Miami snaps Ohio's streaks with 85-68 victory

Lairy, Safford combined for 50 points

OXFORD – Miami shot over 60% to put an end to a pair of streaks Saturday at Millett Hall.

The RedHawks snapped Ohio’s six-game winning streak while also ending the Bobcats’ run of seven straight victories in the Battle of the Bricks rivalry series with an 85-68 victory.

Miami (11-18, 5-11 Mid-American Conference) shot 60.8% in the game, including 65.2% in the second half when it pulled away after leading by just two at halftime. Mekhi Lairy (26 points) and Morgan Safford (24 points) combined for 50 points.

Jaylin Hunter and Dwight Wilson had 19 points each for the Bobcats (17-12, 9-7 MAC).

Leading just 49-48 after a Gave Wiznitzer putback for Ohio, Miami scored eight straight points – six of them by Safford – to build a cushion. The Bobcats got as close as 65-48 with 7:55 left on a Hunter 3-pointer, but the RedHawks got the lead to double digits with back-to-back three-point plays, one by Safford and one by Kamari Williams.

From there, the closest Ohio got was seven, and Miami used a late 11-0 run to completely put the game out of reach.

That came after a competitive first half that mostly the RedHawks led by small margins.

Ohio shot just 38.1% for the game but avoided a blowout by forcing 21 turnovers.

The Bobcats face Kent State at 7 p.m. Tuesday on the road.
