St. Mary's too much for Ohio in 90-60 win

Gaels finish first half with flurry to separate

MORAGA, Calif. – True freshman Liam Campbell scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half as St. Mary’s was too much for Ohio in a 90-60 blowout Tuesday night at UCU Pavilion.

The Gaels (3-0) jumped out to a 45-27 halftime lead and the game was never closer than that in the second half.

Mikey Lewis and Paulius Murauskas added 14 points each for balanced St. Mary’s.

Jackson Paveletzke led Ohio (1-2) with 19 points, while Javan Simmons had 12 points and Aidan Hadaway 10 points.

It took a little while for the Gaels to take over. The Bobcats wen tup 9-4 on a Simmons 3-pointer before St. Mary’s went on an 11-0 run to move in front.

Paveletzke made a 3-pointer to get Ohio to within 22-20 midway through the first half and trailed 25-22 after a Paveletzke layup. The Gaels scored the next seven points and later had a 7-0 run before scoring the final six points of the half as part of a bigger 20-5 run.

St. Mary’s then scored the first seven points of the second half to really take control with a 52-27 lead. Ohio only got as close as 56-36 on a Hadaway layup after that, with the margin remaining in the 20s until the final basket.

St. Mary’s, which last year went 26-8 and finished ranked in the top 25 at the end of the regular season, shot 50% for the game, including from beyond the arc where it was 11 of 22. Ohio finished at only 37.5%, which included a 6-of-24 performance from long range.

Ajay Sheldon was just 1 of 6 on 3-pointers but had six rebounds and six assists, leading the team in both of those categories.

The Gaels had a 40-29 rebounding advantage and forced more turnovers, 14-9.

Ohio faces another difficult challenge with a road game against Louisville at noon Saturday.
