Let's face it, Sears struggled to the point of practically being a non-factor against the top 3-4 teams in the MAC. Granted, he will probably not be the focal point defensively at Alabama that he was for the Bobcats, but on the other hand he will be guarded, 1-on-1, by better players/athletes in the SEC.

Certainly believe he can be a player on that level ... but doubt he will be a difference-maker beyond a game or two.

One thing he does that probably caught Bama's eye is get to the FT line. He had eight games with 10+ FT attempts this season, including a season=high 14 of 19 vs Rice. In six of the eight he made 10+ FTs, and went 10 for 10 four times. He may have trouble from the field against the taller, more athletic teams in the SEC -- from the field he was 2 for 11 vs UK and 4 for 18 vs LSU -- but if he can get to the line a lot he could be a contributor. He had double figures against both UK and LSU, although I don't expect him to get 35+ minutes at Bama like he did in those two games.

Yes, I could see him playing that role. Put in at the end of a game as the hall handler who will be fouled by the other team that’s trying to catch up.

Truly baffling to me that this board simultaneously seems to view a first team all MAC, 20 PPG scorer as a "end of game ballhandler to take foul shots" in the SEC and also has threads titled "Don't tell me Ohio can't ever make the Final Four."

If our best player's just an end of game ballhandler in the SEC, we're not making a final four.

Relax, Francis.

The way I read that makes perfect sense. Play him at the end of games with leads to handle the ball and go to the line with your 90% rate when the other team is fouling. Not limited, however, to minutes at the end of games.

The use of "put in at end of games" confused me. I would assume, were Sears playing already, the way you'd put that would be more like "try and get him the ball in foul situations" or whatever.

But, either way, very sorry to rile you up, and also sorry about the fact that I am somehow living in your head to the point that you referred to me preemptively in a previous post even though I have no idea who you are and remember nothing about anything you've ever posted here before.

There's a non-zero probability that we make the Final Four and Mark Sears makes free throws at the end of SEC games.

I've seen crazier things happen.

In fairness, I think there are like 25 active BA posters, not hundreds.

And a healthy percentage of them have spent the last week or so discussing Mark Sears' shortcomings and how they'll be exposed in the SEC.

So while I quoted an erratic, hypocritical person I thought his views were representative of a sentiment that's taken shape.

The current layout of transfer rules puts Ohio's chances of a final 4 closer to 0% than it does 1%.

Making a NCAA tournament run for a mid-major used to be like catching lightning a bottle. Now I would argue its more like catching lightning by bare hand.

Great call, classmate of Monroe. Now, what do you see in the future in terms of DW3 and BVP?

Forgive me if this was already discussed. This thread is a zillion pages now.

Alabama signed the Top PG in the 2022 class -- Jaden Bradley...
2nd leading scorer, guard Jahvon Quinerly possibly returns...
4th leading scorer, guard JD Davison also possibly returns...
Texas Tech transfer guard Nimari Burnett missed last season due to injury so he'll be in the fold as well...

Needless to say there is no lack of competition. I guess it remains to be seen how much PT Sears will get. I don't think an SEC team can afford to put a 6ft "PG" at the SG position. Also I guess there is chatter about Quinerly and Davison possibly testing the NBA waters.

Rooting for him but also salty about it. That's the transfer portal life.

I'm just being pragmatic about it. His two outings vs SEC teams this past season weren't promising. He did break double figures in each game but his output was way down. Would've been a lot less if he didn't have 35+ minutes, which he probably won't get. And his shooting percentage from the field was awful, about 21%. Lots of guys seek greener pastures but wind up with stinkweed.

If he's looking for a better shot at the NCAA tourney and the NBA, I hope he gets it. If he's just looking to rake in more NIL cash, good riddance.

Some of these quotes are quite amazing......

"Draw fouls underneath." Really...how consistent was he in doing that? How many shots did he get blocked under the hoop? Remember, he's 6 foot.

"Play with pace." Don't remember a ton of coast-to-cast drives and dishing for assists.

"Makes the reads Jason Preston made." Huh....please don't ever mention Mark Sears and Jason Preston in the same sentence when it comes to making reads and decision making.

Seems like Mark's head has expanded to another level. His exit strategy with his AAU coach was odd. No goodbye on social media to teammates or coaches or a thank you to Ohio.

Alabama fans are going to soon learn he's a 6-foot shooting guard...not a point guard. He can shoot the three and make free throws. I will give him that.

But a facilitator and a leader? That was Jason Preston. Not Mark Sears.

I'll come back next April and eat my words if I'm wrong about Sears excelling at the SEC level.

I would love for Mark to send me a highlight video of all his "pick and roll reads" and "kickouts" THIS YEAR! Dude was a way better facilitator his freshman year and last year decided he was the man. You are right -- he is a six foot shooting guard. If he finishes his career at Bama I will be shocked.

Sears is an good finisher in the paint for a guard, draws fouls well and is of course an elite free throw shooter. He also is more than serviceable outside shooter, and a solid defender. All these things are skills that can play in the SEC.

As others said...the "quarterbacking" part of the job needs work and didn't even play great in the MAC. It is definitely odd that Oats chose to mention that above all else. Maybe it is like advertising where companies advertise what they know they're NOT good at to change the perception.

Could be Oates's way of justifying signing yet ANOTHER shooter. A big part of "quarterbacking" is making the pass that leads to a bucket, so assists are a good indication of a "quarterback." Sears certainly isn't a JP. Sears went from 3.3 assists per game his frosh year to 4.1 last season. JP had 3.4 his first year, 7.4 his second and 7.3 his third. I realize that in order to get an assist the other guy has to make the bucket, but JP's numbers were just plain overwhelming. If Bama fans are expecting that kind of level from Sears, they're likely to be disappointed. Bama might have better shooters than Ohio, but game in and game out they'll also face better competition.

I think he was playing to up his stats to get ready for the transfer. He really didn't care that much about wining. He often passed up a clear pass to an open player and instead got blocked on an insider move, especially against the better teams in the MAC. I'm not going to miss him at all.

He’ll be basking in NIL money and getting ready to be a first-round draft pick after he takes Alabama to the Final Four. He won’t have any time to remember Athens, let alone a fan like me. He ain’t no Jason Preston. You’ll win BTC’s famous chicken dinner if he ever comes back to an Ohio game like Jason did last year.

Bottom line with Sears is that he struggled mightily against just about every quality opponent on our schedule last year. His stats were inflated at times with how he played in the last five minutes of games when we were already out of it.

I don’t see this translating very well in the SEC, but I guess we shall see.

My sense is that he's a very good basketball player, but that he struggles against length. No argument there.

I just find the rush by so many to paint his decision to transfer as some moral failing to be weird. Immediately we decided he's greedy, doesn't care about winning, and in one case, insulted the dude's Mom. Says way more about the posters than it does about Sears.

From my perspective, he's a competitive dude who wants to play at as high a level as possible. It's hard to be that competitive and successful without being supremely confident -- irrationally so, sometimes. I wish him the best, and hope he does bring Bama to the Final Four, though I suspect he's something closer to replacement level in the SEC.

Either way, best wishes and thanks for two good seasons. Even though we lost, he was the only thing that kept us in that Creighton game. That's when I knew he'd be very good. Preston didn't show and Sears' 8 points off the bench gave us a little jolt and almost turned the momentum. He plays hard and fights. Hard not to respect a guy like that, even if it's a narrative violation around here for folks' whose feelings have been hurt by his transfer.
