Just guessing, but I think GoCats could have something to do with this.

I'm assuming this has to do with who Ohio has beaten and who in turn, they have beaten?

At the start of the season, the land of every county in the US belongs to the D1 school that’s closest to that county. When games are played, the winning team gains control of the land belonging to the losing school if the losing school has any land at that time. Rinse and repeat all season. So KU owns the most land currently, including Athens county it appears. Next time KU loses, all of their land will belong to the team that beat them. Next time we lose, our land goes to the team that beats us. Our win over Buffalo got us our current land. The idea is that the national champion will own all land, except I think last year, someone with an APR probation ended with some land. It means nothing and is just for fun.

Perhaps, the true answer to this goes even deeper as follows: http://appalachianmagazine.com/2018/02/03/how-appalachia-... /

We could use more BA representation on the college football and basketball boards on reddit. It's like me, OhioUPilot, and a few stragglers.

Nobody is going to be able to wrestle Lake Michigan away from Kentucky.

Here is how last year's ended up. https://www.reddit.com/r/CollegeBasketball/comments/bb3g6... /

Why it's not all Virginia is because Troy and Cornell had land at the end of their regular season, but did not qualify for their conference tournaments. Cornell accepted an invitation to the CIT, so their land changed hands up until Marshall won that tournament.
