No. 23 Miami remains unbeaten with 90-74 victory

RedHawks pull away in 2nd half

OXFORD – No. 23 Miami remained unbeaten with a 90-74 victory against Ohio on Friday night at Millett Hall.

The RedHawks (25-0, 12-0 Mid-American Conference) were hard to stop, shooting 51.7% while putting five players in double figures, led by Brant Byers’ 21 points.

Shooting 46.7% from the field, the Bobcats (13-13, 7-6 MAC) could not keep up despite a game-high 22 points from Jackson Paveletzke.

After leading 43-35 at halftime, Miami scored the first five points of the second half and led by double digits the rest of the way.

Justin Kirby’s 3-pointer sparked a run that began to put it away. Almar Atlason and Peter Suder scored layups, and Miami was up 65-48 with 13:14 remaining. Byers connected on a 3-pointer with 6:56 to go that pushed the lead to 79-59.

The Bobcats played fairly even with the RedHawks for the first 10 minutes of the game, trailing just 19-17 following a Javan Simmons layup. But he was called for a technical foul for interfering with the inbounder while lying on the ground after the basket, and Byers eventually made three free throws.

Ohio trailed 31-28 after a Paveletzke jumper at the 4:30 mark. Miami, though, finished the half strong before rolling in the second half. The RedHawks went up double digits with a 7-0 run.

Simmons had 12 points, while Ajay Sheldon, JJ Kelly and Aidan Hadaway all scored eight points.

Suder had 20 points, with Eian Elmer finished with 15 points. Luke Skaljac tallied 12 points, and Atlason finished with 11 points.

The Bobcats host Ball State at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Convo.
