Our federal government should be as good with "radio silence".

I just hope O.U. is giving the coaching search the appropriate priority.

Schools don't formerly announce that a job is open and that they have a list of candidates they're looking at and then list them 1, 2, 3 and 4. That's not how this works. They probably have a talent search firm on speed dial and they use that firm's results. But all of that is done behind closed doors. Next thing that would blow your mind is these negotiations rarely happen on the campus of said university. They're probably meeting in Columbus, actually.

Our former AD, Jim Schaus ,used to keep an updated list of available coaches and
their phone numbers in all sports.

If a coach left O.U. ,he was on the phone.

I may be wrong, but based on what's going on with the football coaching situation, JC doesn't seem to have a sense of urgency when it comes to O.U. athletics.

A month passed between Knorr's firing and Solich being announced.

I know you really, really want to blame Cromer for something, but you're reaching. You hire people. How often does it take 10 days start to finish?

As I have mentioned before if this was an SEC or Big 10 school, the AD would be held responsible!!! For crying out loud the agent wasn’t even permitted in the room. Why have an agent if they aren’t allowed in contract talks? This is a total mess that is all on our administration!!!

This gets worse and worse.

Contracts run from July 1 to the end of June. If he signed a new deal on October 2024, as you say he wanted, or December 2024, or Jan. 2025 or March 2025, it would not matter. The raise wouldn't kick in til July 1, 2025 anyway.

His peak value was after the MACC. He signed a deal before. I wish he would have waited. That was his choice. No playing victim now.

As for Big 10 or SEC, show me one extension during regular season. One. What you post is bordering on delusional.

Ikr. And he’s last paid in the AAC. Free steak dinner for everyone on here if he wins a few games, knocks on Mike Hill’s door, and gets a raise during the middle of next season.

The whole family was drinking in the suite. 😂 Tori was posting. Whole family was in Charlotte 12 hours later. What are you even yappin about? No one cares about the dog.

What should be investigated? Mean messages about the guy who interviewed and accepted a job BEFORE THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME? lol

Miss Albin with all due respect. Log off.

Was coach albins family not supposed to celebrate Tim accomplishing everything he set out to do??? Also, super weird you follow Tori & are hating on her family. Also not Miss Albin… close friend :) but nice try lol. Get a life and stop being so obsessed with their family. Weirdo.

You are the one that started in about Brooke and Facebook and the Animal Hospital receipt.

Let’s at least be honest with ourselves, this was never about a sick dog. That whole story is just bad shtick. Timmy had a bad season through early October, he saw a way out, so he took it. In doing so, he cost him and his family millions. Just call it like you see it instead of hiding behind a sick dog or bible verses. They were BAD BAD BAD against Kentucky, Syracuse, and Miami and they rode a bad MAC to a title. It’s fine. I’ll fault Cromer all day long but there doesn’t need to be “investigations” about why Timmy left Athens. We are fine, already moved on. It’s the Pro-Albin crowd that can’t seem to understand why a guy 2 years removed from 3-9 couldn’t get an extension in mid-October, so he leapt at a lateral (at best) opportunity. Just admit the guy made a weak career move.

Let us know how your “investigation” of Albin leaving turns out. A real Kefauver Comittee you are sure to assemble. (Look it up since I know you have no idea).

I’ve been preaching the same thing for 30+ years about making Ohio Athletics a better entity. Well before you arrived…. and I’ll do it long after you are gone. Go throw fists with some 49ers who actually care what you have to say. I’m here to make things better and to try to keep us nationally relevant…..sorry if that pisses you off. I’m sure things will be great in the bottom quarter of the AAC.

Well, this has been an interesting follow…

Pardon sharing a long form set of insights.

In the summer of 2021, Coach Solich had a really unfortunate event that led to his premature and untimely retirement. It seems pretty clear that if there would have been an “heir apparent” through Frank’s tenure, it would have been Jimmy Burrow. More comfortable in groups and in front of a microphone, a little more polished, and consistently good performance on his side of the line of scrimmage seemed to make Jimmy “the guy”. But we never found out because…Joe won the Heisman…gave the speech…the donations poured in, and Jimmy and Robin had a foundation to run and a son in the NFL to proudly follow.

Coach Albin becomes “the guy”, and due to the untimely event above, never really received the “grooming” required to be immediately ready for prime time in season one. He struggled in public appearances, was challenged in front of donors because he never had the opportunity to be “the guy”, and the on the field product that first season wasn’t quite right…and for good and understandable reasons.

