What are you referring to, specifically? In my opinion, most of these items are relatively minor, ho hum. A couple of the items are cause for concern, but the sources appear to be weak. The most damning accusation comes from two (are they the same?) anonymous sources.

The following seem pretty troubling to me:

Quote:

“The hazing was very much about breaking them mentally,” Tarosky said in the report. “They would lock them in a room and interrogate them for hours until they broke down. They would lock them in a basement for days and make them listen to the same song for hours or just have them sit there blindfolded.”

Quote:

One of his roommates, a new member of Lambda Chi Alpha, recalled having to participate in “Hell Week,” which occurred the week prior to initiation. According to the report, new members were “secluded to the basement for the entire week and not allowed to bathe, sleep at home, do homework or go anywhere else other than class.”

On Oct. 7, Dean of Students Jenny Hall-Jones received a redacted email congratulating Hall-Jones and her staff for their decision of suspending fraternity life at OU. The redacted email mentioned a student, who was no longer a member of the fraternity, but was hazed.

“He was hazed, kept in a damp basement, drank to excess, and had his phone taken for 1 week,” the report said.

Quote:

In a redacted general conduct report, the person reporting said Pi Kappa Phi revealed their Big/Little pairings by making pledges chug a big bottle of Smirnoff Ice. They didn’t have to finish the bottle because their bigs finished them for them.

Quote:

A woman said in an anonymous general conduct report that her hazing experience in Delta Zeta as a freshman resulted in multiple broken bones as well as depression and bullying.

Quote:

In a redacted general conduct report by an OU Greek Alumnae, the respondent said that Pi Beta Phi has girls “sit on dryers nearly naked and circles fat in sharpie marker,” according to the report.

If you're the University, how can you justify that behavior? And more to the point, what purpose does it serve? It puts the physical and/or mental well-being of students at risk for no real reason at all.

Also, I was bullied when, as a 19 year-old, I mispronounced chasm on the air and was berated for it.

Me too! The upperclassmen got all over me for various mispronunciations, since there were several Southeastern Ohio dialect pronunciations that had crept into my vocabulary. For instance, I tended to say "jist" instead "just." I remember the time a senior almost jumped through the control room window when I said "Mos-cow" instead of "Mos-co." "There are no cows in Moscow," I was told, in no uncertain terms. Then there was my problem in correctly pronouncing the call letters of the station. I had to learn to say "Double U" for "W," rather than pronounce that letter the way my high school buddies said it. None of my "radio station hazing" was done taking my feelings into account. I was yelled at, swore at, berated in front of my peers, and made to feel like the miserable snot-nosed freshman that I was. I wonder if it's too late, finnOhio, for the two of us to launch a hazing complaint against WOUB! :-)

Pi Kappa Phi iced its pledges. (But they didn't make them finish it, as their "bigs" finished it for them.)

This can't be considered a serious problem unless we attack the entire student body for "icing."

Oh, actually, sorry -- I somehow missed the "Ice." I thought they were being asked to chug vodka.

That changes things. Apologies.

As I posted, this sounds like what my room mate went through when he pledged.

The pledges also had to complete various tasks and competitions to get food and drinks.

They also had the actives "shadow" them, to make sure the actually went to class and didn't sneak off to grab a meal or a nap.

The pledges did come up with all kinds of creative ways to get people sneak them
food and drinks.

I will say this, when my room mate came back to the dorm after Hell Week,he was "ripe".

Anyone that would put up with that kind of treatment is self loathing, IMO.

Yes, put in the complaint. Just do it anonymously....

Double U, eh? I hated that sound when announcers said the call letters in Cleveland of 3WE; it was three consecutive Double U's and an E.

And when you were a freshman basketball player at OU, what sort of stuff did you have to put up with? Last on the bus, pick up the balls, defer to serniors, etc.? Just curious not being accusatory.

“It makes me a little uneasy knowing that there have been so many incidents recently so I just wanted to speak out.”

Sounds to me like the administration needs a cease and desist on sending cease and desist letters for make this student feel uneasy and be peer pressured into speaking out.

Did grammar send you a cease and desist?

The administration’s poor handling of this situation has caused severe anxiety for me. I will be filing a civil suit against the University seeking damages. I’m unable to sleep and type coherent sentences. Will use posts here as proof in filing. You may be asked to testify

I've seen crazier things happen.

I'm sorry for not considering how triggering all of this must have been for you. I've put myself in your shoes, and I totally get it now. Happy to testify.

I mean, it's downright scary. Here you are, a 48 year old dude who has had no formal relationship with Ohio University for two and a half decades, and for some reason, they didn't keep you apprised of the specifics of this situation in real time? Or even consider your feelings at all. I mean, they did this right before homecoming! There's nothing you look forward to more every year than that Saturday morning, when you knock on the door of your old frat house and stand in the foyer making awkward small talk with whichever hungover 19 year old drew the short straw and had to answer the door. He loves your stories of the old days. And you love sharing them. Is life even worth living if you don't get to exchange idle chit chat with a 19 year old who doesn't want to be talking to you?

And this goddamned administration stole that from you with their PC, Woke regard for student safety and desire not to be held liable in the event of a second wrongful death. Ugh. Cancel culture. LGBTQ. TikTok. Where does it end?

I feel for you, man. Let me know how I can help. Always available to talk.

Nope. Let me guess, since you can't argue with the validity of my opinion, you've decided to pivot to arguing that I shouldn't have one.

Always the hallmark of any logically sound argument.
