Bobcats pull away from Panthers in 2nd half

Dartis leads short-handed Ohio with 24 points

ATHENS – Short-handed Ohio pulled away in the second half to defeat Prairie View A&M, 84-65, on Wednesday night at The Convo.

Jordan Dartis led the Bobcats (6-5) with 23 points, while James Gollon provided 17 points off the bench. Kevin Mickle, Teyvion Kirk and Gavin Block scored 14 points apiece.

With Jason Carter reinjured and Mike Laster sitting out with a hamstring issue, Ohio used a seven-man rotation.

Gary Blackston led the Panthers, who led 31-29 at halftime. Zachary Hamilton added 18 points.

Prairie View actually went up 36-31 early in the second half on a Hamilton 3-pointer, and it regained the lead, 39-36, on an Austin Starr 3-pointer after Ohio tied it.

Dartis began to turn the game in the Bobcats’ favor with a 3-pointer and then three free throws to put them on top. Kirk added a layup to cap the run at 8-0.

After the teams traded baskets, Gollon hit back-to-back 3-pointers to add to Ohio’s lead.

Starr’s 3-pointer with 9:01 remaining got the Panthers back to within 55-52, but Ohio scored seven straight points at the foul line to go up by double digits. With the Bobcats’ lead at 66-57 with four minutes to go, an 18-8 run put the game out of reach.

Doug Taylor scored only 2 points but grabbed 11 rebounds for Ohio. Kirk had eight rebounds and seven assists.

The Bobcats shot 45.5 percent, including 10 of 22 on 3-pointers, and made 24 of 30 free throws. The Panthers (2-10) shot 40.6 percent, with only 7 of 26 3-pointers included in that mark, and they got to the foul line just seven times, making six.

Ohio completes nonconference play when it hosts Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m. Dec. 29 at The Convo.
