Despite of my thoughts of Mike Davis during his time at Indiana, (not a huge fan of the Bracey Wright era....yak!) the guy can put teams in position to win. Not suprised that they're the favorites. They do the traditional SWAC No Mercy Tour, which means you're 1-11 at best coming into league play.

Smartass lol.

Meant it as in they rarely get to play home games, mostly P5 and good schools to boot for the funding of their athletic dept.

Oh I wasn't trying to be a smart ass I was agreeing with you by laying the facts out there. I didn't realize the entire conference was that way until I saw their records.

I didn't realize this either. That would've been some important context to add to the article.

You debunked my whole 1 win theory with 4 win teams. All's good, but in general this is a league that shows no mercy.

I love this quote from Mike Davis-

“To have a home game you’ve gotta pay the officials $4,000-$5,000. The people [working the scorers’] table are another $2,500. So in order to have a home game, we’ve gotta clear $10,000. We’re not gonna clear $10,000. And I don’t want to waste my time playing NAIA teams. If we play a lower team, nobody’s gonna come in and see that. The math is simple.”

I don't disagree with his logic on the NAIA teams, but I'd have to ask why, after 3 conference tournament championships in 4 years, why can't they clear $10,000 on a home game in a nice building that seats 8,000? In Houston!

I also have questions about the scorer's table cost, and the officials costs. Seems to me like that's high, but I don't know any facts to support my suspicions.

So why on earth are they playing basketball at this level?

It makes no sense at all.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

If you're referencing breaking even or better on a home game, you could ask the same of many of our conference mates in hoops and most MAC teams in football.

If you go on the road (like they are) and play buy games (like they are) you can easily clear A LOT of money.

I'm surprised more programs haven't gone "all-in" on buy-games just for the money. I liked when Ohio played 1-2 buy games and used that money to pay for home games themselves... Good equation for teams with a fanbase. No fanbase, why not go on the road and cash in?

I've seen crazier things happen.

1st article states the P5 is paying $2,500-$3,000 a game for officials PLUS a travel stipend on-top of that.

Figure the SWAC is only paying maybe $1,250 a game plus a $250 travel stipend multiple that by three officials and you're up to $4,500.

I don't know the specifics for basketball, but in some sports the scorers operating the game clock and managing the substitutions are actually officials. Not sure how that factors into this equation since he mentioned the scorers table seperately, but they'd be paid a decent chunk as well...
Again, not sure for basketball specifically, but in some sports these new video replay systems involve ANOTHER licensed official behind-the-scenes watching game footage live. (A great example of technology CREATING jobs and also raising operating costs...)
