Not sure why anyone would be surprised by this. Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier. Another swing and miss for this staff. Have to keep them accountable because the swings and misses are adding up. Boals needs to find magic in the portal. I was never convinced that Towns was going to be a 15-20 minute guy. Hope he can put on weight and contribute at his next stop.

On the contrary, Boals seems to be scared and looking for a homerun player. Towns could have been a solid contributor. Boals sub strategy was bizarre at best. Play Towns, Ezuma and Clayton like 4-5 minutes in first half then they often sit the rest of the game. Wouldn't surprise if Ezuma perhaps goes portal. Clayton, not likely.

In terms of recruiting to date Jeff < Saul.

You have to account for DW3 and Schmock who were very good and his ability to re-recruit Carter. Add in Miles, Rod and Sears and sprinkle in Clayton and Boals has done a decent job. This next group will determine his worth.

I hope Boals is honest with players when they have an end of the year sit-down. It's only fair to let each one know where they stand. What they need to work on. What their prospects for playing time and where they fit in overall.

If he does that he isn't necessarily running a kid off. It also isn't hard for a kid to see he's been recruited over.

I wonder how the end-of-season conversation with BRod went...

That's nicer than I'd be. I think I'd just tell him, "This can't and won't happen again next year. Either produce or you'll sit. Get to work."

None of the 4 we have in the portal surprised me in the least.
BVP has to think he’s been in Athens as long as Frank and has probably run out of majors to pursue .
Sears looking for the big payday that would never come about in Athens.
Grainger writing was on the wall when he got completely bypassed for minutes by IJ.
Towns had ample opportunity with our short and weak bench to earn significant playing time but didn’t

It’s just life in the world of college BBall now. Even the biggest of the college blue bloods have kids jumping ship left and right to pursue portal nirvana.

Hell our coach doesn’t even live in Athens and it was widely speculated he was in the portal himself.

The days of Jim Snyder and the 4 year player are definitely a distant memory.

I'll agree regarding Jim Snyder and today's players who see their college s a stepping stone to something supposedly better.

As far as Towns, I'll disagree. Boals substitution strategy was bizarre at best. Play Towns, IJ in the first half then sit them the 2nd half. That certainly instills confidence in the guys. Towns didn't get enough minutes to decide if he is an asset. Roderick got a ton of minutes and ummm .. never mind. Apples to oranges comparison.

p6 coaches won't spend a schollie on a guy in the portal unless they are pretty sure he will contribute to the program. If Sams is really good, he should thus end up at least at Belmont or Butler.... but certainly nothing below Illinois State or Indiana State.

Is that a reasonable hypothesis?

Totally figured this was coming for Towns when his minutes disappeared towards the end of the season.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Yeah I remember that interview as well, wonder if Towns wants to follow him to Bama or Auburn. And that's ok! I'm a 21 year old guy and don't play Fortnite unless if its with friends.

Alabama or Auburn???

Actually there is an NAIA college in Tuscaloosa that needs a 3-point shooter. That was holding them back from winning the NAIA natty. Can Sam hit a three?

Mid70’s I won’t be all that surprised IF Towns doesn’t return he’ll not go to a program above the MAC level. Boals always seemed to me to have him on a short leash and then put him into the witness protection program over the last month of the season for some reason.

What program above MAC level looks at Towns and thinks, yeah... that's our guy? He's a great guy for a smaller D1 program. He does nothing special. I think his exit was more of Boals telling him he could get increased PT elsewhere due to an incoming transfer.

Or D-2 or NAIA.

Brandon Huntley-Hatfield of Tennessee just went into the portal this morning. Not only is he 6-10/235, he was also offered out of h.s. by some schools we have all heard of. Kansas, Auburn, Baylor, UK, Georgetown, Louisville, Wake Forest, etc.

Why would a good d-1 program go after Towns when guys like BH-H are in the portal?

+1 If Towns were a physical specimen, a big school MAY take a chance on him. I don't see him as being a hot commodity.

Agree as well. His potential was there this season but it was weird his minutes eroded as the year went on. Would not be surprised if Boals told him about impending transfer players and to seek PT else where.

We are talking about Sam and not Karl-Anthony, correct? Alabama A&M maybe.

I was never comfortable when Towns was in the game. He just didn't seem to have a way to adjust to the speed of the game. He would come in and when we were uptempo he was just fine but I cringed every time he took a pass on the perimeter. I never felt that way with Clayton, Ezuma or even Adelodun. I felt like they were able to flow into the game. I really hope Boals is able to take those three and do something with them. Towns was someone that was a raw work-in-progress who never progressed. I would like to see at least two of Ezuma, Clayton or Adelodun take a big step next year and join the rotation of EJ, AJB, Miles, Rod, DW3 and whatever transfers we get. I am not at this point expecting Hadaway, Sheldon or Frazier/Estis to do much but hope to be surprised like I was when Clayton started playing.

Bama A&M has a nice suburban-ish campus on the highway going north out of Huntsville which is a really good city anyway. If he's looking for a more "urban" HBCU than that, TSU is close to downtown Nashville. Brian "Penny" Collins is a good coach that just needs more time to turn that one around.
