This game reminds me of the 2001 season. We started out with a 29-31 loss to Akron in Athens, then went to Morgantown and lost 3-20 to WVU and it was downhill from there for the next 4 years. Interesting to note that the HC during that tenure lasted a total of 4 years and was an assistant who was promoted after the previous HC moved on. Of course I am talking about Brian Knorr. I have a feeling we are going to experience the same thing again these next 4 years. Sad!

First time since November 22, 2016 that we scored fewer than ten pts in a game, a streak of 44 straight games. The last time was a 9-3 win over Akron that clinched the East Division title for Ohio.

We will get by.
We will get by.

Hated not going for it on fourth on the first drive, then soon after the muffed kickoff and safety. All energy vacuum packed out of the stadium in that moment.

Hated to waste that large, rowdy, antagonizing student crowd that 90% stayed after halftime when the team didn't show them much at any point.

Hated that the Geico Dance Cam was just clips from The Office and Napoleon Dynamite.

I'm not seeing it this year. I don't see one true difference maker in the skill positions or anywhere in the front seven.

I will say again, Ohio currently doesn’t have a video department. I’m relatively sure it’s more than likely a bunch of students flying solo right now, so bare with them just a little.

A couple of quick points. We are assuming that Syracuse is the bottom feeders that most of the football pundits saw from last year. We better hope that the conventional wisdom is wrong and Coach Dino Babers has a sleeper team on his hands. Secondly, in another thread on the Big 12 expansion, some posters were wondering if the American Conference would poach some MAC teams to add to their stable. After tonight's performance, I am going to go out on a limb and assume that an invite will not be extended to us.

I loved that someone finally hired him into the D1 college ranks. Their opponent today almost certainly contributed to the beatdown (84 points was it? I saw that the QB set the record with 10 TD passes in the game), but I love someone just taking a different approach to the conventional wisdom (and it working)

Not a great performance, but it's week one and they played just 3 games last year. Clearly some rust with special teams. Now can the coaching staff clean that up.

My high school had to play PA every couple of years (for our division we were kind of a power house for a minute) and that was always the one game everyone worried about because PA “recruited.”

Very unconventional. I mean if you think about it the only time it super backfires is if you’re pinned in your red zone, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him punt in situations like that.

I kinda equate it to Bob recruiting shooters and not bigs. 3 > 2. Just a different philosophy.

I recall an interview with him (want to say it was on a PAPN podcast) and he confirmed that his "no punt" policy excluded being DEEP in his own territory (and frequently when his team was up big).

Instead of audibling out of the run UTM, he went ahead with it. Got maybe a yard.

The one saving grace for the next three games is that both Louisiana and NWern looked lousy too.

Honestly the offense didn’t click too bad when he was out there. The announcers kept saying that ball he threw to Buckner (I think) was under thrown, but it looked like it was placed exactly where it needed to be. As someone who wasn’t around and hasn’t seen much of the Tett era, how did they do with him in this run heavy system? I’ve seen some clips of him running, but knowing how we thrived being run/option heavy with Nathan, I can’t see how a pure pocket QB is doing us any favors right now. If you’re not going to adapt the offense to your tools, why recruit tools that don’t work?

Now that I have slept on last nights game I have a few observations;

THE POSITIVES;
1) We suffered NO penalties.....
2) Rourke passed at a 75% completion rate.....
3) We may have found a good kicker.....

THE NEGATIVES;
1) Could not finish drives.....
2) Could not force any turnovers.....

Notes;
1) What was Coach saying to Armani after his abrupt removal from the game.....
2) Say what you want Syracuse is still a P5 team despite last years record.....

Summary;
We must force turnovers if we are going to be a good team with a record to be proud of.....
How many starters were missing from this game.....

More like gallows humor. Even in a desperation move, the only schools the American conference would look at from the MAC would be those big enough to be located in metro areas that have local TV stations i.e. Buffalo, Toledo and Northern Illinois.

Armani missed a wide open receiver that could have been a TD.

Got some push from the O/line.

D-line got manhandled and Daxon in for about one series and no tackles.

We missed Cox at WR.

I know I’ll get some flak for this but I think we should have used Armani more.

Syracuse enjoyed calling us the Boobercats and Just Ohio.

We need a better red zone plan.