How did the University reward Tim after a challenging season? They stood by him and supported him in various ways. Alongside Coach Solich, who was placed on retainer for several seasons in part to help mentor Tim, the Administration and Development staff saw to it that Coach Albin was able to have a lot of exposure to faculty, staff, donors and sponsors, allowing him to grow as a public speaker and improve his off the field craft. Tim invested in improving his skills as well, as he knew this was an important part of his new role. He became very engaged in the University community and the Athens community.

And how did those investments turn out? Pretty darn good for all parties involved: The University, the Department, Administration, the coaching staff…and most importantly, the Student Athletes. Three double digit win seasons in a row, two MACC appearances and the long-coveted Championship. Coach was rewarded with a contract re-negotiation that led to a raise, improved bonuses and automatic extensions for eight-win seasons. Administration also expanded the coaching staff budget to bring in more talent to support the program and allow Coach to support and enhance the program. Coach honed his craft on and off the field, became a more rounded professional…and ultimately earned himself increased notoriety which led to opportunities that he hadn’t been afforded when he was simply the OC. And we, the fans, also benefited…greatly. Something we all have been yearning for since 1968.

Did the time leading up to and immediately after the MACC go very awkwardly…clearly.

Was the University aware of other job offers to Coach…absolutely.

Was the Department working to enhance the compensation programs for Football…indeed.

You see, just as it occurred with John Groce in 2010, after the first NCAA tourney appearance, supplemental budget dollars to boost coaches’ salaries come from…donors. Many of you run and work in business, and you all know that you don’t just “find” budget dollars. They have to come from somewhere. What do you think the University/Department is going to do: eliminate Baseball so the revenue generating sports can get an increase in salaries? Eliminate the World Religions department?

JG had a “Basketball Enhancement Program”…funded by donors…that was effectively his raise. And to do something like that…you need the element of TIME. T Boone Pickens ain’t walkin’ through that door. It takes a lot of folks like…US…to pay for things like that. So, if you want something like that to come together overnight in this program, you might as well give up waiting.

It isn’t the responsibility of the leader of an organization to pay its employees at a rate equal to or higher than its peers. It is their responsibility to hire and retain the best associates at a rate that fits into the budget they are presented, and if they are contract employees, to honor those contracts in good faith.

You need to remember five things:
1. We have the second smallest Intercollegiate Athletics budget in the MAC, and for its investment, OHIO is getting a great ROI.
2. The MAC has the smallest budgets in the Group of Five.
3. Anything you do for Football, you are almost certainly going to have to be prepared to match in MBB, as those two are very much toggled together in our athletic department.
4. The Administration and Board of Trustees is not about to put the onus on Students to increase ICA budgets.
5. And OHIO, as an institution, is KILLING IT regarding student applications and total enrollment, as well as most other metrics versus our peer institutions in the Midwest. (student retention, graduation rates, etc.) And OHIO is doing this WITHOUT being in a higher level, more prestigious Athletic Conference.

To insinuate that anyone was “disrespected” when you consider the factors above is clearly not looking HOLISTICALLY at what happened over the last four seasons. As some have already noted…we didn’t make the MACC in ’23 and we got COMPLETELY THROTTLED at home by Fiami…so one could have easily argued that Chuck Martin was the best coach in the MAC going into the 2024 MAC, having won the MACC five years prior. In 2023, we went on to win nine games, eventually ten, and Coach was rewarded, as per the terms of his renegotiated contract.

As others have noted…. we didn’t exactly look like a juggernaut after the first four weeks in 2024…and again got THROTTLED by FIAMI. FEW could have been the soothsayer that would have predicted we would win out, but most rational people would have viewed that eventuality dubiously.

And yet WE DID win out…and the Department started working on an enhancement…which obviously couldn’t happen on Coach Albin’s timeline. Appearances are that the die was cast before the MACC weekend. Who knows what Coach Albin and his family were ultimately considering as their “tipping point” factors for deciding to take the Charlotte gig. I know one thing: they don’t owe us an explanation. They invested 20 years in Athens, and I am thankful for that investment. They are good people.

If anyone has followed Tim and Brooke on social media, you could see that they LOVE to vacation on lakes like Lake of the Ozarks, in Florida, etc. I'm certain they may have fallen in love with the idea of being able to buy a lake house, and the trappings that would bring every day of the week while living on Lake Norman. They likely didn't expect OHIO to be able to dig into the couch cushions to find the money for a counter. Perhaps the Albins wanted access to better climate, more health care options…and perhaps wanted to be able to go to a Target and take less than an hour to get there. Corporate sponsorships are clearly going to be more plentiful at UNC-C…and NIL dollars will be easier to come by…and there won’t be one of the top three athletic programs sitting 74 miles away, taking nearly 100% of the spotlight off of their accomplishments. And all that comes while still being a short six hour drive from friends and family that they love, and who support them.

