULARLY when your team ALWAYS has more than 20 wins and USUALLY plays in the MAC title game.

Yup and LeBron's buddies Joyce and Travis helped him jumpstart the Akron program. This is why I wouldn't be surprised if they hired Joyce (the father) away from St. V as the new coach. Whether or not he's ready is irrelvant. Keep that LeBron pipeline pumping.

But I put this blame on Dambrot too. I know MAC schools won't get a home and home with power 5 schools, but then you have to schedule at least 3 big boy non-conference aways games to get the committee's attention for an at large bid. Fact is, Dambrot didn't do this at all in his 13 years at Akron. And yes...I realize they did play Gonzaga this year, but there wasn't enough of it that when it came to his schedule making.

What LeBron pipeline? Joyce and Travis was over a decade ago. Is it same pipeline that saw Jalen Hudson go to Virginia Tech or Jayvon Graves go to Buffalo?

What does LeBron actually do for Akron basketball besides send out a couple congratulatory tweets a year?

Talking more about the notoriety he brings the school simply because he's from Akron and was coached by Dambrot. Pretty sure he's the reason they got the Nike deal they got. Akron had a damn LeBron bobblehead night for God's sake.

I don't give Dambrot or Akron a hard time about any Lebron relations/influence because I wish we had the same thing at Ohio. An NBA all-time great willing to donate his time and $ to Ohio. Would be really nice.

Whoa whoa whoa, it's MANDATORY that fun be made of Akron for giving away a bobblehead of Lebron in a Zips uniform.

Akron's overall strength of schedule was 117th this season.

Akron's out of conference strength of schedule was 124th.

That tell's me Akron was part of the problem in our one-bid conference, and not part of the solution.

I won't miss the way Dambrot consistently degraded the surroundings to explain his shortcomings. That schtick won't play in Pittsburgh the way it will in woe-is-me Northeast Ohio.

I don't know much about Akron's Nike deal. Is it any better than our new Adidas deal?

Also, the bobblehead was a joke. And I don't recall it getting much publicity except for people making fun of how desperate it was.

It won't be easy at Duquesne. Tough conference. School is sequestered in downtown and not within walking distance of where the kids want to be. Not a great campus by any stretch of the imagination. It's also tough academically. They play second fiddle to Pitt. Pitt gets front page stories and evening news film clips and NBA style box scores. Duquesne gets a high school box and mostly gets d@#$. Attendance is just a little better than Eastern Michigan.

I don't know the details of the deal, but being only one of 4 schools to use LeBron Nike gear is a pretty sweet deal.

Spot on^^^^^. Let's call it what this is. Dambrot is 58 years old and signed a 7 year contract. He's calling it quits, if he lasts that long, at age 65 and retiring. Good for him to get a nice payday as he sails off into the sunset.

KD is 59 and I think it's his final payday before retirement. If he doesn't resurrect the program he walks away secure. Good for him.

Same thing could have been written about Xavier in the early 80's(except the conference.) It took one coach(Bob Staak) to right the ship and a strong successor(Gillen) to build it into a sustaining power. With one big time recruit(ala Byron Larkin at X) surrounded by a sound supporting cast...Dambrot could be off and running.

is it really just NCAA tournament money that allows Duquesne (Duquesne!) to pay a coach a freaking million/year? They have a high school gym they barely draw flies to. is it the lack of football? Are they supported by student fees? Do they have deep pockets endowing the inflated coach salaries?

I'll add one definite thing, besides lack of football: The A-10 TV deal. I can watch the Dayton Flyers on NBCSN, CBSSN, and locally almost every conference game of the year. On real TV. Nationally.
