What's the point of crappy beer with no alcohol?

So The City of Athens is "rural"? Also, Athens is the exception to the rule from what I've seen. They have several cab companies, and Lyft, because there is demand. Would you find a Lyft driver easily in McArthur? Or Pomeroy? I don't know, and I'd be interested to know, but I have doubts.

I'll tell you one thing, you're wrong about them being available in "many rural areas". I'm from west central Ohio, were pre-Uber/Lyft, cabs were never an option except in Lima. And the multitude of 1-2 stoplight farm towns have lots of two things per capita: bars and churches. Most of them don't have people using Uber or Lyft, and most of them have farmers that can't just walk home from the bar. Lastly, I'm not shy to admit after 2-3 happy hour pops right after work, I'd probably drive home.

I'm not going to get into a silly argument about what is rural and what is not. Athens County is rural yet these ride share apps along with delivery apps are now available in this area and others. Really no excuse to get behind the wheel under the influence but I guess that's the chance some people will consciously decide to make. Seems like a selfish decision to me to endanger the lives of others.

Two Miller Lite's, or two Razz wheat's at happy hour does not make some people, including myself, "under the influence". Others it would, and it's entirely dependent on each individual person.

You can call the "rural" thing a silly argument, but the point is legitimate in many places where there are few options if a person wants to travel a little to go out, have a couple beers or glasses of wine with dinner, and then meet your definition of being selfish or responsible. Maybe you need to get out of the city once in awhile. ;)

Based on your replies here, you're probably also afraid or unwilling to go even 67 in 65mph zone on the freeway.

No, I'm mostly 9 miles over the speed limit and more if Waze is showing clear roads.

There is no Uber on the island of Hawai'i.

Lol. Waze is something fantastic we can agree on, though I've found that the farther from a city and/or Interstate Highway you get, the less reliable it seems to be. Plus side is that we all pretty much know the speedtrap spots on 33 from Cbus to Athens, and you can almost always count on seeing 2-3 of them from Lancaster to Nelsonville.

Not sure how much traveling you have done but Waze has been amazing in my travels. It's directed me off of I-26 in South Carolina to detour onto county roads to avoid an accident. Ended up getting me close to my final destination with minimal lost time.

We use the combo of Waze and Google Maps on long trips for that reason alone. Whoever isn't driving looks ahead for log jams on the highways. We had one trip back from S.Carolina that doing so saved us maybe two hours because of a fatality accident just south of the I-95/I-26 interchange. It's a must in my opinion. I also use it every time I go through Charlotte. I've had to invent detours half a dozen times. Lastly, I look at it nearly every night right before I leave work to see which way is the least backed up.

And when I say Waze is less reliable in rural areas, I'm referring to the blue dots on the app being less accurate. ;)

Looks like Little Fish recently collaborated with Yellow Springs Brewery on a...lager. Anyone had a chance to try it out? I’m overdue for a visit to Yellow Springs.

Yellow Springs makes nice beer. I always enjoy that town and tasting their stuff at Ohio Brew Week. I haven't tried this one but suspect it's good.

To get back to the debate on styles, at the risk of sounding like a politician, no one is really wrong. You like what you like and there is something for everyone. A few notes on the local breweries, in my nominally educated opinion...

All three Athens breweries are good, and they all do certain things well above average. Whether you like them or not speaks more to personal preference than anything else. That's because they all approach brewing with a different philosophy, as evidenced by their flagship beers.

The biggest seller at Jackie O's is Mystic Mama, a west coast IPA. They are big enough to make a lot of different styles though, and they make something for everyone. Their barrel-aged program is excellent. They don't make many lagers, but Ricky is an ale that drinks like a light lager with the low ABV and IBU to go along with it.

