Thanks, Joe, for all that detail on tie-breakers and the pandemic rule. It's enough to make my head spin.

Didn't I hear Marty say on the broadcast that the decision to play Guice was made in consultation with her family? That made it sound like she didn't really want to stay around for six years and wants her eligibility to end when she would be targeted for graduation. Doesn't sound all that strange to me. Not everyone is like BVP and wants to play through two master's degrees, and perhaps, the start of a Ph.D. program next year! ;-)

Saw a clip of her speaking with Jake H. She said lots of her family members wanted her to sit out the rest of this year, since it was only two games guaranteed. A couple of times she repeated the phrase, "the best decision for me." Apparently she believes the best decision for her is to get done with this phase of her life sooner rather than later.

Thanks for that information. Sounds like Bannister should have said, the decision was made not in consultation with but in opposition to her family guidance. But, that would have been a little too blunt. But, "after consultation with her family" doesn't necessarily imply that she followed their guidance. So in that sense what Bannister said was correct. [I'm assuming here that I heard Bannister correctly, we were having few audio issues (a strange echo) with the webcast at that point, which we later solved by restarting the AppleTV.]

At 9-9, Ohio is in 8th place, just ahead of 9-10 Kent State, who lost tonight. The Bobcats must win at Kent State on Saturday to make the tournament. There is no longer a chance of making it if they lose.

I think I'll have to hedge on that statement, based on what I'm reading on other boards about a pandemic seeding tiebreaker that the MAC may have adopted. I haven't been able to find anything official put out by the MAC, so the following information is from "BullBoy", posting on the CSNMACbbs. Essentially, he says that rather than using winning percentage as a means of ranking teams that have played an unequal number of games, the MAC has redefined what a "tie" is. Teams will now be considered tied if they are within a half-game of each other. As he puts it, teams will be considered "tied with anyone they are either tied in the loss column with and within one in the win column or anyone they are tied within the win column, and within one loss."

If that is a correct statement of the new rule, and if it applies to women's basketball as well as men's, about which BullBoy was posting, it might affect Ohio and Kent State. If Ohio wins, they would be 10-9, and Kent State would be 9-11. Since the two teams would not be tied in either the win or the loss column, the rule would not apply, and Ohio would make the tournament as at least the 8th seed (possibly higher depending on other results Saturday).

But if Ohio loses, Kent State would be 10-10, and Ohio 9-10. That looks like Kent State would be in with a better winning percentage, and Ohio out. But the pandemic rule treats the two teams as if they were tied, and tiebreakers go into effect. If the tie were only between the two teams, Ohio would get in, because the two teams split head-to-head but Ohio has the "best" win with a victory over #1 Toledo.

However, there will be more than one team with a 10-10 record after Saturday, since four teams already have 10 wins and two of them (Ball State and NIU) play each other. So if Kent State wins on Saturday, they would be tied on actual record with at least one, and possibly as many as three, teams, as well as being "tied" with Ohio due to the pandemic rule. Multi-team tiebreakers would then go into effect. I haven't tried to break that tie due to the many possibilities, but it's worth noting that Ohio is 0-2 against both NIU and WMU, and 2-0 against BGSU.

I was kind of wondering about that, but the important part is that Ohio definitely is in with a win, and perhaps there is some hope to get in even with a loss.

Final Kent State 59, Ohio 50. This was such an awful performance by an Ohio team loaded with fifth-year seniors that it would be an embarrassment if the league gifts them with a tournament berth. I would be happy if the MAC were to announce that they will not use a pandemic seeding tiebreaker, that places in the tournament will be awarded to the teams with the best winning percentage, and that Kent State earned a tourney trip with their win over Ohio.

Throughout the game, the Bobcats showed no semblance of an organized offense, got beat to most 50-50 balls, and gave up open threes when defending them mattered most late in the fourth quarter. The sole bright spot was Yaya Felder, who came off the bench to play with intensity and purpose, something no other Bobcat could claim to have done. She finished with 20 points on 6-12 shooting, including 4 triples, and had 4 steals and 8 rebounds. Everyone else looked like they were ready to start spring break. We'll have to wait for the late games to finish to find out if their wish will be granted.

