I'm not saying they don't have a lot of Bobcats, they do, but it was more of a recruiting issue where we would bring a candidate to the hiring manager and they would mention the party school issue. They may have hired that candidate because they were the best fit for the job.

I just can't understand why people don't understand that the Party school reputation lessens the value of our degree.

The party school knock is an old time thing. With the school working hard to bring in a more diverse socio-economic student I think its helping to cut into the old party rep. No offense to the party school types on here but its kids from pop-tart suburban households which plan to go back to live with their parents after graduation that are doing the hard core partying.

Beg to differ with you. As one who worked in the public schools of Ohio from 1984 till 2017, if i've heard it once I've heard it 100 times from high school juniors and seniors when asked if they were considering OU. A very common answer was "my mom and dad won't let me go there. It's a party school."

On the flip side, some of the best yearbook advisers that I worked with were OU grads.

Yes, very prevalent in the area and throughout OHIO....Have heard this many times while I worked in admissions.

Several years ago Harvard and now all Ivy League schools stopped awarding scholarships on the basis of academic performance. All of their scholarships are now on the basis of need, as they define it. I thought it was a big mistake then, and still think so. It might make sense for a very talented kid with high SAT scores, from a middle class background, to take a full-ride academic scholarship from a state school rather than be saddled with maybe a half-tuition scholarship at an Ivy League school. A kid from a very low socio-economic family with the same credentials would probably be wiser to go to the Ivy League school.

This is where you fail....Harvard and Yale do not give merit scholarships, in fact their financial aid is totally based on economics. Yet their ACT/SAT/Merit Scholarships have NOT suffered. The average cost to attend Harvard is $6K and Yale $12K roughly. If you are under $120K in family income it's free at both. In fact when you go through the admission process they tell you that getting into those schools is the hardest part of graduating. My child attends a $64k institution with no merit aid at a far cheaper rate than OHIO university offered, and that is with a 36 ACT and 3600 ACT while being a National Merit Scholar at $10k over 4 years. less than $65k a year is free, $65k to $150k is 0%-10% of sticker price and that is with ZERO loans figured in. That is a hell of a deal for the education.

Bottom line is every school offers a unique opportunity and experience for each person. If it was as cut and dried as some think, we'd only need 1 school in each state.

So you clearly are out of touch while you are waiting for your shuttle to the Frisco Bowl.

It really makes me angry when people call Ohio a party school. Every school is a party school. Ohio is THE party school. Get it right.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Alan do you hear it randomly or is there a pattern to it? I think the parents that are gung ho about sending their kids to OU like to party themselves. The mass consumer party household where every last penny is spent on a material good. Beach week every summer and spending work bonuses on SUVs. Its the socially conservative families that are afraid of the big bad OU I'm guessing.

OCF it was primarily in the better suburban schools from 9 to 3 on the 270 clock around Columbus and the better public private and public schools inside 270. Generally the conversation ended with "my mom would never let me go there." Part of that had to do with the reported numbers of sexual assaults. I remember going on campus tours when my daughter was looking at school in 99-00. I was amazed at the number of parents whose first concern was campus security. That was 19 years ago. Imagine what it's like today.

I'd like to, from personal experience, assure all prospective parents that it's possible to go to OU — or any college really — and not party.

Just raise a kid with crippling social anxiety. Problem solved.

In my experience, outside of Ohio no one has even ever heard of the party school reputation of Ohio University. Getting us confused with OSU or Miami is a much bigger problem.

In Ohio, people I've worked or socialized with think of BGSU as the joke party school in Ohio, followed by Kent. Miami and OHIO have the reputation of being "good" party schools, where you certainly had a great time but you also got a great education.
