Kinsey's 28 points lead Marshall past Ohio

Wilson has third straight double-double for Bobcats

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Taevion Kinsey scored 28 points to lead Marshall to an 81-67 victory against Ohio on Sunday at the Cam Henderson Center.

After trailing by double digits in the first half, Ohio cut its deficit to one at the start of the second half, but Marshall answered back and pulled away.

Dwight Wilson III posted his third consecutive double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Jason Preston had 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, but he also had six turnovers.

Jarrod West and Mikel Beyers had 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Thundering Herd (4-0).

An 8-0 run by Marshall put it ahead 31-19 with 3:43 remaining in the first half, but Ohio (4-2) ended up closing with nine straight points to get to within 35-33 at the break. The Bobcats got as close as one on a Ben Vander Plas free throw to begin the second half.

The Thundering Herd gradually added to their lead and used a 7-0 run to move ahead 57-45 midway through the second half. After a Lunden McDay layup for the Bobcats, Beyers hit a 3-pointer, and Obinna Anochili-Killen added a jumper to make Marshall’s lead 15 points.

From there, the closest the Bobcats got was 73-63 on a pair of Miles Brown free throws with 3:11 to go.

Marshall shot 54.5% overall despite going just 5 of 21 from long range. Ohio made just 40.0% of its field goal tries. Kinsey was an efficient 10 of 13.

Vander Plas had nine points and four rebounds for the Bobcats, but he was 2 of 6 shooting, including 1 of 5 on 3-pointers, and had five turnovers. Ben Roderick missed the second straight game with an injury but is expected to return soon.

Ohio’s next scheduled game is its Mid-American Conference opener Dec. 22 at Akron, though it is possible for another nonconference game to be added before then.
