Hello all, I'm Ryan. I'm new around here. Been lurking your board for about a month, and living in Athens for about 5 years. Can't tell you how much I appreciate the conversations I read on here, and the information that you all share daily.

I'll probably be pretty quiet in terms of posts, as I come to Athens (and to a degree, Basketball) later in life than most - translation, I'm fairly ignorant of most of what is going on around here. But, so far this seems a good place to begin correcting for all that.

Cheers

Welcome. If you say you are fairly ignorant of most of what's going on around here, you are in good company.

Couldn't one say that the posters with the higher quantity of posts are the most ignorant of us all?

Welcome to BA! Try not to let anyone's opinion intimidate you too much. None of us know what the hell we're talking about.

But here are some easy to remember rules will help you fit in:
1. Miami sucks.
2. Akron sucks.
3. (What is) Buffalo sucks.
4. Kent sucks.
5. No head coach ever gets fired or resigns. Only "TOS to" their job.
6. You must have a position on whether we need more BigManz or more slashers. It doesn't matter what your opinion is, because it's wrong.
7. Even though Miami sucks, Charlie Coles was OK.
8. But seriously, Miami sucks.
9. The Convo is the best. It could be better, but it's still the best.
10. The single most important thing you can do on BA is proper grammar.
11. Actually, that's a lie. Making fun of Miami is the most important thing you can do.

13. The Ozone is never as good as it once was. Ever. Even back when it was, it wasn't.

14. The War Between the States. Be ready for it to somehow come up fairly frequently.

a. the Evil Empire
b. Ohio A&M
c. Cowtown

16. That school in Huntington is referred to by the names of:
a. Turdistan
b. the Thundering Turds
c. West Virginia Junior College
d. I mean who cares they still suck so if you got one better throw it in.

That covers my two rules. Welcome to BA!

Thank you all for the warm welcomes. And now for my first quiz...

1. This, I knew. Married an alum, now prof, and raised-in-Athens girl.

2. This, I learned quickly.

3. This I learned from both bb teams last post-season.

4. This I just learned a few weeks ago.

5. So I've seen.

6. Seems that one of the freshmen are big...still to determine if any are slashers. Simmons is the only one I see consistently making it to the rim (scoring or drawing) starting from downtown. This puts the score at 3 to 1, bigs to slashers. If I can only have one more guy, I'll take another big. Seems to me you need more than just 2 slashers to truly threaten the opposition. Another big means you can have 2 on court most of the time, and 2 is all the threat I feel you need coming from bigs at one time. Any one on the roster currently could, in theory, up their slashing game (now that I don't have to include KK, heh). Although they could also gain weight, I don't see how you are gonna grow them six-eight inches over the summer. Now, by definition I realize that I am wrong, however what matters is, at the margin, how wrong?

7. My mother-in-law has informed me as such.

8. The key to education is repetition...repetition...erm...ah yes, repetition.

9. I have the spectrum sports package, and the travel channel. Seen plenty of places on both that you'll never get me to go to and like it.

10. Oh, thank heavens. If you had said being a good editor, and presenting a concise argument, I'd be screwed.

11. Well, in that case...Miami our stoopid.

12. New to Athens, recall...not euphemisms heh.

13. I read that thread. Won't speak for ozone, but I felt that last year and the year before, the 110 was tighter.

14. You mean like, solid / fluid / gas?

15. I don't even own anything red. And I went to Indiana 25 years ago.

16. Their shirts are pretty, though.

17. "X"UTM on any play during an Fball game is reason for reflexive face palm and complaining "predictable" post - including if it even results in a first down or a TD.....
18. "Siberia" (as in any sports related thread being banned to the Gulag) is in the "General Ohio University..." forum.
19. The disdain for the worthless electric hand dryers is universal across BA.
20. "Pretzels" are a euphemism for anything "stale", "getting old", or generally lacking or sub-standard vs expectations at a game day experience.
21. "Grunked". Even Charlie Coles could not impact with a positive spin on that traitorous bastard
22. The Green Kool-Aid. Required consumption - in moderation for best desired effects.....

Corrected that for you. We don't allow Confederate names for that war on this board.

Sometimes referred to as Benedict Grunkemeyer. See we can make references to other wars, in addition to the War of the Rebellion (1861-65).

22. If you ever venture over to the football board, you will learn that the Frank Solich era has been an absolute disaster because he has never won a MAC title and those of us who support him simply allow for mediocrity

23. Devin Davis....Not quite as evil as Grunkenmeyer but a close second (at least for me) for Miami hatred

24. Allie LaForce was a student and OU basketball player before she became famous and married a middle-reliever who played for the Indians and won a World Series with the Cubs last year.

Ah yes. Mr. Mophead himself. Absolutely loved watching Mr. Trent dominate and foul his whiny butt out.

Her husband (Joe Smith) is also from Ohio (Cincinnati) and pitched for Wright State before getting drafted. And of course you forgot Allie was Miss Teen Ohio and eventually Miss Teen USA in 2005 before coming to Athens.

Say what you will about Devin Davis, but he represents an era when the MAC had NBA and NBA-caliber players and when Ohio v. Miami meant something more than it has the past several years.

Give me more Devin Davises and others like him and fewer Logan McLanes on rosters of MAC teams.

Agreed and I would not necessarily say Gary dominated Davis. Davis played him as well as anyone.

Yeah, I think Gary was 2-3 against Devin Davis. The only stat that mattered.

No doubt about that.

Gary Trent - Ohio '95
Ben Handlogten - WMU '96
Ira Newble - Miami '97
Nate Huffman - Kent '97
Antonio Daniels - BG '97
Bonzi Wells - Balls '98
Casey Shaw - Toledo '98
Derrick Dial - EMU '98
Earl Boykins - EMU '98
Wally Szczerbiak - Miami '99
Tamar Slay - Marshall '02
Keith McLeod - BG '02
Theron Smith - Balls '03
Chris Kaman - CMU '03
Brandon Hunter - Ohio '03
John Edwards - Kent '04

All played multiple years or at least had a cup of coffee in the NBA and came through the MAC over that stretch of 9 years. Not to mention the Curis Simmons/Geno Ford/Antonio Gates/Devin Davis who were fantastic college players.

Certainly night and day from what we've seen since 2005.

Who has the conference had in the NBA since then? Richaun Holmes and N'dour are the only two I can even think of in the last 13 years.

So we went from 16 over 9 years, to 2 in the last 13 years (though I'd argue if he were 3 inches and 30 lbs bigger DJ would have made it).