Was the departure awkward…sure. Did he think he was worth more money...of course...don’t we all? Was Coach disrespected during his tenure at OHIO…no. Do I believe Coach has axes to grind with University leadership when in most post-game interviews, including before the MACC trophy presentation, he first thanked LSG/JC, and he specifically requested that LSG and JC address the team post-game in the locker room BEFORE he or any of the coaches addressed the team…not likely. Am I thankful for what Tim was able to achieve in his 20 years in the program…absolutely. Is the program in a better place at this point in time…without a doubt. Does anyone deserve to be fired due to the last several week’s events…absolutely not.

Just watch Parker Titsworth’s passionate video on College Green: there is clearly a strong culture in place with the team and program that has the student athletes bought it, and it would be great if the next leader can carry that forward. I’m thankful for everything those Student Athletes have done for OHIO, they deserve to be rewarded in kind and I hope OHIO can deliver them a great leader. It’s a tough decision that will be made, and at this point, I am choosing to trust the people paid to make the decision to make the right one.

So, everyone just relax, enjoy the history that we just witnessed…and let’s beat those ‘cocks on Friday!

Mid70s- maybe you are blind to the facts that the athletic director refused to negotiate and reward or value Coach Albin. Maybe you think Ohio was the sixth best football program in the conference and therefore his salary was justified. I’m guessing that Ohio’s volleyball and basketball coaches aren’t the sixth highest paid in the conference. Those programs haven’t performed as well as the football program the last three seasons, but yet they are rewarded salary wise way better than most league coaches in there respective sports. No that isn’t disrespect! Maybe you think that anyone off the street will come in and win ten games in three consecutive football seasons. Maybe you think it is ok for the AD to stand beside Coach Albin after every game in the post game press conference to make sure everything goes accordingly. Especially when the administration didn’t do this with Coach Solich or Boals? I guess that is ok to single Coach Albin out by being right beside him in every post game press conference. No that isn’t disrespect! After the Rice interview the administration was given ample time to come up with a contract. They failed to do this after starting contract talks in June and putting them off time and time again. I have no idea why anyone would not value what Coach Albin accomplished at Ohio University. Some of you could be elated that he left and could care less about the football program. For those that do care about the program, please cherish these three consecutive ten win seasons, and being one of five programs to win 10 games three straight years because the odds of this happening again at this school aren’t great. Mike C and others what do you have against the guy who just won a conference title for this university for the first time since 1968? What do you have against the man who was one of five coaches in the country to earn ten wins in three consecutive seasons? What do you have against a coach who was second to none in conference wins the last four seasons? Maybe you people will be satisfied when Ohio doesn’t achieve the type of success I mentioned above.

Excellent post, DA. We need more insight like this. Rarely do we see something that actually points out the challenges that our department and University face when it comes to this stuff. Doing more with less is an incredible attribute, it just makes you wonder what we could do with more.

Bottom line OCF is that this situation never should have happened!! Period! You believe these other people who are anti Coach Albin if you want. The truth is the man was not treated with the respect and value he deserved. The AD was aware of the Rice interview and how much they offered several days before the Ball State game. She kept putting off contract talks to Coach Albin. She knew that other schools were interested. The Rice offer was twice the pay of what Ohio paid him, but he turned it down because they wanted him immediately. Name another school that has achieved the success the Bobcats have achieved the last three seasons in the conference. Name another coach at Ohio that accomplished what Coach Albin accomplished the last three seasons in winning ten games. I realize this is 2024 and schools play more games than they did 60 years ago. However no coach since 1968 accomplished what Coach Albin accomplished. The sad thing is that he wasn’t looking for a bunch more money. Look at his contract details at Charlotte. Doesn’t it seem odd that a 20 year employee would leave for just slightly more money for himself. Coach Albin was the sixth highest paid conference coach in October of 2024. Do you think that was fair? How in the world would Ohio allow Albin to be paid less than a new coach at WMU and Buffalo? Total lack of respect!! This administration knew before the Ball St game what they needed to do, but they kept stalling and it came back to bite them. The AD is responsible for this mess!

Cignetti got a 8 year extension on November 16-there’s one in the past 3 weeks.

I found one other. Mark Stoops two years ago. Signed a deal through 2031 prior to the season ender against Vandy, which they lost.

He's gone 11-15 since and it will cost UK $44 million to fire him.

Let’s check in on how the AD is doing.
