Bad news/good news so far from Dekalb. Ohio traveled only 7, leaving Burris and Bambule, among others, in Athens, and fell behind by double digits in the first five minutes. But the Bobcats surged back to tie it at 26 at the end of 1. Alexandra Antonova, in the first non-garbage time minutes of her career, went 2-2 from three.

Bobcats lost 80-70, but the really bad news is that Cece Hooks collided with Antonova with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the game and went down bleeding heavily. She walked off the court with assistance, but did not return to the game. Ohio finished the game with four players on the floor, as Mace and Felder had previously fouled out.

Just curious as I saw her Pops on TV and remembered I had not seen anything about Pope since then. We saw her down at Liberty .....

EDIT.....NVM found it after reading through the entire thread.

Crazy they had to finish with 4. Any word on Cece yet? Hopefully just a "flesh wound" that is patched up and she is good to go.

I haven't heard anything yet on Cece. Ugh, that one hurt to watch. But we pretty much had one hand tied behind our back the whole game.

It's good to see Antonova shoot really well but at 6-foot-2 all of her attempts were 3-pointers and she had one rebound in 18 minutes. Rogan and Dennis, who don't normally play either, had five rebounds each, so that was good even though they combined for just 3 points. Felder had a nice game in extended minutes before she fouled out. Johnson and Mace struggled.

It's unfortunate how much of any injury and COVID struggles this team has had. At their best, the Bobcats are as good as anyone in the MAC, even with some players out, but the number of players missing in many games has just been overwhelming.

For the majority of the season, a third of the team was unavailable. Yesterday it was half; a very tough season.

Maybe they'll have to do what Semeka Randall did once. Numbers got so low she got one volleyball and one field hockey player to join the squad. Both of them were seniors with high school basketball experience. I think it was mostly to have enough players for practices, but they both played in games a little.

The next game vs. Ball State has been postponed. The COVID rules say that you need to have six healthy scholarship players to play. We noted earlier that it wouldn't take many COVID positives to meet the threshold. I am not even sure if we have COVID issues. We might not have six uninjured players al all. If that is true it is an odd loophole in the COVID rules that nobody expected and in a normal year we would have had to find some walk-ons or forfeit. I think back in a 5 win season in the late 90s that the men's team played a game with only 4 or 5 scholarship players healthy.

Apparently Bambule and Burris were out with COVID, and I that brought Ohio down to seven players available, which is the minimum. So one more player unavailable for any reason was all it took for a postponement.

Ohio lost at home today to Western Michigan, 80-73. Combined with Kent State and Northern Illinois wins, the loss drops the Bobcats into ninth place in the MAC and out of the tournament. It's going to be a tough climb to get back into the race for Cleveland, as Ohio is 0-2 against both WMU and NIU, two of the teams just above them in the standings.

Kind of a familiar story today - the Bobcats can't hit threes (4-22), and they can't stop them either (14-32). They were up by 2 with just over 5 minutes to play, but were outscored 15-6 to close the game.

At least Cece Hooks' injury does not appear to be as bad as it could have been. She did not play today, and sported a nasty gash above her right eye that Jake Hromada said took a lot of stitches to close. But there was no mention of any fractures or concussion, so perhaps she will be back sooner rather than later. Ohio has a quick turnaround before the next game against Eastern Michigan on Monday. That may already be a must-win game, as the Eagles are one of the teams below Ohio in the standings.

I know injuries have been a huge factor but I don't recall a more disappointing season for Mens or Womens if this team goes from the expectations they had to not making the MAC Tournament. They would certainly be a terrifying #8 seed.

Ohio grinds out a 66-53 win. Johnson was out with what was described as a strained Achilles, but Hooks was in. She didn't have a great night, but her repeated drives into the teeth of the EMU defense at least opened up the 3-point shot, and Ohio hit them at an 11-22 clip. Yaya Felder was terrific in the first half with 14 points before turning back into a freshman for most of the second. But late in the fourth quarter, she grabbed a steal and score, and went 4-4 from the free throw line to give the Bobcats some breathing room.

The win didn't get Ohio out of ninth place, as Bowling Green also won tonight to keep their nose ahead of Ohio's. And Toledo comes to town Wednesday with their 13-1 record. But it was the Bobcats who tagged them with the 1.

Bobcats pulled away late to beat Eastern Michigan 66-53. The Eagles are not good, so it was maybe what Ohio needed with Johnson out. Apparently they are hopeful she'll be back Wednesday against Toledo. They'll probably need her playing well to have a chance in that one. Felder had a career-high 20 tonight, Burris 18 and Hooks only 12 in her first game back after missing with the bad cut to her forehead. But she had 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Not a great scoring night for Hooks but she was 3 boards shy of a triple double. 12 points, 10 dimes, 7 boards.