Starting from within the 20 yard line more than once kinda screws up your O.

If we can have some kind of D-line I think we will be OK…with some sacks and push.

No flak here on the Armani take. I was at A-State when Anderson came in got Adam Kennedy from Utah State in the portal. Anderson’s philosophy was run heavy, option, fast as possible. Adam wasn’t very fast. We had a backup QB (who went on to do great things once they let him start) that was fast and we’d bring him in only to run the ball. Defeated the purpose because the defense knew exactly what was coming. Kurtis is a great guy, but in terms of us being run heavy and option based as well, Armani (or CJ) just fits the scheme better. I liked Kurtis waiting for one of the Luehrman’s to get the block on the one option run he had that I remember, but not having any speed kills the play and it got maybe a yard? You either have to adjust based on your weapons, or put in people that fit what you want to run, and I don’t see that happening.

Next week Syracuse has Rutgers at home.

Rutgers destroyed Temple yesterday.

Game should be a barometer for both teams.

We have a surprisingly limited number of offensive threats:

1. Rourke seems like a nice kid but has feet of clay. This is never going to change. I'm OK with Harris getting some looks in the next couple of weeks.

2. Tuggle seemed hesitant, slow to the hole in a number of cases. His error on the kickoff was a killer and simply unacceptable for a seasoned player.

3. The Tuggle run play resulting in a safety...slow to develop and just horrible. Everyone knew what we were going to do.

4. 50-yard field goal attempt was silly. Force them to work with their backs to the goal line. Their average drive starting position had to be the 30 yard line or better.

4. We need to stretch the field much more. Seems like our O coordinator has little confidence in his quarterbacks.

5. We use way too much time prior to each snap. Kills momentum. Lets the D adjust to our formations.

6. Really poor kick coverage. Lots of over-pursuit resulting in decent returns.

7. Someone PLEASE get Tim Albin some media training.

Overall very disappointing evening. As for the gameday experience, I'll share my complaints in another thread.

Gameday experience? I had a great experience. Music was fantastic, every staff member I interacted with was courteous, and the restrooms were clean. Concession lines were long, but what can you do. Despite the poor play on the field, I went home a happy Rabbi.

Rabbi, I'm glad a man of the cloth went home happy. However, we need to figure out how to put points on the board not cater to the bleacher creatures. I'd rather go home with a win in my belly than a cold beer. But I guess beggars can't be choosers so I drove home with a belly full of Budweiser.

That had a chance to be a statement game and apparently the statement is we're not ready to run with big dogs (haven't used that expression in a while). We probably saved Babers's job at least til November.

I thought we'd see more variety from the offense after the throwback to Kurtis but that was it for the night. Disappointing. I know Albins's favorite flavor is vanilla bur will somebody please slip him some tutti frutti this week?

It's hard to compare teams after one game but we're probably bottom 2/3 of the East right now. Hard to tell what Buffalo's actually like and Kent moved the ball against a good Tx A&M team and was still in the game midway through the 3rd quarter. The rest of the division looked pretty awful this week.

I imagine our defense should be enough to beat Duquesne but this needs to be the week to heal the offense. We don't want to be a Tulsa, UConn or Washington, and we certainly don't want to head to Lafayette and Evanston with the same offense we had last night.

Early 4th ... down 16. Kick field goal.

Sigh.

That sums up the opener of the Albin era for me.

Just a giant sigh.

Wildly underwhelming performance in a very winnable game.

Could be a long season(s)

The kick return game yesterday continued a trend that has been evident for years! (5? 10? Feels like at least 10 years): we would be (FAR) better off taking a fair catch on EVERY kickoff to trying to return them. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but even without the safety (which ultimately resulted from a botched catch, so couldn’t have been alleviated by fair catch) we seem to leave so many yards on the table by attempting returns. Seems like the best case is that we get out to the 27-30 yard line…when we don’t fumble and don’t get called for holding/block in the back and backed up to the 12 yard line

I was there and all I can say is YIKES!

Albin's play calling and the two mistakes early (Tuggle and the safety) buried us. We never had a chance once Cuse scored that easy TD. Albin had us playing afraid and boy did it show. We could have used a DII opponent to smash to ease in the Albin era and get Rourke's feet wet.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!
