Detroit Mercy builds big lead in win over Ohio

Titans' Davis scores 28 points

DETROIT – Ohio made a late run, but it was not nearly enough in an 88-74 loss to Detroit Mercy on Wednesday night at Calihan Hall.

The Titans had a lead as big as 72-47 with 10:29 remaining before the Bobcats closed strong to get to within single digits in the final minutes.

Detroit (2-1) shot 51.7% in the game and got 28 points from super senior Antoine Davis, who has averaged 24.6 per game in his career with the Titans.

Devon Baker led Ohio (1-2) with 16 points, while AJ Clayton scored 15 points and Miles Brown 12 points. Dwight Wilson had eight points and 13 rebounds.

Despite the Bobcats scoring the first six points, Detroit took control in the first half, going on a 15-0 run before building a 20-point advantage at 43-23 with 3:31 to play.

Ohio was able to cut its deficit to 47-34 before halftime, but the Titans began to pull away again in the second half. They led just 52-41 when they went on a 13-0 run to move in front by 24 points only five minutes into the second half.

The Titans’ lead reached 25 points at 72-47 with 10:29 to go and still was at 20 points with an 80-60 score with 4:36 to play. The Bobcats got as close as 81-72 on a Clayton putback at the 1:24 mark, but coach Jeff Boals was called for a technical, and Detroit pulled away again from the foul line.

The Bobcats shot reasonably well overall at 45.3% but were just 6 of 26 (23.1%) from long range, whereas the Titans went 11 of 26 (42.3%) on 3-pointers.

Jayden Stone and Damezi Anderson backed Davis with 15 points each, while Jordan Phillips scored 13 points.

Ohio takes on Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Crisler Arena on the Big Ten Network.