Ohio looked from start to finish like they were dialed in and knew exactly what they wanted to do, especially defensively. High confidence, energy, and communication. Even though EMU was a win, they took a significant step up mentally against Toledo. Other than the couple minutes after the Toledo buzzer beater to take the lead, where it seemed to be nothing but Erica running around and putting up tough shots in traffic, the offense was good, especially with her, Gabby, and Hooks. Great to have all three on the floor at once. Boy, it would be nice to have had about four of those points left at the free throw line by Hooks. Refs...well, they made post defense by Ohio illegal for most of the game. Apparently they don't like Kate Dennis, who I thought did a really nice job on some much bigger girls. I don't know what else she was supposed to do! But in spite of all that, Ohio is down one; two seconds left. Ref anticipates a foul that never happens, right as Toledo throws away the inbounds pass. That's a killer. Overall, if Ohio can keep their health and their heads up, they can beat anyone in Cleveland; if they can just get there...and get some rebounds! (I get that there's not a lot of help beyond Gabby but there were way too many second chance shots all night for Toledo that were winnable rebounds.)

If the Bobcats don't make the MAC tournament, this will probably be the game that keeps them out. Up by as many as 17, and by 11 at the half, they were soundly outplayed by Toledo in the second half and lost 76-73. After shooting 8-20 from three in the first half, Ohio went 1-9 in the second. Toledo was 9-16 in the second half from three, led by Sophia Wiard, who was left virtually unguarded behind the arc on her way to hitting 6 of 7 threes. The rest of the Rockets were just 5 of 22 for the game from distance.

A win would have moved Ohio (6-7) into the 8th spot in the standings, as Northern Illinois (7-8) also lost tonight, but instead Ohio remains percentage points behind NIU in 9th.

Ohio will have another chance to escape the bottom four if they can win at Bowling Green (7-7) this Saturday.

I am sure they would have loved to have had the win, but one can hardly blame a one-possession failure to sweep an otherwise undefeated in-conference foe for that.

Toledo was just as cold, if not colder, shooting in the first half. They were in the teens from 3 and maybe 32% from the field. To see them only down 11 after being that cold, it only made sense that they would close the gap. The real missed opportunity was about four too many missed Ohio free throws, and maybe a missed easy bucket or two, in the first half that would have made the lead pretty much insurmountable.

This team just does not seem to have the same chemistry as in the past. I don't know exactly how to put my finger on it, but most of the games I've watched this year seem to lack an intensity that we had in the past. It's not that the players aren't hustling individually, but they seem disjointed and out of sync most the time.

Also, CeCe for all her greatness is a foul shooting disaster. My wife keeps saying that the other teams best strategy when she goes in for a layup in a crucial situation is to foul her. Unfortunately, there's a lot of truth in that statement. Erica doesn't seem to have the juice in her motor that she had in past seasons. Not sure what the problem is -- fatigue maybe. With all the Covid issues the team has had, maybe it's post-covid fatigue. That's not real likely given the age and the general fitness of the players, but I suppose in an individual case it could be a factor.

Just one frustrating season so far. If they can get to the MAC tournament, maybe they can turn it around. There are some really good players on this team. I really like a few of the younger players as well as the veterans, particularly YaYa and Madi.

I'm not expecting this team to make it to Cleveland, given their remaining schedule. And that's shocking, to me.

Given the fact that their bench is very short (you don't often see a D1 team finish a game with 4 players on the floor). They have been playing extra games to make up for the games postponed early in the season, I am not surprised that they have had difficulty in the 2nd half. Their legs have to be very tired, but they have never quit. I am sure this is not the season they envisioned, but they are a quality group of young women.

They are up 15 at BG with 4 minutes left. That would be a very helpful win as it would put them ahead of Bowling Green in the standings.

Bowling Green won the MAC regular season with a very, very young team in what was a big surprise. They will fall in to a tie for 8th place

Ohio finished third last year in a injury plagued year and lost to CMU in an epic MAC semi-final. We were the favorite this season but have ran into even more serious injury issues than last year. A win makes us 7th for the time being.

CMU was maybe the most dominant program in tha MAC over the past decade with several MAC and MAC tournament titles and several NCAA wins including a Sweet 16. They are in last place and won't make the MAC tournament.

Ohio and BG were picked 1st and second. The fact that one of them might miss just tells you about conference parity.

82-69 final for Ohio. Great game for Gabby Burris, who scored 26 on 10-15 shooting. Erica Johnson had 17, including 3-5 from three.

Four teams are now within a half-game of each other for 6th through 9th place. Three of them are tied with .500 records. Ball State (7-7) holds 6th since they are 3-0 against NIU (8-8) and Ohio (7-7). Ohio is in 8th with an 0-3 record against NIU and Ball State. Bowling Green (7-8) is 9th. Ohio holds an additional edge against BG since they swept the 2 games against the Falcons, and hold the head to head tiebreaker.

The MAC has not yet scheduled a make-up game between Ball State and Ohio. The two teams are both open on Monday, February 28, as well as on Monday, March 7. With the standings so tight, the league may decide to put that make-up game on the schedule.
