Sounds like Wichita State is bolting to the AAC as early as the 2017-18 season. Sounds like the Shockers looked over The Valley after Creighton's exit and didn't like the scenery. Their 10 seed in this year NCAA probably made their decision easier.

Maybe that idea of Ill St dominating the Valley is closer to reality....I mean they only have to dominate Loyola, Bradley, Mizz St, Evansville and IN State... Still Wi St to AAC? Wonder what our AD's take on that is?

The problem with them going to the AAC is that several of the top teams in the AAC are trying hard to leave. How long before UC, Memphis, UConn or Houston aren't in the league anymore?

In today's day and age of conference realignment, the only thing constant is change, so I don't think you can worry about that.

You really have two options:
1) The Gonzaga/Borna idea of I don't care what conference I'm in, screw you guys, I'm building this myself.
2) You jump to whatever conference best suits your needs TODAY. If that conference loses members/changes in a few years, then go find another conference that better suits your needs later. If one doesn't exist, get your closest friends together and make one (i.e. AAC and new Big East etc)

To much money and possibility out there to be loyal to a sinking ship (conference) anymore.

Unless the athletic department can make a lot more money by playing somewhere else (here I'm defining a lot more as $5 million more) we'll probably not move anywhere. MVC has no money and the AAC isn't enough. Could the AAC build up to the point financially where its attractive, I don't know. Show me the money.

Outside of some folks on this board, how many people/students/alum do you think really care of we are in the MAC, the Valley, AAC or anywhere else?

That's a really good question. I find value in being able to have road games, and a conference championship that are within half a day, or less, drive. By comparison, as a UC fan, it's unrealistic to consider going to a conference road game for them other than Memphis, or Temple. But times are changing, and that's not as important to some as it is to me & others.

TO be honest that is a great point. Building a power that stays in a one bid league....the Midwest is a much better place to do that than Spokane. One day drive to get on BIG, SEC, Big East etc schedules.

Same old same old is better than getting picked apart like the Big East or Conf-USA.

There's validity in this argument.

Interesting read about how trying to become relevant in football damaged the MVC. Good history lesson.

This is actually a pretty good reason why the MAC hasn't attempted further expansion and why having UMass was and is a dumb move. The benefits don't outweigh the costs.

Something stated in this article I'm curious about: "Almost 50 years later, football still drives conference membership and still pays most of the bills.

I'm interested to know how FCS football pays the bills. I've always assumed it was not a money maker, especially in a conference with basketball seemingly leading the way.

FCS teams still get big pay days to play at Power 5 schools in football.

I suppose that's a good point - I over looked that. Given the lower expenses, it probably does truly pay the bills.

Wichita State unanimously voted into the AAC. Start play next year in all sports. In a more broad sense, they essentially replace Navy for every sport except football, since Navy is a football-only member.

Now that it's official who are the candidates to replace the Shockers in The Valley? I would have to think Valley officials have had a pretty good indication that Wichita State was eyeing the door when the Shockers were against any big exit fee being imposed on Creighton when they left for the Big East.

I'm not so sure the the MVC is a premier league anymore with the loss of those two. I'm just hoping this makes the MAC better.

I wish Wichita would have stayed in the Valley, but I understand their move. They did everything right in non-league and get penalized because the MVC has been terrible since Creighton left. For RPI and SOS, they are going to get a much needed boost and hopefully a top seed line that comes with it. For the AAC, this was a very savvy move on their part and I hope it pays off in spades when it comes to basketball revenue.

The Valley I think is going to need to go outside the box on this one. Within their footprint there are not many schools that fit the bill of someone who could jump to the league now. Personally I believed Loyola of Chicago was a stretch take, but I get why they did.

That said, I think it would be a wise maneuver to consider a school like North Dakota State, who currently plays football with Valley teams and have success in other sports. Geographically and fan support wise this is a move that makes a lot of sense for all parties involved and can be beneficial to the membership. Going into the Dakotas in general could be a beneficial move, especially as the oil money up there begins to creep into the university systems up there.

Otherwise, their best move is going to come in the form of snagging Western Kentucky (who would be a great basketball brand in this conference but football would be SOL).

Some of the names being kicked around to replace Wichita State are Belmont, Valpo, Denver and Oral Roberts. When Creighton left the Valley in 2013 these schools along with Loyola were all visited by officials from the MVC. As for any of the XDSU schools, I think they will pass on an invite and stay in the Summit. The Summit's basketball tourney is in Sioux Falls, S.D. and is one of the better attended mid-major tourneys in the nation. I remember a couple of years ago watching SDSU and Oral Roberts playing each other in the women's semi finals with over 9,300 in attendance. Within the past couple of weeks the MBB HC at South Dakota passed on the Drake job opting to stay at South Dakota. Finally, the MVC Football Conference is NOT the same as the MVC in every other sport. They are two separate entities. So, anything is possible but it would not surprise me to see the XDSU schools pass on any invite. I also think Belmont would pass as well as ORU. Denver may go, but Denver would be on the very far end of the MVC travel wise.

I understand they're separate entities, but at the same time those schools make sense in terms of the types that could fill Arch Madness. I'm sorry but bringing in the four you listed (outside of Valpo) I think would not do any favors for that conference.

To me, for basketball, Belmont, Valpo, Omaha, NDSU, South Dakota, are logical choices to me. WKU would be good too, but I can't see them leaving without a home for football.

I like Belmont for two reasons: 1) Quality basketball program that steps right in as a strong representative of the conference. 2) Probably more importantly, Nashville Media Market.

Here's another wild thought: What about NKU? Gaining serious ground as a program, Cincy media market is a basketball hotbed.

EDIT: Article from John Rothstein about what's reportedly happening.