Yeah this was a tough one! I am excited to watch Felder in the future. I just watched the Buffalo and Bowling Green game which Buffalo blew them out. Fair had 2 points on 1-13 shooting, and 0-3 from 3 point range. They had 4 players in double figures. It’s hard for Hooks being that she has 1 bad game and only 1 player steps up. They still have a lot of talent for next year, but I’m sure going to miss those Seniors.

It doesn't seem right, but I'll take it. Didn't want our 3 seniors to go out that way, playing that poorly as a team. Especially being picked to win it all. Cleveland will be a good experience for the returning players too.

We're the only conference team that beat Toledo which is why we got in. We get to do it again in the opening round. Go OHIO!

I would hate for the seniors to have gone out with the game today: Hooks 4-21 FT, 0-11 FTs, 8 points; Johnson 5-21 FG, 1-11 3PT, 12 points; Burris 2-9 FG, 1-6 3PT, 5 points; Bambule 1-3, 3 points.

I hope that they can get their act together for this tournament game. I will have admit that after watching this game today, I'm not overly optimistic. However, maybe that's a good sign. Come on ladies show me I don't know what I'm talking about!

Did everyone catch that 0 for 11 from the FT line? What in the actual hell? Is that an NCAA record? It has to be close. Love Cece but that seems like she might have the yips.

Erica 1 for 11. I'm sorry...I just have no tolerance for someone who continues to jack up brick after brick. Her regression in the last 3 years has been startling.

I have to wonder if the heavy veteran presence on this team has hurt Boldon's ability to lead them.

And Gabby Burris was All-MAC Honorable Mention for the second straight year.

Hooks was dethroned as POY - Akron's Jordyn Dawson takes the award.

18-17 UT after Q1. Big three from Gabby late to stem a rocket run. Guice just missed off the rim from well behind half court at buzzer. Cats are bringing the intensity.

Great half of basketball. 34-32 rockets. Both teams really ballin. We're not shooting great but clearly in it. Wiard is the difference for them, wish we had her mid-range game on either our Men's or Women's teams.

34-32 Toledo at the half. Championship game energy from both teams. Concerted effort from Ohio to attack the rim and try to get to the line. That seems to be what's keeping Ohio in it as the shooting and rebounding advantage is going to Toledo.

58-53 UT after 3Q. Guice with an inbounds pass off the back of Wiard for a layup and then Gabby with a big three with under 10 seconds to play to cut onto lead. Ball stuck a lot for the Cats in the quarter with Erica going 1:1, need to move the ball better and more touches for Cece in my opinion.

Toledo made just one play per quarter than Ohio did. 17 assists to 4. 42 rebounds to 31 with 3 minutes to go.

Toledo 80, OHIO 67, final. Better team won. Biard one rebound shy of a triple-double. Cats fought hard but didn't make enough shots and were outrebounded. Toledo's offense moved the ball really well, they will be tough to beat.

An admirable effort from an energy standpoint. That would have been good enough against most of the teams still alive. However, the totality of the MAC season dictates that we play the best team in the quarterfinals and that was that.

With a few more stable, healthy bodies, I think this season could have looked a lot different both in W/L results and versatile style of play. Unfortunately, we have not enough shot makers, not enough athletes, and not enough size. Today, we had four assists on 25 made field goals. After a while, it's exhausting that our best offense is Cece or Erica going one on one. Meanwhile Toledo had ball and off-ball movement to open three point shooters, a mid range game, and a big advantage on the glass.

Hats off to the outgoing seniors who have given a lot to the program. Cece, Gabby, Kaylee, and Hunter were honored on senior day so I expect all to be gone, though I think Kaylee is the only one who still has eligibility. I guess we're expecting Erica to return. Caitlyn Kroll returning will be huge going into next year, though it would be her seventh year in a college basketball system. We'll see. I believe we still have three roster spots to fill.

There's certainly more than one way to bake a cake, but shy of newcomers stepping in immediately and carrying all that load offensively (which is a ridiculous thing to expect), those spots will have to be passers and rebounders, as returning players ramp up their offense. I certainly hope the new point guard already committed is an impact player. It seems like the returning roster is exclusively 2s, 3s, and perimeter-oriented 4s...but then again, there are a few players we really haven't even gotten to see yet. I hope I'm wrong!

Toledo is a better team and played a solid game, yet Ohio played them even for three-quarters. A great effort. Next year will be very different, especially if Erika leaves - 60 of our 67 points today came from Gabby, Cece and Erika. We'll need scorers next year along with our ongoing height needs.
