Just read this story of the Lawson brothers leaving Memphis because Tubby demoted their father, who had been hired by Josh Pastner as an assistant coach when they were recruited. My question is why is this allowed? I would pose the same question about recruits AAU or high school coaches as well.

This is a scandal. Where have all the investigative reporters gone? There's way too much of this stuff going on in college athletics, yet it seems it's very seldom investigated in any depth. One could also ask where the NCAA is, but they've been out to lunch for a long time.

With the current plethora of "media" outlets, it's entirely possible that this issue has been investigated.

There is a rule proposed for football to stop this kind of stuff. This article says there already is a rule against it in basketball but I don't know how long it's been in place: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2017/04/11/co... /

There is a rule, but there are ways around it. Foggy memory, but the high school coach/father/relative is allowed to be hired by a program three years prior or three years after the student-athlete arrives on campus. Could be four years I'm not 100%. I'll have to dig out my NCAA rules manual to look into it.

The number 1 recruit (Michael Porter Jr.) in 2017 followed his father to Missouri.

This is the one that needs to be looked at I think. Porter, Jr. was originally slated to go to Washington, where Porter, Sr. was an assistant coach for a year. Papa was on the Mizzou women's staff for 6 years prior to that and his daughter now plays on the women's team.

Lorenzo Romar fired by UW, Porter, Sr. goes back to Columbia under Cuonzo Martin and the son follows. Sounds to me like this guy is just being shopped to the highest bidder as long as his kids get to follow him.

"It’s not immediately clear what Porter’s decision means for his son, Michael Porter Jr."

Bullllllshhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

Isn't that how Danny Manning ended up at Kansas?

This is standard business in sports. So used to hearing about this. Hence why I've said programs make these deals all over the place and should be getting whacked for it. But what do I know, not like the NCAA has made a decision on UNC here......

Here is a partial answer, Alabama is criminal. They may have u to 97 have coaches on their payroll for football.
Jim Harbaugh recently drew the ire of many in sports media for attempting to hire the coach and father of a major recruit in the current cycle, while it is widely believed the University of Alabama may have up to 97 coaches and staffers.

The new rules would create guidelines similar to those in college basketball, where universities cannot hire high school coaches as a non-coach. Penalties include permanent ineligibility for the player and suspensions of head coaches or assistant coaches. The changes would take place effective immediately, retroactive to Jan. 18.

Other changes passed include:

Coaches now only have 10 days to conduct camps in June, rather than two 10-15 day periods in June and/or July. The camps also have to be conducted on-campus or on associated grounds (such as practice facilities.)
Annual scholarships are now reduced to 25 per year for those offered in the fall. This is meant to try and kill the “greyshirting” practice, where coaches over-sign in a particular class and add those overflow players to the next recruiting class by delaying their signing.
The summer dead period for recruiting has been extended to include the entire month of August and a period from late June to July.
Two-a-day practices have been eliminated due to safety concerns. Instead, the universities will allow an extra week of preseason practices and be given free reign over how to distribute their 29 practices. Schools can use a maximum of three hours practice time per day.

Danny Nee took our/his top recruit, Beau Reid, to Nebraska in 1986. Sealed the deal by hiring Reid's dad as assistant coach.

Remember that. I thought it stunk to high-heaven at the time. Still do.
