Interesting that it took this long for him to enter the portal. I, for one, hope he returns here. I think he could be productive for us.

+1. He played awesome defense and was a great rebounder.

This one surprises me 2nd least, behind Granger. Towns was getting some run, his minutes seemed to vanish towards the end of the season.

I'm not saying this is something with deep significance, merely an observation, but I noticed this at women's hoops games this past year. Usually a lot of the men's team was there, sitting together. Towns was there a lot, but he didn't sit with the other guys. Like I said, just an observation. It struck me as odd.

There are (I'm going to guess) 1500 names in the portal.

Maybe 10% have decided on a new destination?

Sam is probably a great guy but this is a chance for Boals to do some shopping. There are some p5 guys who have been recruited over who might do great at a "mid." Take E.J. Anosike for example. Transferred from Holy Cross (?) to Tennessee and barely played. Transferred to Cal State Fullerton and averaged 16ppg and made at least one nationally televised NCAA all-star game.

The next Anosike is out there. Several of them. Hundreds perhaps.

He showed a lot of promise this year. I was hoping to see him back next year.

Boals is after some big names so far in the portal. Going to be interesting how this all shakes out.

I've seen crazier things happen.

This surprises me a little, unless Boals is encouraging him to move on. Which, I don't know, are we really already throwing him away? Sam has potential but it hasn't been met just yet. The program is invested in his success, but based on his resume, what other program would take the chance? I just don't see how any place else would be a better spot.

Yeah, it’s odd. I hope he comes back but completely understand if he departs.

Two words losing value are "awesome" and "great" when used fast and loose like this.

I see this as another opportunity for Boals to upgrade the roster.

Is there a link somewhere that has this info, or did you learn it elsewhere?

There are obviously some VERY tough conversations going on in the Convo coaching offices.

I think back in BP (Before Portal) times, Boals and staff would be well invested in a project like Towns but the sheer number of players in the portal has shifted the mindset of player development.

Its literally every man for themselves now a days. Every single player/staff member from the starting 5 down to the GA's are thinking of ways to move up and take advantage of the new norm in college hoops.

This isn't exactly new but NIL and portal has essentially opened the flood gates.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised by this. Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier. Another swing and miss for this staff. Have to keep them accountable because the swings and misses are adding up. Boals needs to find magic in the portal. I was never convinced that Towns was going to be a 15-20 minute guy. Hope he can put on weight and contribute at his next stop.

Lots of hyperbole in these pages. From one of our poster, AJ Clayton is a "home run" recruit for the Bobcats. From another poster, Towns is an "awesome" defender and a "great" rebounder. And these are two players that saw limited minutes.

Makes me wonder why we don't dominate the 20th best conference in the country.

Yeah, I wouldn't call someone a "great rebounder" who only averaged 2.5 boards and played only 10 mins a game. What I will say about Towns is that he has nice length and decent athleticism (which is what we really need) but was out of control at times.

We all saw this coming with Towns and Granger and it's not a knock on either of them, just a matter of the situation. Oh and remember when someone posted that speculating about who will transfer is "douche-baggy"? well, we weren't wrong. LOL

Clayton does have impressive potential. Not in the Jabari Smith or Paolo Banchero way, but in the pretty good for a guy who was 17 years old kind of way.

Towns shot 16% from three and 12% the season before. 50% at the FT line and 35% the season before. 2 ppg this season and 1 ppg average the season before. I'm sure he's a great kid, but if he's really awesome and dominating on the court, he should end up at Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, Baylor... In reality, he might be lucky to land at a D-1 newcomer like North Alabama.

The other thing is Sam is three years removed from high school. He did a prep year, remember? So he may just be who he is at this point.

Remember the kid that looked like Jesus? He transferred to a D-2 school and didn't get to play there either that any of us ever heard of. It happens. Hopefully they stay in school to get a degree while being the first guy picked in intramurals.

I hope Boals is honest with players when they have an end of the year sit-down. It's only fair to let each one know where they stand. What they need to work on. What their prospects for playing time and where they fit in overall.

If he does that he isn't necessarily running a kid off. It also isn't hard for a kid to see he's been recruited over.

Not a big surprise. A little more so with BVP and JC giving openings to Bobcat bigs. .

That said best wishes Sam.

From an older Mark Sears interview , I remember Mark talking about how he and Sam would play Fortnite* quite a bit together… Doesn’t help when one of your buddies leaves.

Good luck Sam and I hope things work out for you!

Go Bobcats!

*Yes, I’m a 53 year old man that plays Fortnite. I like to think it keeps my mind limber…

Yeah I remember that interview as well, wonder if Towns wants to follow him to Bama or Auburn. And that's ok! I'm a 21 year old guy and don't play Fortnite unless if its with friends.
