ATHENS – On a cold, rainy night, Ohio turned to its running game to take a 42-14 victory against winless UMass in its final home game of the season Tuesday at Peden Stadium.
Sieh Bangura led the way with 196 yards and two touchdowns, while Duncan Brune and Parker Navarro each added two scores on the ground. The Bobcats (7-4, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) racked up 363 yards rushing and pulled away to finish unbeaten at home for the second season in a row.
Navarro attempted just eight passes on the night, completing three of them for 28 yards, but the Minutemen (0-11, 0-7 MAC) had no answer to the rushing attack.
By contrast, UMass was forced into passing situations but threw for just 90 yards with two interceptions on 28 attempts.
After a slight weather delay to start the game, the Minutemen, last in the nation in points scored, marched down the field to a touchdown and an early lead, aided by a penalty. Jay Crable was flagged for roughing the passer on what would have been a third-down stop.
Quarterback AJ Hairston was injured on a 19-yard scramble, but Brandon Rose came in and completed a pair of passes to cap the drive, including a 10-yard scoring pass to Owen Anderson, making it 7-0.
The Minutemen returned the favor of extending a drive with a penalty on a late hit out of bounds on a third-down run by Bangura that was short of the line to gain. Navarro had a 17-yard run to set up his own 2-yard touchdown run that tied the game.
Although UMass had multiple chances to score again in the first half, it did not, beginning with a fumble. A bad snap on fourth-and-1 from the Ohio 35 was recovered by Pius Odjugo.
The Bobcats also failed to convert on a fourth down when Navarro was dropped in the backfield on a fourth-and-3 play at the UMass 31 early in the second quarter, but on they took the lead for good on their next possession.
Brune converted a fourth-and-1 from shy of midfield with a 4-yard run and then broke off a 29-yard gain before a 19-yard completion from Navarro to Eian Pugh. Two plays later, Brune hurdled a defender on his way to a 13-yard touchdown run that made it 14-7.
A Jack Fries interception of Rose set up another Ohio touchdown. An 18-yard Bangura run was the big play of the drive before he scored on a 3-yard run on the first play following a lightning delay to make it 21-7 with 3:44 left in the half.
UMass converted a fourth down on the ensuing drive but opted for a 55-yard field goal attempt from Derek Morris on fourth-and-6, and it came up short. After Navarro was sacked on fourth-and-2 from the Bobcats’ 45, Morris got another field goal chance. It came after a roughing the passer penalty on Crable on fourth down, but the 47-yard attempt also missed.
Navarro fumbled at the end of a 22-yard run early in the second half, and this time, the Minutemen took advantage. Grant Jordan threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Perdo, making it a seven-point game, 21-14.
Ohio dominated the final quarter and a half to put it away. Bangura scored on fourth-and-goal from 2 yards out with 3:57 left in the third quarter, and Derek Reagans sacked Jordan on fourth-and-6 early in the fourth quarter.
Bangura had a 33-yard run to set up a Navarro 4-yard touchdown, making it 35-14. Jordan was intercepted by Tank Pearson, and that led to Brune’s second score, a 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal.
Brune finished with 84 yards on 14 carries, while Navarro had 14 carries for 81 yards.
Sharing quarterback duties in place of Hairston, Rose was 5-of-6 passing for 34 yards, while Jordan was 10 of 21 for 56 yards. Both had a touchdown pass and an interception.
UMass had just 125 yards rushing on the night and was outgained 391-215 overall.
In addition to his interception, Fries had 10 tackles, including 1.5 for loss.
After an extended break, the Bobcats wrap up the regular season with a trip to Buffalo at noon Nov. 28 on ESPNU.
