It appears in the coach's divorce case in a motion filed Dec. 2 that he in buying a new residence and is about to close on Dec. 15. The motion also says he is seeking housing for himself and his minor daughter. The Case No. is 25DR0098 in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas. A second motion also was filed on Dec. 2 by Coach Smith's attorney to seal the motion and other pertinent pleadings in the divorce case. You may find the case filings at this site:

I don't think you can put somebody on leave because they're getting divorced.

Won't repeat any of the details, but the rumors that were posted in the short-lived "Worrying Situation" thread were largely (if I recall) about the behavior pre-divorce.

Whatever that is, presumably it's something that the University feels either 1) gives them the ability to terminate with cause or 2) gives them the leverage to negotiate a favorable buyout because Smith/Attorney see the risk of an arbitrator deciding in favor of the University.

Given the case was filed over 4 months ago and any/all allegations are likely known to the University Administration would someone be proceeding with a home closing less than 2 weeks away if he/she felt their job was in jeopardy?

It’s DR, CR is the code for criminal cases, DR is Domestic Relations cases.

No idea. Not sure how we could know that. Tons of variables there -- it could be it's about custody or about trying to shift assets in a way that's beneficial post-divorce.

Honestly, no idea.

If what I heard today is true about coach, I hope Hauser gets the job. I will not speculate but I'm sure you guys can piece it together. Not a good look if it's true.

The divorce case is still pending. No divorce has been finalized at this point.

If he's getting canned over a relationship, I would assume there is some kind of Title IX violation at play. That most likely would mean a relationship with a student or an employee in the athletics department.
Nearly everyone who works at a university (especially coaches) undergoes Title IX training/awareness so if you violate it's knowingly.

Since there are no official charges, publicized police reports, third-party civil lawsuits, etc., it is all conjecture and rumors at this point. That said, I don't believe Title IX and/or ECRC investigations are public, FWIW.

This entire thing is ridiculous. The public is entitled to know more even if details have to be withheld. The man is a public employee being paid with taxpayer dollars.

Maybe the answer's right in front of us and it solves two big Bobcatattack mysteries in one. He must've taken the moneyline bet on Ball State. Only real explanation for that performance.

(Said in jest...I don't actually think he bet against OUr team)

From Grant Kiefer with WOUB via Twitter: "Brian Smith's attorney provided an update, stating that Smith still remained on leave, voluntarily, at the university's request, with pay. The attorney claims Smith has still not been provided with a formal reason for this request from Ohio. The university declined to comment"

Additionally Kiefer mentioned: "The attorney also stated that Smith remains optimistic about the future of Ohio Football and looks forward to getting back on the field with his players and coaches as soon as possible"

If this is the case, I find it very strange he was not told a reason for the leave and still has not been told

Taking the attorney at his word--no reason not to, as he's pretty good at his job--I have one question. If he knows the allegations are not related to the claims by his client, then he must know what the allegations are, correct? And if so, how? Smith apparently doesn't even know.

Weird.

It's clear that the university is playing this one close to the vest. The total silence from the university side is telling. If it wasn't all that serious, and there was a good chance that Smith would be returning, you'd think the university would give a hint of that. The "radio silence," as one person who messaged me called it, is deafening. I suspect, and this is only a guess, that the university attorneys, and probably outside counsel they've hired, are compiling evidence to prove whatever they are going charge Smith with doing. They want an air-tight case before they go public. And, before that, they'll probably offer a settlement to Smith. It's pretty obvious that they believe Smith did something very serious. It doesn't take too much tealeaf reading to figure that out. Exactly what it might be is totally unclear.

Mike, I think a key phrase here is that he hasn't been provided with a "formal" reason. Attorneys like to mince words. I think they've probably told him what they suspect he did wrong, but they have not put it in writing and have not "charged" him formally with anything.

So Smith is
-on leave
-voluntarily
-at the University's request
-with pay
-does not have a formal reason why he is on leave

If that reporting is true, man is that the strangest thing I've ever heard.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!