Little Fish's flagship is Saison du Poisson. A flagship saison is really, really, really rare. Saisons are funky, farmhouse styles that don't appeal to everyone. The taste delivers a bit of barnyard, which some people love but others hate. Little Fish does funky stuff really well. This includes an array of sours, coolship-made beers and Belgian styles. But they are not a one-trick pony. They make a really great stout and their pilsener is tasty when available.

Devil's Kettle has Spider Silk as its flagship. An easy drinking beer, it's also unusual as a flagship because it's an imperial blonde that packs 7% - deceptively smooth. But it fits with the philosophy there, as it's a classic European style. Cameron does all kinds of lagers really, really well. All kinds of awesome European brews executed true to style.

As to the debate on which is better, that's up to you. They all know how to make beer well, but each may be your favorite for a different reason. It says nothing about their talent as brewers. Put another way, you can't say Jacques Pepin sucks at cooking just because you don't like French food.

One last note on lagers. In a way, they are harder to make than ales. Big macros are mostly lagers and they have it down to a literal factory science. But for small breweries, lagers can be tricky for two big reasons. First and foremost, they take more time -- lager roughly means "to store" in German. They need temperature-controlled time to mature - as much as two months. And lager yeast is fussy - if the temperature is not right, it will result in off flavors. Some ales can be made and served in a couple of weeks, and ale yeast is not that sensitive to temperature. So less time, more ease and less requirement of specialized equipment for ale. Ale yeast also makes it easier to hide "off" flavors, and there is much less room for error with lagers. Throw in the public perception that lagers = crappy macros, and craft brewers have little incentive to make lagers. That's changing, but slowly.

I follow both breweries via social media, and Yellow Springs has been doing some kind of construction around their bar facility. I've been waiting to hear that they're done to pay them another visit. They have a good little spot in a cool little town.

They are doing significant expansion as they cannot keep up with demand. They actually stopped distribution to Columbus and statewide last summer until the expansion is complete.

A bit off-topic but still on point, sort of. Have any of you, especially the NE Ohioans, tried the Great Lakes Center Cut Lager that Heinen’s has had on display? Very smooth.

It's a great week to be in Athens. Lots of events. I'll be there this weekend because my wife is both competing and judging in the homebrew competition. If anyone's thinking of checking it out, it's well worth it and you can see a whole schedule of events and who's serving what beers here: https://ohiobrewweek.com /

Awesome weekend in Atown despite the brutal heat. Such an awesome experience every year. Already planning to make it back down for Boogie on the Bricks in August.

A bit O.T.,but tomorrow is Christmas in July.

Don't know about Ohio, but its pretty big deal out here in N.J.

A lot of the bars have Christmas drink specials.
Red and Green jello shots are very popular.

My wife and I always save a couple of bottles of Christmas Ale and Mad Elf
for the occasion.

Troegs make a summer version of Mad Elf (Naked Elf) which is great.
But you can only get it on tap at their brewery.

Merry Christmas in July.

Mad Elf is one of the only holiday beers I like. I'll have to check out Naked Elf. Thanks for the tip!

Two "problems" with Naked Elf:

1.You have to drive to their brewery in Hershey to get it.

2.It sells out FAST

Christmas in July isn’t unique to Jersey. It occurs pretty much everywhere.

Didn't say it was.

I just said I didn't know how big a deal it was in Ohio.

I know my friends in Wisconsin and Florida said its not really anything where they are.

Looking at my feeds, I’ve got friends in Milwaukee and Jacksonville celebrating Christmas in July.

Anyways, I might join Little Fish’s membership program. Pretty good value - https://squareup.com/market/little-fish-brewing-company/i...

In Independence, Ohio, at the National Encampment of the Sons of Union Veterans. Went to dinner at the Winking Lizard. Happy to report that they had Jackie O's Ricky on the beer list. The wife and I ordered same. Very good and delicious after a long drive from Athens.

Yep, Jackie O's is a widely distributed beer in the state of Ohio so I'm not surprised that you would find them at a multi location restaurant like Winking Lizard.
