Very enjoyable watch, they reminded me of me and my wife when it comes to budgeting and projects. I always want cheap and easy and she is top of the line and a project dreamer.

I have to say though, anyone else surprised by the budget? Basically she wanted 350k and he wanted 250k and they ended up buying a house for 239k. In the discussion he said "do you want to ever be able to take a vacation?" He made 550k each of the past 5 years. He made 175k at NDSU prior to that. I didn't see what his new contract is, but would guess it is still over 100k.

On one hand, I commend them for being modest. On the other, I would think they could write a check for a 500k house.

I was thinking the same thing.

I don't know them personally, but they seem like good people. Hopefully things work out for them at Northern St.

Were there any moments when Saul said,"Gee, honey, marble counter tops would be great if Jason Carter hadn't broken his foot" or "Maybe if we weren't pathetic from the charity stripe or played some zone D at Ohio we could afford that extra bathroom?"

I wonder how much "reality" there is in "house hunters".

I know most reality shows don't have much.

I used to enjoy some the "Beachfront Bargain Hunt" episodes.

Its similar to HH.
You look at 3 houses then decide.

Then I found out that,to be on the show you had to have already bought
the house you end up selecting the house on the show.

Ruined the show for me.

In this case,I don't car,real or not.

It was a fun episode and they are nice people.

Honestly, to see anyone purchase a home that is closer to the realm of what a typical person might be able to afford on of those shows is nice. I honestly can't stand watching them most of the time because I cannot even begin to relate to the people and their budgets.

FWIW, there’s not a whole lot. My wife and I went to the Faroe Islands on vacation a few years ago. In an odd coincidence, there was a “Hourse Hunters International” with a Faroe woman and American man looking for a house in the capital of Torshavn. We remembered it because we had booked our trip. They found their house and the husband ended up working the front desk of a hotel. We joked that he’d check us in. The Faroes are tiny and lo and behold, he did check us in. He worked the bar on some evenings and we chatted him up. He said the only accurate part was that they moved from Michigan to the Faroes. They’d already gotten a place before being on the show and just had to fake their way through the hard choice of pretending to look at two others. I’m guessing most episodes are similar if not even faker.

Then what's the point for Saul and wife aside from attracting attention?

For fun? He clearly enjoys TV and it’s not like his wife is a shrinking violet - she was a beauty queen. I don’t see why their choice to appear on it is worthy of a critique.

Have said it before and will say it again....for someone who is not shy with putting his family in the spotlight...I don't understand why Saul ball never used social media as a positive tool for his basketball program when he was coaching at Ohio.

Self promotion is his wife's thing, not his. If you read about her upbringing, there's a real need for validation.
Promoting Saul's team wouldn't enhance her "brand."

You're probably right about the dollar values, but consider a couple angles: One, they also bought a house somewhere around Hocking Hills at one time. Whether they still own it, I don't know. Besides that, maybe the producers are trying to show homes in ranges that normal people buy? (not close to $1mil?)

Another thought - maybe they're just being really conservative and want to retire young? I know I'd be trying to do that if I was making 500k a year.

That said, if I were them, I would have bought the house in the country and built the basketball court and a 'man shed' to watch film that could have an indoor half court. ;)

Besides your poignant thoughts, it can't possibly hurt her brand to be seen on this show.

It really is an odd thing looking back on it. Seems like his personality would potentially fit using Twitter more. That said, Twitter can have a really dark side to it. Maybe he's just choosing not to be part of that, which is absolutely understandable.

My understanding is this is par for the course. My wife used to watch the show years ago, and it was one based around NE Ohio (Kent State has had a couple incoming admins on it), and we looked up the level of reality as well. Turned out one of the houses they used as a decoy was actually the realtors, so the filming had the awkward part of criticizing their realtors’ house for the sake of making TV.
