DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Ohio could not slow down another top-notch opponent as George Mason ran away with a 92-69 victory Monday in the opening round of the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center.
The Patriots scored 52 points in the first half and was led by Kory Mincy on the night with 22 points. Masai Troutman scored 18 points, Riley Allenspach added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Fatt Hill tallied 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Aidan Hadaway led the Bobcats (1-5) with 16 points and five rebounds, while Javan Simmons scored 12 points.
Unbeaten George Mason (6-0) took control from the start, going up 15-6 on a Mincy 3-pointer with 15:52 left. The lead reached double digits a few minutes later on a Hill layup that made it 20-9.
Ajay Sheldon made a 3-pointer that got Ohio to within six at 26-20, but that was as close as it was the rest of the way. A short time later, Allenspach capped a 7-0 run that made it 40-24. Hill closed out the half with a three-point play that put the Patriots up 52-33.
The advantage ballooned to 62-36 on back-to-back 3-pointers from Jahri Long and Mincy, and then the Patriots had their biggest run of the night, scoring 18 straight points and taking an 80-39 lead on a Troutman dunk with 12:35 remaining.
Ohio had its best stretch of nine straight points in the middle of the second half but still trailed 85-53 after an Ayden Evans tip-in. The Bobcats also scored the final nine points of the game.
After back-to-back 28-point efforts, Jackson Paveletzke was held to just seven points on 3-of-7 shooting. He had five assists.
On a difficult night, positives for Ohio included Jalen Breath’s return to the lineup. He had six points and a team-leading six rebounds in 19 minutes. Also, Sheldon had his best shooting game of the season, going 2 of 3 on 3-pointers and scoring eight points.
The Bobcats shot 41.4% from the field, including 30.8% from long range, and went 13 of 20 at the foul line. The Patriots dropped to 46.4% for the night after shooting much better through the first 30 minutes and were 14 of 31 (45.2%) on 3-pointers with only six turnovers and 16 offensive rebounds.
Long had a game-high eight assists to go with his nine points that came on 3-of-5 3-point shooting. Mincy went 6 of 11 from long range, and Troutman was 4 of 4.
Florida Atlantic (5-1) beat Loyola Marymount 76-65 in the other semifinal, meaning the Bobcats will take on the Lions (6-1) in the third-place game of the tournament at 5 p.m. Tuesday on CBS Sports Network.
